We have just returned from a week at Hotel Splendide we give it 5 stars for a 3 star hotel! We had an excellent room overlooking the lake, we loved the well preserved style of the hotel; the four course evening meals with traditional service and delicious Italian food were excellent, with a good choice of menu (ordered the previous evening). There was limited choice at breakfast but this suited us. All the staff were friendly and very helpful, we felt spoiled for the week. This was an excellent location from which to explore the central region of Lake Como.
We had three nights in the beautiful Bellagio and the Hotel Excelsior Splendide. Our room was situated at the front overlooking the Lake, which made our stay very pleasant. One night, a restaurant over the road was blasting out music until quite late. Thank goodness for noise cancelling headphones!! Otherwise very peaceful. The pool area is relaxing and great to cool off after walking around the delightful cobbled streets. Our travel agent booked our room with half board which we wouldn't normally do, but it worked really well for two weary travelers. The breakfast and dinners were delicious and the waiting staff could not be more delightful. The hotel advertises internet throughout the premises which is not correct. In fact the only spot is in the front reception.
We were a party of 6 who stayed 11nights half board from the 26th June and had a fantastic holiday. The hotel is in a wonderful position overlooking the lake, the rooms were a good size with quiet aircon. The breakfast choice was good with very tasty scrambled eggs and bacon, the traditional Italian style evening meals were also very good and if you get a chance have lunch by the lakeside because it is excellent. The hotel is a bit tired but we found it to be part of its charm and for the price it is great value for money. But we have to say a special thank you to Lucca, Sala, Marco, Walter and Frederico who looked after us all so well, they made our holiday !
We spent a week here. The staff are wonderful and all speak good English. The room was large by Italian standards and our view over the lake was superb. The restaurant food was excellent and the staff are very efficient and friendly. I would have given the hotel five stars but the evening we arrived the bar shut at 9pm and the hotel could not even offer uus a cup of coffee. We could have gone out but we were tired after a long day and just wanted to relax.
Hotel Excelsior Splendide has lake view rooms with a view to die for. The hotel is aging however so the beautiful parquetry floor does squeak, the air conditioning is available on request from reception and the balcony overlooks the lakeside terrace where all the action takes place. This can be noisy on summer nights when live music entertains the crowds up until midnight.
This is a 3 star hotel and it's in an old converted palazzo so it may not suit everyone but we had a great stay. The location is fantastic and if you book a room with a lake view then it's money well spent. The building has lots of character, our room was spacious and well equipped and kept meticulously clean. Although the bathroom was a good size, the shower cubicle was obviously meant for smaller people than me! The garden/pool area is small but more than adequate for a hotel of this size. It was a very welcome given temperatures in the mid 30s. All the staff (with the exception of the mature lady who was on reception occasionally) were very friendly, helpful and happy to give advice. The food was always at least good and in some cases excellent. There was the usual limited choice for breakfast although this did include hot items. As for dinner, the pastas (primi piatti) were all particularly good but if you don't like your main course meat rare then have a word with the waiters. The only issue with the restaurant was the limited hours for dinner - 7.00 until 8.15. Not only is this restrictive & inconvenient if you've been on an excursion or lengthy day out, but if you arrive at your table after 7.30 it's clear that the staff would like you out as soon as possible! This was the only real negative and while I'd happily stay there again, if the policy didn't change then I'd stay B&B.
This hotel in good location, very near to ferry and bus stop. We had a triple room. Though we requested a lake view but was given a rear room.....not a problem because it was quieter and more cooling . We stayed for 10 nights and travel round by ferries and buses. The wifi is very very slow. The lift is very small but we only used it for going up our room after a tiring long day. We loved walking down the grand marble stairs Our room was basic but comfortable though I did complain about the bed ( the mattress was sinking in the middle) after our first night. They happily changed for me on our 2nd nights. The staffs are always happy and willing to help. My husband is a type 2 insulin dependent diabetic. There Is no fridge in the room, we bought some gel pack and asked the receptionist to keep them in the freezer . We changed it in the evening and another set in the morning. We kept the insulin chill, fully insulated with the frozen gel pack in our room cupboard . Breakfast (7-9am) Good varieties and adequate. Perhaps opening for longer hours (till 10 or 10.30am) after a long tired day, we could rest for abit longer . Evening meals are not too bad..what else could we ask for - A three-course meal compare to the price if we are eating out every evenings. We do eat out a few nights for a change . The waiters here are very hardworking...non-stop all the time, tidying and making sure everything are OK. Always seem to have a smile . They purposely served me hot lemon water seeing me unwell and coughing all the time. On our last day , I gave them fair amount of tips to all five of the waiters bcos I think they all deserves to be patted on their back . I can see during our 10 days stayed there. Really enjoyed our stay in Bellagio!
Hotel Splendide is well located along the waterfront of Bellagio, close to ferries and restaurants. Our room was adequate but not air conditioned, necessitating open windows for ventilation. Unfortunately, the nightly music performers from the outdoor restaurants nearby played till 11:30 pm and beyond, making a lake-view room a poor choice for anyone wanting to get to sleep before midnight. Staff was good and sought to be helpful. Breakfasts were fairly standard, but dining service was somewhat chaotic. Bellagio has become simply too crowded to remain on our list of places to visit.
Looking at some of the previous reviews, I'm really wondering if we stayed in the same hotel! Yes, the hotel is a more traditional style, but some of the traditional features are beautiful. OK, there are some bits that could be improved upon - a bit of paint here and there or slightly worn carpet, but it certainly didn't spoil our holiday. Our room was a generous size with lovely quiet air-con (useful when the temperature was high 30s), and a stunning lake view. The car ferry is very close by but didn't disturb us. There was a free safe inside the wardrobe. The bathroom was very clean with a shower cubicle and plenty of white towels that were changed regularly. The toiletries were individual sachets - but we always take our own - so no problem. We were on half board basis. The breakfast was more than adequate with plenty of choice and enough to set us up for the day. I had been a bit concerned about dinner after reading some of the reviews on here. I really didn't need to have worried. There was a salad buffet followed by a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 2 puds. You had to make your choice the evening before which seemed a bit odd but really wasn't a problem. We found the food to be very good and had all 4 courses - we certainly didn't leave hungry. It was a traditional Italian style meal with the starter being a pasta or soup, with meat or fish and a small amount of veg to follow. Dessert was either fruit or something like tiramisu, parfait or panna cotta. The staff in the dining room were lovely (with the exception of someone we found out to be 'the boss'!). Overall, we had a great stay in a lovely old hotel, with very nice food and very friendly staff. If I could improve the hotel in one way it would be to add a small fridge to each room - to keep the white wine chilled!!
For the price of one night's stay in this hotel, you could buy a whole new bed. This mattress must be 20 years old. Up all night with springs sticking in my back. Disgusting to think how people can charge for this. Someone needs to tell the owners to spend one night sleeping on this bag of scrap metal see how quick he would replace it then. Incredible how they get away with it, what does a new mattress or even a topper, cost? . 3:45am and still fighting to find a comfy part of this bed. When you do finally go to sleep the aircon cuts out and you end up nearly dying of heat exhaustion. Have to get up and reset it because it doesn't stay on for more than a few hours. Out of here first thing in the morning, not another night....
