This is the best place to stay in Thamel. Its friendly, the rooms are great the food is lovely. The garden a sanctuary. I adore my family there the staff become friends. Namaste KGH. Thank you for always looking after me.
We stayed for two nights and it was relaxing. The food is great! The breakfast buffet was also very good. People serving at the hotel are friendly and very hospitable. The layout and interior including room and landscaping is maintained very well. It is quiet and peaceful (once you get used to the construction sound) and you enjoy fresh air in the gardens. It is a respite from the noisy polluted surroundings of traffic prone Thamel roads.
We stayed 5 nights at the KGH after a fantastic trip through Tibet. I also stayed at the hotel in 2014. After the 2015 earthquace the hotel has undergone some changes, and a new section is still under construction. The real value of the hotel is the placement,; in the heart of Tamel, and on walking distance to many of the places worth seeing in Kathmandu. In adition the hotel garden is a peaceful oasis in the very noisy city. Rooms are ok, but not fantastic. The staff is friendly and helpful, and breakfast is good. The hotel is a bit overpriced, and you can easily get good (better) food cheaper just outside the hotel gate. Still, all in all, I like staying at the hotel.
The breakfast buffet is always good. 5* however: Our initial room was very disappointing and smelt of mold, we were upgraded when we complained, however then we were in earshot of staff log on addy 4am.. noise travels and this became out early morning wake up. We wanted to extend our second stay for the month and the hotel was unwilling to assist... referring us instead to bookings to see if an opening for them came up. Internet reception is patchy. The garden is a wonderful oasis. In my opinion they now trade on reputation. There are nicer places at the same cost. I so have to compliment the travel desk.. this young gentleman went above and beyond to assist us.
According to Nepalese standings perhaps a nice and good hotel. We were not so enthousiast after all. Although it looks nice from the outside and is situated perfectly in the centre, the rooms aren’t that good: uncomfortable beds, shower that was nog working well (too hot), but worst of all was that they weren’t properly cleaned (or just not cleaned at all). Besides that, our room smelled like food that was cooked beneath it. So be aware if you sleep in the second building. We complained about it, and then they sprayed some deo in the room.....🙄 The breakfast is average, not high quality, but ok.
I have stayed multiple times in this Hotel, always liked it. But in this year I found that an ongoing construction of a new large wing is under way. This causes noise from about 7am to 6pm (in contrast to the Hotel's claim that it is only from 10am to 5pm). The once peaceful garden no longer is peaceful.
The Good: This hotel is an institution in Kathmandu and the KGH hotel groups original hotel. The grounds are beautiful and well kept and a lovely place to spend time. Our room was quite clean and was made up daily. Bathroom was upgraded and the shower was excellent; plenty of hot water and good pressure. The breakfast was varied and plentiful and the staff was courteous and helpful. The not so good: The furnishings in our room were cheaply made and aged. The linens were torn and on their last leg. The towels on most days were old and a little grey, and one day actually torn. The throw rug on the floor was worn and the edging coming apart. It could be loud at night, as some guests seemed to party late with no repercussions from the hotel management. There is construction on going to replace one of the buildings lost in the 2015 quake, so it can be noisy during the day, as would be expected. Disappointing for such an elegant building and storied history.
Pros: 1. Complimentary breakfast: Indian, continental, fruits, juices. tea/coffee 2.Less pollution as compared to Kathmandu 3. Travel agent on site, who booked our mountain flight 4. Neat and clean room Cons: 1. No airport pickup for domestic flights 2. No airport drop-off for any flight
Perfect location, within walking distance of a lot of sights. Very helpful staff, English speaking. Beautiful room (best in new section with view of garden). Very clean, with garden restaurant serving all day. The linens and towels could have been better, but this is the oldest hotel in Kathmandu, maybe they need an update. Would definitely recommend this, and would stay again. Excellent value for money, especially compared with other hotels in the city.
After a long international flight was nice to be met at airport. Rooms very nice and nice quiet compound to relax from the busy city. Great place to get ready for your trek and I looked forward to returning to their showers, toilet and beds.
