After looking around , we came across this little gem , we had a fantastic stay, room was clean and warm with a very comfortable bed, breakfast included, and good main meals , what more could you ask for.
I checked in at 7:15 pm and was assigned a room on the 3rd floor furthest from reception. There was no lift/elevator and being over 70 did not appreciate the walk upstairs with heavy luggage. First impressions are always important. The room was cold, cramped, drab and smelled damp. The heat issue was quickly resolved by shutting the outside window that had been left wide open. It's mid December and freezing! On the desk was a hotel guide which I consulted to find the wifi password. The password in the book was not correct and I was unable to get WIFI. The room was very cold in the morning. The radiator had no heat which I assume meant the heating was shut off overnight. (Remember the bit about freezing temperatures). Breakfast was available at extra cost from 8 till 10 - hours convenient for the staff but not for guests. I could go on - there was no bedside table, the reading lamp didn't work, etc., but I dislike complaining. I did pass on my concerns to the person at reception when I left just before 8:00 am. He did tell me the Wifi password then explained he was the night porter so I assume my complaints fell on deaf ears. I forgot to mention a fire door at the bottom of the stairway to the rooms that was blocked open. Surely guest safety must be paramount - not at this hotel.
I am absolutely astounded at the poor customer service and laziness of the manager. I am wanting to buy four vouchers for the restaurant as gifts for Christmas and the managers excuse is that they don’t own an envelope. Are they joking?!
We visit Canterbury very regularly and have struggled to find the ideal hotel that is close to the city, comfortable and, above all, quiet. In the Victoria Hotel we have found it. Good-sized, v well equipped, with large bed and large bath. V friendly staff. Rooms spotless. Good parking which is right on edge of main road back to London. Yet it is within walking distance of the old centre of town. Very quiet at night so greatvsleep quality. We will be back. A great find.
The room we had on the ground floor did need a refurb- the furniture was tired and the decor drab, but the room was spacious, the beds comfy and the bathroom clean. The room was also very warm, and the heating easy to adjust on the radiators. It was also remarkably quiet despite its position on a busy roundabout. The location wasn't ideal but the walk into the city was easy and pleasant partly through the Westgate gardens. Taxis are cheap and the staff happy to ring on a direct line so we didn't have long to wait. Service was excellent at reception, welcoming and friendly. We didn't have breakfast, but did have one meal in the pub in the evening, which was fine- just pub grub though the service was a bit disorganised. Overall we enjoyed our stay- would recommend if you want good value for a short stay away from the city centre.
My one nights stay was booked sept 2017. Nov 26th was the night my partner and I were staying to visit our daughter at uni. On Nov 11th I receive an email to say my hotel booking was cancelled! I called the hotel to be told yes I am sorry but we overbooked I have sent u another email with other options. 2 weeks before! Wow I never even got a phone call or any compensation just sorry. I certainly won't be booking with this hotel. So just be aware because I would hate anybody to go through the stress I did of having to book short notice at another hotel.
Went here and had the Carvery , the drinks were very expensive and the food was average, the gravy wasn’t very nice and there was no Yorkshire puds when we went up , all though more did come out around 10 min later I can not comment on the rooms and Iv only eaten here 2 times and both times haven’t gone much on it , I had high expectations on the place as it gets recommended a lot , but being in the Canterbury area there are a lot of places to eat for similar prices and a lot better quality of food
This hotel served our purpose - parking & close (walking distance) to City. We had dinner the first night & breakfast both mornings! Staff seemed somewhat lax in attending to us on all occasions. Food was okay but nothing special. Would be a good idea to have menu's in the rooms. Room was good with TV, tea/coffee making (though I would like a mini fridge in ALL hotel rooms with real milk in it - I hate UHT milk!!). Windows are single glazed which wasn't an issue as our faced the garden but I think in the summer it might get noisy with people sitting out there! Bathroom was adequate - deep bath, shower too low (5' 8" and had to bend knees to wash hair!!), loo roll holder was almost falling off & the sealant round the bath & taps was mouldy in places. The kingsize bed was actually 2 single beds pushed together which meant there was a ridge in the middle!
Good location not far from town centre and off the main road, nice garden, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, good food. Carvery dinner 5 nights a week. Reductions for over 60s. Bar can be used by non-residents. Rooms have TV/radio, telephone, en-suite bathroom with bath/shower, hairdryer and toiletries. Tea, coffer, hot chocolate and biscuits in room.
This was a very nice property. It is a longer walk into the city center (about 12-15 minutes) but we went a back way and it was a lovely walk or about 10 minutes to the rail station. Our room was very comfortable and quiet. The tables in the back garden are nicely located. We enjoyed the small bar. The restaurant (which we did not use) was busy throughout our stay. A very nice value hotel with nice staff.
