Stayed with my husband in Small Village. Very clean apartment but basic. Minimum utensils and crockery and cutlery. cooker was work top version with one small and one large ring. Standard fridge. Old fashioned portable Tv which didnt seem to work properly. Good size bathroom with hand held shower head over bath. Staff lovely and couldnt have been more friendly and helpful. As end of season no other guests when we were there so pool area bar restaurant very quiet. Ate at restaurant one night and food was faultless. Walk to Mastichari is 1 hour and ten mins. Taxi €13. Staff always more than happy to give us a lift to Mastichari daily as mini bus wasn't available. Kos itself and Mastichari lovely..hope to return someday but would choose accommodation in town.
I decided to spend 10 days away this time, instead of the usual 7, and I chose the Small Village for its fantastic reviews. Set away from the bustle, with a stunning sunset view and a private beach just a short walk away, it was just what I was after. A solo traveller, I was delighted to have such a large apartment with big, airy and light rooms (and a lovely chambermaid). Plus, the fridge stays on even when you're not in - sounds like a small thing, but some hotels don't work like that and it's infuriating! The local town is 3-4km away and I walked in and out a couple of times; if you choose to do the same, wear SOCKS with your trainers, and don't go in flip flops if you walk fast, I got blisters (totally my own fault!). But it's a glorious walk, and a great chance to take in all the sights and smells from the plants and the sea. Mastichari, the local town, has everything, including a great supermarket where I stocked up, and some really wonderful beachfront restaurants (hassle-free). In one, I spent a long and very pleasant evening with my feet buried in the sand, eating fresh mixed fish and the most incredible fried courgettes with garlic sauce. The food in the Greek restaurants on the beach is excellent (oh, the calamari!), and all staff were friendly and helpful. The roads outside have lots of stalls for fresh fruit and veg too (incredibly good value). Unless you want to stay exactly where you are (and I wouldn't blame you), I'd recommend hiring a vehicle of some sort. All garage staff are friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of stops for fuel - even though the island is small, I hired a moped and wanted to see everything the island has to offer, so stopped often! The only note of caution here is to go slow and be aware of your surroundings. The mountain roads are mainly really well kept, but the villages have narrow, steep streets (part of the charm) so go steady and enjoy it. The shuttle to Mastichari wasn't operating when I was there due to mechanical problems which is my only, very small gripe; but it didn't matter at all because of the moped, and actually was quite a good excuse to stay close by for the first and last days of my time in Kos. So, back to Small Village. Such friendly staff, the family ownership really shines through and everyone was courteous, open, smiley and helpful - everything you'd expect from a good host. There was no awkwardness about wandering alone to the poolside bar for an evening drink; Voula (do-everything person, but I mainly saw her at the bar....!) is brilliant and so knowledgeable about all sorts of things. She really made my holiday - and summed up the spirit of Small Village. Plus, the clientele were similar in what they were looking for from a holiday, so I didn't experience any lounger-hogging by the pool, or obnoxious barflies! In summary I'd say that Small Village is like a little oasis - bigger than it seems when you're there, with privacy, a beautiful pool surrounded by tenderly kept gardens full of birdsong when the finches come in to roost, and I felt really cared for. My only regret is that I didn't eat in the restaurant - apparently all the fruit is harvested from the garden, and with such high standards elsewhere I imagine the food is fabulous. However, I'd got over-excited at the veg stalls and supermarket, and the fridge was filled to the brim from Day 1! I'd highly recommend Small Village to everyone, and will be back.
This was our first visit to Kos but certainly won't be our last and we will definitely stay at The Small Village again. If you are looking for a place to relax and unwind, this is it. The staff are all lovely and nothing is too much trouble for them. We ended up feeling almost like one of the family! No problem getting a sunbed round the pool area - most days had the place to ourselves for most of the day. Our 1 bed apartment was a good size and cleaned to the highest standard. We ate at the hotel most nights and found it to be excellent value. They do have a limited menu - probably due to the small size of the hotel - but all was cooked fresh and was delicious. We hired a car for a couple of days to explore further afield and got the shuttle down to Mastichari on another day. A couple of minor things that would have made our stay even better than it was: 1. To have been able to have ordered some basic groceries (e.g. water, coffee, milk etc )before arriving. Our flight was quite a late one so we did not get to the resort until about 11pm and although we could get a coffee at the bar, it would have been nice to be able to have one in our room. 2. For the hot food at breakfast to be kept hot. Although breakfast runs until 10.30am when we came down at about 9.30am the hot food had been allowed to go cold. The staff were very good and made us fresh eggs on request, but would have been nice to have been able to sample the other hot food whilst it was hot. These are minor points though and Did not really cause a big problem for us. All in all a really great place to get away from it all and relax.
Have had a great week staying at the small village. The staff are very friendly and helpful, nothing appears to be of any hassle, a family atmosphere throughout. The facilities are excellent, the pool area was never busy and the pool temperature was just right. We ate at the hotel most evenings and the food was well beyond expectations, very very good, and reasonably priced. The breakfast was good however by the time we arrived there was frequently no coffee but again, not a problem for the staff, they often made us a wee pot. The room was nice, consisting of a bedroom, sitting room / kitchen and a bathroom. They are in the process of upgrading equipment and our bed was changed out for a new bigger bed half way through our week. It is a bit of a distance, approx 5k from the town, however the hotel provided us with a run down one day and the taxi back was only €13. I would happily stay here again and would highly recommend to others.
We've just come back from two weeks at this beautiful, easy-going hotel. Our simple maisonette fitted five comfortably and was cleaned meticulously every day. The pool area was the highlight for us: never crowded, a perfect temperature and with a wonderful sea view. The staff in the hotel couldn't have been more helpful - driving us to the doctor when our youngest was sick and even getting hold of a cake for her birthday, presenting it with great ceremony. Thank you, Bobbie, your kindness and care really made our holiday! Mastichari is a great place to unwind with a long sandy beach fringed by a string of nice tavernas. The food at the hotel was fresh and delicious too. The Small Village is a great base for exploring Kos and exactly the tranquil, down-to-earth kind of place we were hoping to find.
Breakfast was lovely!the hotel really is a home away from home nicely private but hospitable .The staff was really great and very helpfull.Very spacious and clean room.We definately visit again anytime soon.
I stayed in one of the maizonettes for about six days I had a very pleasant stay,I found the our room was spacious, clean and with all amenities. The hotel personnel were very friendly, extremely helpful especially with suggestions for day trips. I would definitely recommend the Small Village to family and friends for their next holiday. It's an ideal destination for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful environment.
Excellent place you really feel to be part of a local village as soon as you step in, very beautiful location and facilities and very comfortable the small village family look after you with quality service delivered with a smile. Recommend a visit to the near Hippocrates Garden Cultural Centre for a peaceful immersion in the history of Greece of Hippocrates's island. Definitely a place to recommend to friends and to go back.
We stayed at a villa for a week with 3 kids. Rooms were very nice with a view to the sea, and the pool area, very clean, two bed room and balconies. The staff is very friendly, the hotel is not far from airport and easy to get to by taxi. Service was really good and we enjoyed our stay very much! If you are looking for luxury and discos and beach next door, then this is not the location, but there is a free shuttle to the near by small village of Mastichari with very nice beaches and restaurants and bus connections to e.g. town of Kos and ferries to nearby Kalymnos. Rental car is a good option which you can get from the hotel also. Great stay would certainly do it again! Most of all the staff is friendliest I have come across, and rooms are very well kept and the pool is nice!
I recently stayed at The Small Village for a week with wife 2 teenage children, plus 2 of their teenage friends. On arrival late at night we were quickly checked in and the receptionist walked us up to our villa and talked us through the needs to know, so that we could settle in as soon as possible. The hotel is only a 10 minute drive from the airport, so easy to get to. It is also well signposted off various roads and we were able to find it easily. We had a complete villa - a 1 bedroom self contained unit on the ground floor with kitchen and living area, bathroom and bedroom; and the 2nd and 3rd floor which comprise a kitchen and living area, 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms. Each floor has its own sitting outside area. The condition of the villa was very good and what you see in the photos for the hotel is what you get. The air conditioning in the bedrooms was very effective. The kitchen Is quite basic - kettle, coffee machine, fridge and electric hotplate - but it is sufficient. The outside areas were well maintained and the pool was very clean, with plenty of high quality sunbeds. The pool is not massive - approximately 15m x 12m, with a separate toddler area - but it was everything we needed and as noted was very clean and well maintained. The pool has a bar area and you would be served drinks to your sunbed. We had a few breakfasts which were typically Greek - ham, cheese, eggs, omelette, cereal, salad, juice, tea, coffee, etc - but was always fresh and nice and allowed unlimited amounts. We only ate dinner their one night due to children wanting to eat out, but the quality of the meal was as good as anywhere we ate and the price very reasonable. As has been noted in other reviews, the hotel is situated 4 or 5 miles outside of the nearest town of Mastichari and so it is by nature a hotel for people generally looking for a relaxed, by the pool type of holiday - or you need a car/moped to get yourself out and about. We had a car so this was no problem for us. You can walk or bike ride from the hotel, the beach is only 10 minutes walk away, although it is quite small and not developed at all. If you crave discos, bars and tavernas you can walk to then this is not the hotel for you. There is a power plant (I believe) about 1 km away which produces a very low background humming noise. We noticed this for about 1 minute on arrival and then it just faded into the background and in no way impinged on our enjoyment of the hotel. The staff at the hotel were very very good - polite and helpful - not just with us but with our teenagers as well. They were a major factor in making this great holiday experience. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this hotel to people, so long as they appreciate it is a hotel to relax in, rather than party. I would certainly not hesitate to go back.
