I am a platinum member of IHG. we had a nice room on the executive floor. The rooms are specious and clean. breakfast has verity of eastern and western very rich with vegetables and fruits, different kind of eggs, and many kind of bread. The hotel is located in the city Center walking distance from the shopping area, go watch the Dynamic Yunnan show near by.
I visited Kunming this summer for sightseeing and to see the Yi ethnic minority Torch Festival outside of the city. First- I had booked for 3 nights and was upgraded to a suite- the room could have handled a small family and was much appreciated. When I needed to leave a day early to attend the festival the reception was very accommodating about re-scheduling my pre-paid 3rd night. Breakfast buffet is Excellent with a great selection of fruits as well as good selection of both Western and Chinese dishes. Again, the staff was attentive and helpful. This will definitely be my first choice if I return to Kunming.
We had booked an Executive Level Room but were upgraded to a Suite which was a nice way to start the holiday. The staff in the receptions area, the concierge and the executive lounge were all very friendly and attentive. The hotel is well located in the centre of the shopping area and is an easy walk to many attractions. Breakfast, both downstairs and in the Executive Lounge, was very good and the staff seemed well trained. The only down side of the stay is that there is a major construction zone across the river and the noise from it can be a little annoying at times. Would stay there again if in Kunming.
My usual grading for a hotel begins and ends with the staff. The staff attitude and appearance will tell you everything you need to know about everything else including cleanliness, serviceability, and potential problems. All of the staff were cheerful, well-trained, enthusiastic and able to assist. Most spoke very good English as well. The rooms are well furnished and the free internet connection is much better than is typically the case for China. The fitness center is exactly what it needs to be. I recommend the hotel for both short and long stays for the business traveler. Again, congratulations to the staff and management for a quality operation.
We stayed in a neighboring hotel but read about the Crowne's restaurant. By that time we were in China about 3-4 weeks and had a craving for Western style food; in particular, steak. We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff in the lobby who pointed us to the restaurant up a stairwell. The place was immaculate and well decorated. They were preparing for a popular buffet which looked out of this world delicious. There were a bountiful if choices from classic western style food that any picky child wouldn't hesitate filling their plates, to an abundance of regional Chinese food. That said, we were there for Australian steak. The staff provided us with a multilingual iPad to help choose but shortly thereafter a bilingual waiter/manager named Benson took over and catered to us as if we were in a 5 star French restaurant. We enjoyed every moment there. The steaks were perfectly cooked and melted in our mouths. Benson advised us that a colleague on an opposite shift was also fluent in English. Like other reviews, there's little traffic in that restaurant but don't let it put you off - the food was fresh and cooked to order. Finally, the hotel staff was so courteous to us as we entered and exited, that our next stay in Kunming would be at the Crowne Plaza.
We stayed at Crowne Plaza Kunming for 2 nights and we had a pleasant stay. Service are warm and professional, the rooms are spacious and the bathroom was very nice, especially the bath tub. The bed is huge and very comfy. Breakfast is super, good choice and quality specially good selection of international food. The first night we also had dinner at Wildfire and have to say that the steak there was excellent. Thank you all for a wonderful stay!!
I booked an Executive room with lounge access in the Crowne Plaza for five days. With the price point being equivalent to other international hotels in Chinese cities, I was eagerly anticipating a quality stay with a tolerable degree of service, particularly since we had Club access. How wrong I was. I became concerned a few days prior to my arrival when I noticed several negative reviews on Tripadvisor, but since each negative review was responded to, apparently sincerely, by the hotel, and promises were made to immediately address any issues, I assumed this to be a blip, and arrived at the Crowne Plaza confident that we would be insulated against any issues anyway, through our paying extra for executive privileges. I will say this categorically: Do not pay for executive benefits. The lounge had the saddest array of of snacks and Happy Hour provisions that I have ever seen. Some of the food was unidentifiable, even after we tasted it, to the point where we were not even sure if it was animal or vegetable. We feared it might be chicken, but hoped we were wrong. When I raised this issue with the lounge staff, they said it would improve, but no changes were made. The lounge staff don't speak English, and giggle like children when help is asked for. When we checked out of the hotel via the Club lounge, it was handled so poorly that we were late leaving the hotel, waiting around while staff ambled off to look for enough spare change to return our deposit. Should you steel yourself enough to perhaps grab a quick coffee in the lounge, more than five minutes is more than enough to be driven back out by the relentless pan-pipe music, and any more than a cursory glance around the lounge will allow you to notice how grimy the room is, and how smeared the surfaces, including tables, are. Our room itself was permeated by a degree of grime that meant that housekeeping were never going to be equal to the task. Each room, and in fact the whole hotel, needs a thorough deep clean. Whenever I touched the curtains I wanted to wash my hands. The towels were old and sad. The bathrobes reeked of bleach. The balcony which the room was advertised as having was a grubby sliver of outside space, not large enough to really accommodate two people standing, let alone sitting, should there have been anything to sit on. A sign on the balcony door warned guests not to fully close it should they venture outside, as they would be trapped and unable to return to their room, due to the appalling design of the balcony doors. Despite our staying in an Executive Club room, no welcome fruit or any hint of regular Club service ever materialized in our room. When I booked the Crowne Plaza I'd been attracted by the balcony and the the outside pool, with these amenities swinging it for me against the Sofitel. Unfortunately the pool was closed for the duration of our stay, with no suggestion of when it would reopen. One evening we popped up to the hotel buffet to see if the offerings were any better there. Again, the food was not just local rather than international, but of a poor and unpleasant appearance. I really like Chinese food, but I wouldn't eat anything, Chinese or otherwise at this hotel. I left the Crowne Plaza feeling cheated. I regularly pay for executive rooms in hotels across China at equivalent price points, and I have never been so appalled by my surroundings or what was on offer. This hotel has no interest in service, or even tipping a wink to the idea of being an international hotel. You could stay at a locally run hotel in an equally central location in Kunming, at a lower price than you'll pay here, and I'm sure you'd leave feeling less ripped-off. The Crowne Plaza was the last stop on my holiday in Yunnan, and it saddened me to have been so foolish as to end a wonderful holiday here.
We chose Crown Plaza hotel in Kunming because of his brand reputation but unfortunately what we find was long far away from the experience that we use to have in the same brand around the world. We book a suit though a third party website called Ctrip, the platform that we use during our trips in China. Although the price was online with the market price around the same area, of course for the same room category, booking though Ctrip didn't allow us ,for non reasons,to don't have access to the club lounge, which usually it's included for the suits in any hotel. However thank you to Ms. Vicky Lu which check in us in a professional way and on the right time allocating us in the desire high floor. The "suit" number 1626, was very large and with natural light due the big windows. Unfortunately the view was not that nice due was on a undergoing construction side which work 24/7 with relative noises. The room look clean but old with cables around ( phone and table light) and without any decoration or amenities. Even the must simple welcome fruit we missed. The television however lack of international channels ( maybe I don't go through all the channels one by one) and it's not clear at all, maybe television must be changed due the poor quality which it's not expected is such level of hotels. However the sleep was nice and we could chose also our pillow. In the morning we had breakfast in the main restaurant buffet and again the reality didn't meet the expectations. On arrival the hostess was not on place and the chef had to call her which finally welcome us. The restaurant at 9,30 was looking like a war zone with table full of dishes but without guest and no any attendant to clean it. After find our table, we order cappuccino but unfortunately we got American coffee. The food was behind the average. The western selection was pretty bad with dry cheese and only few choices of breads or pastry ( normal international croissants are missing and replaced with something far to it). I was thinking that the Chinese section, due the location and the guest target and profile, was better but again I was wrong. The soup for the noodle it's basically only water without any taste and the other dishes and made and presented in a really poor way. The buffet look dirty and not well presented or managed. In the floor 7 people with a guy ( I hope was not the manager) totally blind behind his micros sister screen. The rest of the team running without directions or plan. Thank you to the reception for our fast check out and the informations about the city and the best spots of the city to visit. I hope the management will really take in consideration this points to improve significantly the service in hotel. The globalization bring more competition in hospitality business and the innovations are always around the corner. The market running more fast than was we think thus we need be open minded and flexible to survive in this market. All the best Valerio
I stayed at this hotel with my mother two years ago and it was an amazing experience.. but now quality of the hotel has changed a lot.. specially at the health club... female changing aria was dirty and not maintained at all.both the sauna and steam bath was not working and they were totally not bothered about it... entrance aria of the pool was dirty and not maintained for a long time ...
Stayed 1 night .Be aware That it is a building site next door. In the room there is a mention of double glazing had been improved but there maybe a little NOISE. Drills were still banging away at 22.45 when questioned were told no they would stop around 23.00.At around 02.00 asked for another room .Immediately told no other rooms available and the government allowed and wanted the work done all night. No apology in the morning .Do not stay at this hotel
