We only enjoyed a few nights in Jo'burg, but the location of this hotel was superb. Being right in the middle of an upscale shopping district with multiple dining options nearby was ideal and meant no need to take the car every time we went out. The hotel itself is pretty standard and the interior a bit wild (found this to be true throughout SA). We chose not to include breakfast and this was great, because we got to go to "Paul" for breakfast (walking distance) every morning and enjoy some of their wonderful breakfast items! Would recommend this hotel for convenience, location and a very safe environment with tons of shopping and dining options within walking distance!

This was a nice hotel but it was very noisy - I think there was a business event on while I was staying there. I overlooked the pool and it was loud until 11pm. The food was nice but I felt the options rather limited. I found it a little odd the bathroom was in the bedroom with no wall dividing the two and no fan in the loo so no ventilation. Meant the bedroom got a bit steamy if you had a hot shower and if you opened the window it was rather noisy. Breakfast was good - continental, local or hot options and an egg station. The service throughout the hotel was pretty good - everyone was really friendly. However, I did ask for another bottle of water at reception that never appeared and there wasn't a mini bar with any extra drinks/snacks so I had to go down to the main bar to get water on a Friday night when it was really busy with party-goers. I had a pre-paid booking with work but this somehow went wrong and it wasn't explained to me, rather just added an extra night to my bill at the end of the stay which I didn't notice until I got home so was then hard to rectify. Location is really nice, lots of nice restaurants and shopping, felt really safe.

We enjoyed our stay at Protea Fire and Ice. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and treated us like family. Our room was clean, roomy and had a view over the courtyard and pool. Breakfast was buffet and offered a great variety of choices, both hot and cold. The staff in the restaurant remembered our preferences for coffee each day we were there - they paid attention to detail. The hotel is in a great location in Melrose Arch Precinct, close to shopping and restaurants. The area is clean and employs many streets designed for walking only.

Great stay at this hotel, the staff is really nice, the accomodations are nice. But, The swimming pool is really tiny and, there is no separation between the bathroom and the bedroom. Thus, it is really uncomfortable to go to this hotel with a friend...

I spent 2 nights at this hotel at the end of my trip to South Africa. At check in, staff weren't friendly or helpful, infant during my whole stay, not once did front desk staff smile or acknowledge me when i walked past. When I walked into my room I was excited by the decor, it is definitely fun and cool. However the location of the shower and bathroom in the room isn't ideal if travelling with other people. There is a sheer white curtain to give you "some" privacy. However this curtain does not pull across the entire room and its so sheer that you can see the outline of someone. Fortunately the toilet is in its own room. While the decor of the room was cool, it was very tired and not very well maintained. Furniture in the room was showing it's age, there was scratches and dents everywhere. Also the cleanliness was a concern! The first room I was allocated had hair hanging out of the shower head. I also didn't feel too safe in the first room as it was on the 1st level looking right out on the street front. I wanted to be a bit higher up to feel safer and not facing the street front. When I asked to move rooms I was rudely told the hotel is fully booked and i'd need to stay in my room. When I questioned that, the receptionist said she would move me to the other side but on the same level. Her tone of voice made it out to be such big drama. Room service was fine, there is a great option of food available. However with options like UberEats out there, I'd probably avoid room service at this hotel if i ever returned. Plus the prices were quite high compared to other restaurants in the area that were on UberEats. The milkshakes were great, slightly over rated but still fun. Also, this hotel seems to stay in business thanks to all the Emirates cabin crew there. The lobby was always full of crew checking in/out. One thing i found bizarre was whenever I called up for room service, the first question asked was "Are you Emirates cabin crew?" Each time I said no, but i wonder if i said yes would that meant I'd have gotten a discount? Potentially the hotel needs to look into this! Also, it's annoying being constantly asked are you Emirates Cabin Crew!

Stayed 2 night for business in Nov. Staff were very friendly & helpful, check in/check out was an absolute breeze. Despite the somewhat trendy night-club air of the place, I found it very quiet and was not disturbed at all. The hotel does have quite an odd decor, hard to say what the theme is. It's not bad, just unlike anywhere I have stayed before. Room was good, with a large & comfortable double bed. The toilet is separate to the room, but the shower and sink are in the room, albeit separated by a curtain. Breakfast is a good buffet of cooked food, fruit, cereal etc. I cannot speak for the restaurant, but the burger I ordered as room service was exceptional, highly recommended. The location is great, it is & feels very safe, with lots of bars & restaurants in Melrose Arch.

The checking was excellent. The location of the hotel is excellent and upmarket. The hotel is very cosy and clean. The atmosphere is excellent. You cant go wrong when using this hotel. It is vibrant and in a safe exciting area and also well priced. The staff is also friendly and useful.

This is my fourth time to stay at Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, I loved it over there it is centrally located. Staff tend to remember frequent clients, I feel home being there and at the same time they deliver an exceptional service. Around the hotel, there is an amazing shopping area and prices are affordable. Big Thank you to Zanele N. Today actually she served me my dinner, it is not my first time to see her, she has always been friendly, attentive and police. And of course the other Zenelle and the rest of the team. All the staff there are amazing and welcoming. I consider this hotel as a second home to me. They have fitness center and a nice swimming pool, Fitness centre has basic equipment (running machines, spinner, elliptical dumbells and a bench), it is quite basic, however, if you are a gym rat, virgin active is around the corner and you can ask the hotel staff for a discounted voucher, alternatively you can use fitness platinum which is 3 blocks away and it is much cheaper. They are known for their milkshakes, try Oreo one and forget about Virgin Active LOL.

Well it started with an odd room where the shower and sink is in the bedroom. Okay not really put off by that and it is a bonus for getting wrinkles out of your clothing. Room service was prompt but missing my drink. Rang room service - who promised to bring it up. Call 10 minutes later to advise my selection was no longer available so substituted. Room comfortable. Breakfast has a reasonable selection.Hotel convenient if you want to be able to walk around Melrose Arch shopping centre. Also avoids the traffic chaos that is Sandton. Milkshake bar a bit of fun and shakes very nice. Bar service needs a lot of improvement - slow to come to table - had to follow up for order - drink and bill slow to arrive.

-The hotel design is great with designer furnishings and portrays of famous personalities all over the hotel and inside the rooms. -In addition to that they have some seriously good milkshakes which I advise for breakfast, lunch and dinner (they even have some with alcohol). -The immense downside of this hotel was the cleaning. When I checked into my room there was a heaped dirty room service tray right next to my door (in the corridor.) Inside the room the floor was scattered with rosmarine in addition to one single dirty crusted fork which was on the chair. On the floor there were also small pieces of paper and even strands of braided African hair!! (like the ones some African ladies put in as extensions) -At one time the corridor was full of cleaners (around 5 of them) just lazing around sitting on the floor checking their phones and chatting with one another, which looked extremely unprofessional considering that even the corridor had debris on it and was not clean. -When I checked out of my room I could not pass through the corridor due to the way the cleaning trolley was placed and had to move it by myself to pass. -The staff at check-out tried to charge me for a phone call that I never made. -The in-room dining book was so dirty, greasy and tattered that I was disgusted to touch it so that I could move it off the desk, not to mention open it, juk! This hotel has the potential to be great if it would up its cleanliness and staff standards.
