The hotel is actually several miles outside the amazing island town of Monemvasia, up partly unpaved roads seemingly leading to nowhere. However, its worth it. You know something is special when a ‘golf cart’ is dispatched to the car park to pick up you and your luggage and you are sat down with a cumquat appetiser to fill in your check-in details while they take your luggage to your room. We had a junior suite which was a lounge with soft chairs, open plan to the bedroom area and a very nice bathroom. The ceiling was pitched. The hotel has been rebuilt from the ruins of a very old house and natural spring. Very little was left of it when they got it but a signature piece still standing was an old fireplace and chimney, which was in our room. The hotel is immensely proud of its heritage and renovation and more than one staff member commented on how special our particular room was. This heritage was pleasing as otherwise it could have seemed a little dark, with a small window and no balcony (few rooms in the old part have balconies as they have kept to the layout of the original buildings). What stands out about the buildings though is the huge attention to detail in the renovation. The fixtures, fittings and standard of decoration in our room and about the hotel were out of this world. Secondly, the staff are superb, making you welcome and feeling special but in no way making the place seem snooty. The complementary bottle of wine in the room was excellent (Greek wine isn’t always that good). As the hotel is quite a way from the town we decided to eat there. Sure its expensive but is also superb. Really superb. Again, much of what they serve is made or grown there. The hotel is a sort of ‘experience spa’ place and there are lots of activities that you can pay to go on. However, there is also loads going on ’for free’. A carriage and horse takes people for a quick spin after breakfast, which was fun. There was also an excellent hands on demonstration of bread making which we went to. The managing director popped long to that and spoke to us all. The next day at breakfast they were showing how they get the local honey from the honeycombs. The breakfast, by the way, is superb. The best of the holiday. This is a truly special place: the buildings, the staff, the scenery, the service. The only place I have ever stayed that is as good is Raymond Blanc’s Le Manor aux Quat Saisons near Oxford - and that is very much more expensive. Rare luxury. We didn’t do more than drive through the ‘mainland’ side of Monemvasia, which is mainly touristy tavernas. It took us two goes to get to the island part which is reached by a single road that winds round one side of the island. Parking is all along one side of the road but it was always packed. On the second attempt we got a spot about 1/2km from the entrance to the fortress town - a huge stone gatehouse. Its initially very touristy but well worth it as most tourists don’t seem to venture past the initial Taverna. It was too hot for us to do a proper tour - I would have loved to have seen more as once you get away from the crowds its clearly a special historic place. Pros: Superb hotel and service - truly World Class Cons: Historic buildings mean smallish windows and lack of balconies
The Kinsterna Hotel is absolutely wonderful. From the amazing breakfast spread every morning to the stunning rooms which have been amazingly restored. We were very lucky to be upgraded during our week long stay which was a lovely touch. The food in the high end restaurant is delicious and the setting is very romantic. The more casual restaurant has nice food but nothing amazing. There is the most beautiful beach Elafonissos in close distance to the hotel with a 8 min car ferry over to the island where it is. The water is crystal clear, we were blown away by how nice this beach was, probably the best we have seen in Europe. We also adopted an olive tree while we were here which was a lovely thing to do. There were free activities on most days such as soap making and wine crushing which were really fun and a lovely touch to our relaxing days spent by the gorgeous pools. Thank you for a fantastic stay we would most definitely like to return!
What an experience :) We were there (my wife and I) over the Christmas break. Had such a wonderful time. Fantastic food, wonderful staff, excellent accommodation. I'd highly recommend this hotel to all.
An extraordinary setting, historic, atmospheric with the right amount of modern touches and original details that delight the senses! The staff is simply amazing and so well trained, the food excellent and overall an experience worth having!
We spent a family holiday at Christmas at Kinsterna hotel and that has been a wonderful experience. The place is made to perfection in its details and all the personnel has been very helpful, well trained and eager to attend to all our needs. A variety of activities were offered on site. Warmly recommended place.
This is our second visit to Kinsterna before. The buildings and the location are magical and warrant the visit. A restored architectural site with each own olive grove, vineyard and stables. The staff are pleasant and eager to be helpful - for example we had an issue with the rattling door. They fixed it immediately even though it was Christmas Eve. A few things I don’t expect from a €200/night hotel. 1. Car parking is really insufficient and stressful to find a space 2. A small thing - in 2017 the WiFi needs to be adequate - even when the hotel is full 3. If the fitness centre is important to you it has unhelpful opening hours 4. Breakfast starts at 08.00 and I don’t expect finding the door closed at 08.05 5. You will be offered 20% off on all spa treatments booked before arrival. Beware all does not mean all. Some don’t qualify for the discount Very nice stay overall.
We have stayed at the Deluxe room with private pool, amazing experience!!!! When you wake up at the morning you only can hear the birds and flowing air from the mountains. The hotel is located in an isolated area and the owner has truly respect and build the land in harmony with the nature. The hotel is a truly gem for the area, each detail really travels you in something unique. I would definitely recommend that place and want to go back soooooon.
Staying at Kinsterna Hotel really made me and my wife more relaxed persons! It elevated me and also relieved me from everyday life in Athens. The landscape was unforgettable and we were excited with the level of all the services and – especially – the breakfast…
Really great experience staying here. The service staff are pleasant and helpful if you have questions, but not at all in your face or fake. The cleaning staff do a great job at keeping this hotel fabulous and were always lovely each day. Our room was spotless, had an amazing roof and firplace. The design has been smartly thought out, with a mix of modern and historical features. The pool areas are lovely and well maintained. I want to say that the quality and standard of food is amazing, I can say that I ordered a veggie salad from room service with just a simple lemon dressing and it was one of the best things I ate our whole trip as the produce was unreal. The only negative I have, and this is just for me, is that as a vegan you will struggle for options other than salads/fruit. Establishments often forget that we need balanced, nutritional meals as opposed to just dishes where the meat is removed. I think a well designed vegan menu would sell very well here as they have amazing produce and an abundance of nuts and seeds etc.
This hotel is simply one of the most amazing places we have ever stayed. It is beautiful beyond words - the setting, the views, the gardens, the pools. We felt so happy just being there that we wanted to stay longer and were immediately planning when we could return! We particularly loved the swimming pools - there is one for adults only which is really appreciated as nothing ruins the peaceful atmosphere like screaming children. The breakfast was amazing and delicious. The staff were all very friendly - special credit to the guy that worked at the pool (he had just started in September). When we checked in we were slightly disappointed that the room was quite small - we were on the cheapest rate - but actually it was very comfortable to stay in with a beautiful bathroom, so it ended up being just fine. I can't recommend this place highly enough, just go!
