Econo Lodge Kalkaska2.0 out of 5.0

We had to venture out to Kalkaska due to all of the hotels being full in Traverse City. It seems clean. The tv is placed so low on the table it is difficult to watch tv in bed. The shower is so small you can't even bend over to shave your legs. Needs a nightstand on both sides of the bed and also plugs on each side. We had to stay on the 2nd floor, and the stairs are extremely steep. You can see picture on their review here.
I reviewed this property in 2013. I still stay here on the corporate buck using the clc card. It's still operated by the same people. I'm giving them the same marks but I will say I do see some improvement. I have always stayed in the same room upstairs 234 . Positives: very clean, newer towels and linen, comfortable king size bed. Improved: Attitude of the guy at the desk, much friendlier, much cleaner than in 2013, flat panel TV, newer carpet, a fridge that works, hvac unit that is newer or just upgraded, no spiders but this is Feb. Overall I was ok here this stay. If they upgraded all the rooms I'd say you will be ok here too. Caution the stairways are VERY steep, no elevator, so if that's an issue insist on a downstairs room. Room to park an RV, trailer and even a tractor trailer, places to eat nearby.
Rooms are very small, smaller than a Microtel. Two people will feel cramped. Funky smell (really, how much does Febreeze cost?) Extremely dated, and repairs were obviously not done by professionals. Fixtures were old and cheap - including the worn-out analog TV, Nothing at all to recommend this place. Cheap, cheap, cheap... During the fall viewing season, you can pay $180 or more for rooms in Traverse City or Petoskey. That's no bargain, but at $75 this place is worse. At 40 bucks, I'd say it's good enough if you're desperate. But at 75, it's a total rip-off. Not worthy of the Econolodge name.
Very Rude owner! Called for a wake up call it was shortly after 1 am the owner answered the front desk phone (think he was sleeping he lives there) and was told it was TO LATE! What?? He refused to call and didn't! I have never been told this at a hotel or motel! He also gave me the third degree of questions when I wanted to fill the ice bucket, he felt it necessary to stand watching all the while telling me "the ice is not for coolers!" I wanted it for the room! Because of needing accommodations last minute the price to stay was $140 per night, and went with Econo vs unknown hotel, what a joke! The room was ok clean but the bathroom floor is caving in you can feel it when you step on it. The rudeness went beyond incompatibility. I will stay in a tent before I would ever consider staying here again! Wish I could give a minus zero!
The room is clean enough it is an average hotel room with a small refrigerator and a small microwave. The problem is not with the facility it is with the owner. I put some creamer in my coffee and it was all congealed so I asked him where I could dump it out he told me to take it back to my room and dump it out or to walk all the way across the parking lot and dumped it out in the grass and then had the nerve to yell at me when I put it in the trash can because I don't work that well. And he didn't just yell at me once he decided to repeat it 5 times. Needless to say, next time, I will sleep in the street before I pay him to stay here again. If I could give him a negative review I would have done so.
One positive it was very very clean. The bed was so bad when you sat down the two ends would go up in the air. None of the decor matched so it wasn't inviting. The tile in the bathroom look like a two year old put it in. The same two year old painted as well. It's close to the road so it was very noisy. We paid $140 a night wasn't worth it. I know it's peak time but still. Somebody needs to put some money into the place. Will not be back and will not recommend.
Stayed one night (thankfully ONLY one). Room was dirty. Bathroom floor was filthy. Killed a couple of nasty looking spiders on the bed. Air conditioning ran, rather loudly, but did not seem to do any cooling. Phone system does not work for room to room calls. Room looks like it should have had a major upgrade 40 years ago. Not worth the price of $71.99. Stay elsewhere if possible.
We chose this hotel on a fall drive to Traverse City. Since the traverse city, petoskey area gets very expensive during peak fall weekends, this seemed like a good option. Kalkaska is few miles between Petoskey & Traverse city and is a good place to stop by. But , not this Econo Lodge. For some reason it just not match the basics you see in the Choice Group of Hotels. Check In was smooth and the manager was courteous. But the rooms were very small, bathrooms looked dingy and the entire setup is very dated. The rooms smelled weird and walls are fairly porous. I have been to old hotels in US and they are maintained very well. This misses the mark in many ways. They have a breakfast arranged in a place that not bigger than a study table. Having said they were 50% cheaper than other options that weekend. That the only consolation. I would not recommend this hotel for the quality of stay. If economics play up, this could be on option.
We stayed one night here. For the price of this room, the room needed better cleaning. It had been remodeled in the past (since the 70s?) and was due for another one.A pipe in the ceiling made a noise every time the occupants upstairs turned on a faucet. We were "trapped" in our room all night because of the very strong skunk odor outside .... that seeped inside. We did not dare turn on the a/c for fear of making the odor stronger inside. My husband and I suffered with a headache all night due to the skunk odor. We can't figure why a skunk decided to spray just outside of a hotel. Finally, near daybreak I turned the a/c on because the room was getting so stuffy with 4 people breathing all the oxygen up... by then the skunk odor had faded outside, as well.
We stayed for one night (thank goodness it wasn't longer). The room was VERY SMALL, there was a desk chair & a chair, the shower overflowed and the drain cap was loose. They put us on the second floor (had to climb the stairs) so if we needed anything we had to "unpack" our suitcases from the trunk of the car & then haul it up the stairs. We would have left immediately but the room was already paid for. We woke at 7 am & were out by 7:45 am. Terrible!
