FALL AND MONTHLY DISCOUNT! 3Bed/2Ba House - 250 Steps to the Beach!

E komo mai to Hale Makai, our piece of island paradise in Kailua. Beachside and just three houses from Kailua Beach - you are going to love it here.

Lying alongside a fabulous three-mile stretch of protected beach, Kailua is a small town on the windward side of Oahu. Kailua Beach is routinely voted one of the best beaches in the world and, with no hotels in town, only local residents and visitors who rent vacation homes get to enjoy our island lifestyle. Your family will love this kama'aina (local) way to enjoy Hawaii.

Our three bedroom, two bath home has a king, queen and two twin beds (sleeps six), living room, well-appointed open kitchen, large enclosed lanai, and shaded patio with Weber gas grill and outdoor furniture. Our smoke-free home is furnished in island style to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. You’ll feel right at home while you barbecue dinner on the patio, relax in the screened-in lanai, wander to and from the beach, watch movies or cable TV, or drift off to sleep on the comfortable beds. We also have free wireless internet access for your laptop computer so that you can stay connected! For your convenience, we provide an initial supply of paper and soap products.

And best of all is our location - just a short walk from Kailua Beach. You can pick up your cappuccino at the Kalapawai Market every morning and your shave ice (snow cone) at Island Snow every afternoon. Whether you rent windsurfers or kayaks or just use all the beach toys that come with the house - boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs/mats/towels and cooler - walking to the beach makes the days seem long and leisurely and just right for that relaxing vacation you're looking for.

And when you get tired of beach activities, Kailua town, with its restaurants, shopping and entertainment is less than a mile away. Or, after just a short ride, you can swim with the dolphins at Sea Life Park, snorkel in Hanauma Bay, hike the stunning Ko’olau mountains, swim/surf the North Shore, browse the 'Swap Meet' at the Aloha Stadium, sample Honolulu’s nightlife, walk Waikiki Beach or get to the airport.

The house is located on a large lot with a separate, one-bedroom, one-bath detached cottage that is currently rented to our grown son and his dog. The dog will be kept indoors as much as possible during your stay so that you have full use of the backyard.

*Cleaning fee includes a mandatory mid-month cleaning as well as cleaning after the rental.

Please note: This property may not be rented for less than 30 consecutive days. Rental prices cannot be reduced or adjusted based on the number of days the rental is actually used or occupied. If you stay for less than 30 days, the house will not be rented for the remainder of the month. Also, if your first dates don't show availability, try shifting them by a few days one way or the other. Since we don't always rent from the first of the month, sometimes rentals will be available a few days either way of your dates.

Excellent location

We enjoyed our stay. The location is wonderful; just a short walk to the beach. Kailua beach is absolutely lovely for beach walks, sunning, or just relaxing. The home is very spacious. We used the covered patio in back for dinner as well as working. It has a ceiling fan that feels great and helps keep the flies away while dining. The backyard is large and well kept. The owners son, Adam and his dog Finn, were pleasant to have around. Finn is super friendly with kids and adults. The home is old. The 2nd bathroom has been updated but the master has not been. The home is clean but could use updating of the master bath. There is very little room around the sink. There is a small glass ledge on the wall for items, but I needed to put my toiletries on the dresser right outside of the bathroom. We had no issues with spiders but we did have small lizards on occasion in the house which didn't bother us but can take you by surprise! The washer and dryer was nice to have but both were very old. We had no issues with either. The kitchen is well outfitted with nearly everything you need. The sink plumbing is old so food items the need disposing of need to go in the trash rather than the garbage disposal. Hawaii is famous for tiny bugs on kitchen counters so you need to keep counters free of any open food. The beds were comfortable and have ceiling fans in 2 out of 3 bedrooms was nice. The third bedroom could use one too. We had a very relaxing vacation st this property.

Christmas in Paradise

Our family of five had a perfect Christmas at Hale Makai. Kailua is our happy place, and this property put us exactly where we wanted to be. Our routine was simple - coffee on the Lanai, walk on the beach, breakfast on the Lanai, back to the beach, etc.We have stayed in quite a few VRBOs, this was one of the best. The kitchen had everything we needed, the laundry was great, plenty of towels for both the house and the beach, beach chairs, boogie boards, snorkel gear. Plenty of cards and games (look in the wicker chest) for the evenings. The house was large enough for people to spread out, with plenty of seating in the common areas to bring people together. The louvered windows made it easy to keep the tradewinds moving through the house, we only ran the A/C on a couple humid nights. There is a door between the bedrooms and living room so making coffee doesn't wake everyone. The house was quieter than we expected for being on a busy road, especially the back yard. Both the owner and on-island property manager were responsive and easy to work with. Check-in and check-out were a breeze.Overall a fantastic experience, we hope to stay here again.

Awesome experience!

We stayed for a month and had a fabulous experience. The location cannot be beat and this was the most well equiped place we've ever stayed at. There was nothing we would change. The kitchen was fully stocked and it was very helpful to have a washer and dryer. There were plenty of beach chairs, towels, snorkeling equipment and a wagon to haul it all to the beach a short walk away. Lastly, the beds were all very comfortable. I walked the Lanikai loop every morning and many times saw the most beautiful sunrises. We'll be back!

Magical!

My husband and I wanted to truly immerse ourselves in our family and the town we were going to travel to for one month. We brought our 4 & 2 year old to Kailua and were gifted with such an incredible time at Lisa's home. Immediately, we felt comfortable and set up with everything we needed and more. For four weeks, we did our best to take advantage of every second we had in Hawaii - the kayaks, the lanai/grill, the distance to the beach - nothing could have been more perfect! Our boys quickly acclimated to the time change and it wasn't long before they were mistaken for local beach kids building sand castles and riding the waves with all the provided toys. We genuinely cannot express how incredible this vacation was and we owe it in part to our wonderful stay. We opted not to rent a car, but to purchase bikes and a bike trailer for our boys to ride in - which worked out FANTASTICALLY. We decided to leave the bikes in the garage as our gift to future guests at the home, hoping they, too can ride around Kailua or over to Lanikai beach with ease. We were able to go to the neighborhood market every Sunday, make grocery runs and catch happy hours in Kailua town just a short mile away on our bikes - riding through the surrounding neighborhoods was an extra treat getting to see all of the landscapes and beautiful homes. I'm not sure there's anything we didn't cover in our stay, but it will not take us long to plan a trip back. We certainly did not want to leave. A BIG bonus for us was Finn, the dog that lives in the guesthouse with his owner, Adam. Finn made it feel even more at home for us because of how much we missed our dogs! We are so grateful for Lisa and her family allowing us to "move in" for the month before all of the chaos of school and normal life started back home. If you are considering making a trip to Hawaii, I highly recommend you check out what Kailua has to offer. We will be talking about this trip for the rest of our days! Thank you!!

The Perfect Getaway

Thanks to the pandemic, this was our first trip and our first chance to get together as a family in almost two years and the location couldn't have been better. It's a charming and comfortable house and yard in Kailua, our favorite part of Oahu. The house is an easy walk to one of the best white sand beaches in the world. A charming market as well as shops and restaurants are all within walking distance and the location is perfect for day trips to Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, Northshore, and beyond. Spending time with our kids, hiking, snorkeling, seeing the sights, and pure relaxation made this one of our best vacations ever and we would love to go back one day.

Absolutely perfect!!

We stayed 10 days and loved every minute of it! The house is clean, in a fantastic location, and we loved the true Hawaiian feel of the home. It was perfect for our family of four. Check in and check out was very easy. Debra was wonderful to work with . It is a very short walk to the most beautiful beach we have ever seen! The house is complete with beach towels, chairs, a wagon and assortment of beach toys. The house is in a great location, walking distance to the beach, stores restaurants and anything else you need. We utilized the barbecue and enjoyed dinners in the beautiful backyard. Our only complaint about the trip is that 10 days wasn’t long enough, we could’ve easily stayed a few more weeks! We absolutely loved the home and definitely look forward to going back again!! Thank you to Lisa for sharing her beautiful home, and Debra for making everything so smooth and easy!!

Wonderful Stay at Hale Makai

We just spent 10 great days at Hale Makai. The house is very comfortable, and had all the amenities we needed for our family of 4 (2 adults +2 teenagers), including anything we could think of for the beach: umbrella, cooler, boogie boards, chairs, snorkel, etc. Airy and spacious, it was impeccably clean and decorated to the last detail. Check-in and out process was easy; Debra was very responsive via text throughout our stay. Fabulous location, walking distance to beach, market, rentals, Buzz's, Lanikai, the pillbox! We spent most nights grilling in the back yard and loved having breakfast under the gazebo outside. The first couple of nights were quite noisy from trucks and cars stopping and going on the roundabout just outside the house on the main road; but the noise subsided as we stayed longer (maybe we just got used to it). Also, note that there is a rental cottage in the backyard and although it has it's own BBQ and small patio screened with a hedge, people renting the cottage need to through the backyard of the main house to access the rental- so you will see them often coming through if you are outside. Overall, we had a great stay - thanks for sharing it with us, Lisa. And thanks to Debra for all her help while we were there!

We loved our stay in this beach cottage! The location cannot be beat!!

Everything you need is in walking distance. The beach is GORGEOUS and right down the street. You can walk to the adorable Kalapawai market/cafe that has everything you would ever need. We stopped by there daily. You can also go to Bobs Pizza or the Island Snow shaved ice place just as easy. Kailua beach rental shop is right there as well so it was easy to rent surf boards. We walked and hiked every morning. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing on Kailua and Lanakai beach!! Definitely do the pillbox hike. This house was great for the five of us in our family. The bedroom/bathroom area is sectioned off with a door which also helped keep the living space more user friendly noise wise. House is equipped with anything you would ever need and the communication and checkin/out process simple and easy. The neighborhood is safe and everyone is friendly and welcoming without hassle and crowds. Active during the day but nice and quiet every evening. Fantastic shops and restaurants within a mile! Including the regular favorite grocery stores/pharmacy’s for necessities. Great home base to come home to after our day trips to N shore, Waikiki, and lots of other excursions. The house and location gave everyone in our party lots of independence and freedom to explore and enjoy!

Terrific place

We just spent a wonderful month at this property. Kailua wasn't "itself" as all navigated the Coronavirus. With parks, beaches, restaurants closed, it was a different experience. The house is so close to the beach it was easy to be able to walk to the beach and "get our exercise". Those who needed to drive to the beach and park weren't so lucky. It's a great house for eating in! Really, everything you need to prepare delicious meals to be enjoyed in the beautiful garden or on the porch. The only reason that I gave the listing accuracy a 4 instead of a 5 is the fact that there is a small cottage literally in the back yard. I'm sure it is mentioned but I didn't pay attention. Had there been guests in the cottage we could have had a different experience, as could they, with two 2 1/2 year olds in our party. Not always the quietest guests! Overall this is an awesome place. It was a great place to gather our family and enjoy each other's company. Thank you!

Unforgettable Hawaiian Vacation

Thank you for providing such a charming home. It was a perfect place for our group of 5. It was spacious, clean, safe, and equipped with so much extra... rice cookers, lots of utensils & cookware, drink flasks to fill up for the day’s trip, towels, cooler, beach chairs and toys which were fantastic additions (much more than other rentals we’ve experienced). The lanai offers more room to spread out. Lots of windows allow in natural light and the fabulous island breeze although two bedrooms do have AC, if you like. Great bonus w/a washer & dryer! Lisa is so nice and very easy to work with as well as our on-island contact who gave good local tips. The welcome basket full of goodies was the cherry on top (btw, my mother-in-law never had papaya til she tasted it from the basket and fell in love w/the fruit). The house is on a main road so traffic is expected but it’s not like a highway, at all. Just reverse into the driveway to make it easier to get out and spot pedestrians (lots of folks walk & jog in that area). Kailua is a bustling town with terrific hikes, stunning scenery, and great eateries so it draws people. Cinnamon’s has some guava chiffon pancakes that are outta this world! Boots & Kimo’s pancakes w/homemade macadamia nut sauce is worth the wait there. As a mainland transplant, it was like re-discovering the windward side of the island:) We enjoyed the gorgeous sunrises at Kailua Beach (very popular spot for professional photos - there were 4 photo shoots at 7 am). My in-laws enjoyed meals in the very well-kept & roomy backyard and loved walking to the market on the corner. We were celebrating a UH college graduation along w/my in-laws’ 49th Wedding Anniversary. It helped make this first-time visit to Hawaii a hugely memorable one for my mother-in-law. Mahalo nui loa for sharing your hale! A hui hou!

Perfect family getaway

Our group of 6 (my husband and me, 2 children ages 2yr and 5yr, my mother and sister) loved our stay here. The location is amazing - literally around the corner from the beach as well as the market. It is also within reasonable walking distance to Lanikai, and to the shops and restaurants in town. The size of the house was perfect for our group. The house had everything we needed, including a booster seat, beach towels, beach toys, chairs/mats, as well as kitchen supplies/food/dishes etc. We saw a couple of geckos, which we loved, and had no bug/insect problems at all. On our first day, Debra brought over an amazing basket of Hawaiian goodies! We would love to stay again when we have the chance. Some notes for other travelers - if you have a crawling/toddling infant or young toddler who may "get into things", I would recommend bringing outlet covers and be aware it is definitely child-friendly but not baby-proof (nor should it be). For example, there is a fireplace full of lovely river rock that is very tempting for toddlers to play with ;) ... Our very adventurous 2yr old was fine, but when he was 12-18 months old he would have definitely broken and/or eaten something he shouldn't. The driveways face onto the main road, so it is a little bit of an adventure backing out/in the first couple times, especially if you have a big car. There is some road noise in the master & front bedroom so if you are a light sleeper, ear plugs are great.
