This was my 1st visit and I really enjoyed it. I dined here in the evening and for the breakfast, both of which were very nice indeed, lovely soup and burger for my evening meal and a cooked breakfast in the morning. If I’m nearby again I would stay here again.

I had a very comfortable stay. The hotel is in a beautiful area and has a fascinating history. A member of staff kindly called me to advise if I wanted to pre-order dinner because I would have arrived after the kitchen closed. The meal was exquisite and a real treat. All team members encountered were very pleasant and customer-focused. Apart from minor wear and tear here and there the en-suite room was great. The full breakfast was hearty and substantial and cooked perfectly.

Hearty food & a lovely friendly team.

We stayed at the Border Hotel for a couple of nights while walking St Cuthbert’s Way. The bath was a very welcome addition to the bathroom & we certainly made use of it during our stay. The bed was a little too soft & a bit lopsided but after our hikes we slept like logs anyway. This is a no frills hotel but it had everything we needed. Hearty food & a lovely friendly team.

Lovely cosy room and huge bathroom. Unfortunately both windows looked out onto a wall but that can’t be helped. Radiator worked well! The TV picture wasn’t particularly good but I tend to listen more than watch so it wasn’t the end of the world. The tv remote also needed more batteries. I told the staff of these things when I checked out. Breakfast was good although the times of 8am-9am were a little restrictive and I did feel rushed to depart by 10am. However, food was good, atmosphere was great and I’d stay there again

I would normally say nothing rather than write a bad review but this place was so bad - the room in particular, the fact that no one cared and it showed , the lack of maintenance or bothering about customers , i think other guests should be aware. We could have put up with having to search for someone to check us in, the dirty carpets, battered dirty paint work, incredibly slow service , being made to feel an inconvenience for having dinner ( food was nice when we eventually got it) and not having what I ordered for breakfast, but the room was beyond awful. It didn't have an outside window , but did have a dirty stained carpet, the worst mildew I have ever seen in a bathroom , a mattress that was so soft it must have been ancient . It was so warm with no means of fresh air we were unable to sleep . The mist expensive hotel on our St Cuthbert's way trip and easily the worst

The property has a lot of history and fabulous outdoor area.. the new owners informed us they were putting in a fire pit under the gazebo that will allow customers to experience the outdoor area into the evenings. Fabulous view of the hills from our bedroom.

This place is somehow underwhelming, especially in light of how much it costs. The woman cooking dinners was clearly under pressure with orders taken after normal finish time for meals. The rice ran out ...who runs out of rice? Some staff were extremely friendly and organised other quite the opposite. Breakfast was quite shambolic with insufficient tables set for everyone and items continually running out. The options were very poor for such an expensive hotel. Sadly they don't need to worry about any of this as they gave guaranteed trade from Pennine Way and St. Cuthbert's Way hikers.

Hill walkers paradise. Child unfriendly.

Hotel is very charming from the outside and around the bar area. Set in a quiet village and is clearly a hill walkers paradise. Clearly not a hotel that is suitable for families with infants. Positives - Peaceful, Friendly staff, bed was comfortable. Negatives - Pennine Room (most expensive room in hotel) was filthy. Shower head is disgusting and needs replaced, and when something so obvious is overlooked, it leaves you fearing the worst. Window sills were filthy. Cobwebs everywhere. Light bulbs out. Carpet clearly had a quick hoover over prior to our arrival, but generally still filthy. Really poor when you have an infant who spends most of their time on the floor. No cleaning and emptying of bins in the morning, so room bin was overflowing. Food - first nights dinner, the wife and I both had ordered the chicken pie. One was hot and one was cold. No staff member asked how our meal was. I wasn’t hungry so gave wife the hot pie and I ate the chips. Ordered an omelette for our 1 year old and when it finally arrived, it was severely undercooked. Dangerous for a child of this age. Breakfast service is very slow, fine when it’s adults who can have tea and a chat, but as I said before. Not a hotel setup well for a family with a young child. Floor in breakfast area had bits of food from days prior. On check out - no one asked how our stay was. Can only assume they expect negative feedback so don’t bother asking. Really, really poor. Shame

Perfect Stay for The Pennine Way

Lovely hotel and my target now for 3 years in 17 days of walking the Pennine way. It’s a small cosy bar with more restaurant at side and rear. After 16 miles of my last days walking a reals Hot bath was particularly inviting. Would I stay there again? Hell yes! See you in 3 years when I do “a lap of Honour”
