Campanile Dax - Saint Paul Lès Dax3.0 out of 5.0

Stayed there for one night while on a business trip. Although it was clean and comfortable, the hotel needs a bit of attention as it was a bit run-down. You can see some maintenance and upgrades are required as the buildings are old. Comparing to the Campanile in Biarritz, this one is definitely not on the same standard. Breakfast however was good with the breads and fruit and yoghurt, would've like something like bacon and eggs as an additional choice as well. Cost was affordable.
This hotel is ideally placed near the lake and is ideal for people coming from or going to Spain. It's a little dated but is in good condition and clean. The check in exp Erie nec was very good and we enjoyed our stay even if just for one night only.
We travel through France to Spain frequently and have never stayed in this hotel before. At the reception they didn't speak English so it was very difficult to understand what was said to us. When we got our room we were very disappointed first thing to hit you was the smell it smelt of smoke. The bathroom was in great need of replacement the bath was full of rust around the outlets. The decoration is very dated and looks very tiered. The room was right under the out side stairs which made the room dark the stairs were used as a smoking area. All in all the hotel is at a good location but we wouldn't stay there again.
We often stay in Campanile hotels on our travels round France so are fully aware of what to expect. The rooms are reasonably spacious and I have always liked the idea of having my own front door rather than trapesing through reception every time you want to go outside. In terms of location this is one of the better ones for Campanile with a pretty lake just over the road with a walking path around it. The restaurants are always consistent and I particularly like the buffet starter's and desserts. Our French is pretty appalling so the fact that most of the staff speak some English is also useful. Prices are very reasonable for both accommodation and food. For an overnight halt you really can't go wrong.
In a very pleasant area overlooking the Lake but so in need of a tidy and update, the whole place looks tired and drab, It does not have liquor licence and so on arrival You cannot have a drink until the restaurant opens
I accept that the main critidism of the place relates to the shabbiness of the building externally and I would agree with that, but the rooms are clean and spotless and the beds are comfortable, clean and fresh. Meals in the main building are good value for money and presentation is good. The Specials board adds daily changes with meat, fish and poultry options. The great disappointment lies in the amount of dog poo in the grassed areas outside. We had a dog with us and always clear up after her. In this place it would appear that no one does, leaving the attractive outside area in a disgusting state. There was a couple in an adjoining room, possibly staff or residents with a very large dog who appeared to be the culprit. In view of this, we would never, ever return to this place. This has left us with a very poor view of Camponile hotels. Families with children beware! Unlike the Campanile at Poitiers, dogs are charged at 5 euros per night.
Stayed here overnight on our journey from U.K. to Spain. Our room was so dingy it was really depressing. The brown wall paper in the bathroom was awful. The bed was so hard it felt like we had slept on the floor all night and the tiny pillows were filled with bricks. The coffee was ok if you like in nearly black as the two tiny milk cartons held about a teaspoonful in each, oh and no biscuits anymore. The food in the attached restaurant was quite nice. Glad we were only staying one night our backs could not had stood another night.
We have stayed often in the Campanile Dax because it suits our journey timewise. In recent months they have begun an overhaul of the bedrooms but they are still far from up to scratch. The WC was cracked and, at some point soon, will cause an injury! The tiling in the bathrooms have been replaced and it all look nice an d clean but the Bathroom mirror issue still exists. The basins are huge and the addition of that measurement plus the shelf behind makes the mirror well over 600mm from one's face. It is therefore extremely difficult to apply make-up, shave, dress one's hair etc. There is no hairdryer either. The bed was very hard, the pillows so compact they were like bricks and, as a consequence, bad backs in the morning are inevitable. The pictures need changing as they are old, faded and tatty as is the bedroom worktop which is chipped, There is a thick cloud of cobwebs between the chest of drawers and the wall so the cleaning staff need to get their act together. The tea/coffee situation needs addressing. They supply paper cups! They only supply 1 proper teabag in a double room [the other is a ghastly herb thing]. The biscuits are broken. They should not bother with it at all or do it properly. It looks so penny-pinching and unwelcoming. Having said all that we always get a good welcome a the dinner we had that evening was first class. As usual we opted for the hors d'oeuvres buffet followed by one of the dishes of the day. The buffet selection was extensive and covered meats and fish dishes as well as a great variety of salad components. We always enjoy that. We followed with main entrée of Duck Parmentier which was delicious and came with salad. The service was good, competent and friendly. Price wise we feel they are quite expensive for what they offer. We stayed at a 4* hotel with full facilities the following night and they charged 57 Euros, so the 65 Euros for the Campanile is a bit steep. We will be back.
We have stayed in Campanile hotels many times, most frequently in the Dax one. They are slowly changing their image which was sorely needed. Gone are the blue check curtains and bedcovers, gone are the tatty pictures which are identical in every room. Not gone are the awful plastic cups and mean supply of tea/coffee. Are they sfraid people would steal china cups!!! The bathroom in our room had been retiled and re-siliconed and looked very fresh. They no longer offer the usual little selection of toileteries but, instead have two wall mounted soap/shampoo dispensers which probably make more financial sense to them. However the bed, obvously new, is extremely hard in room 30 and we both woke up with a back ache which took hours to go away. No doubt the mattress will soften up after 100 people or so!!! We ate in the restaurant which has also had a refurbishment identical tho those in the other branches. I do not see the sense in having one very tall table with tall stools in the middle of the room. It is not very nice to be seated with one's head level to several people's bottoms! We really enjoyed are confit of duck and the selection of hors d'oeuvres was nice and fresh. We have had some in some of the other branches which were not nearly as good.
Middle aged hotel although a quiet location. Basic room on the upper level, clean enough. Wi-fi and tv worked ok. Large parking areas in grounds. In house restaurant. Friendly staff, struggling to say more really.
