May de Ville Old Quarter4.0 out of 5.0

We travel a bit and research properties relatively throughly via TA but this one slipped through the cracks! Whilst the May de Ville is an amazing location in the old quarter, I would suggest booking elsewhere, even if you are only sleeping in there As soon as you walk in the lobby it smells damp/musty - a few delicious smelling oil burners could make world of difference and overall its just a little dated We booked a superior twin room, and whilst it is visibly clean, it again smelt damp and musty, was small and whilst there a window to the outside it was dark. I have heard there is a newer wing but the hotel was fully booked and we were unable to upgrade or change rooms. The bathroom has a weird shower over bath setup, that is quite a mission to get into and also doesn't feel secured to a wall as it moves and makes noises. Also the rain shower and water pressure was poor Views from the dining and pool area are gorgeous looking towards the lake, which is nice for the buffet breakfast which was included in our room price, and whilst my friend said the omelette was good, there was little else worthy of mention (even the bacon was bland) that we left the hotel the next couple days for Street food. I might have just become a fussy traveller but this is definitely not worth the 8.4 booking.com had it at & if I was to return I would stay across the road at the Tirant Hotel which smelled lovely, also has a pool and an amazing rooftop bar!
This hotel was perfect, it was in a great location for exploring the old quarter of Hanoi. It was clean and staff were friendly, even when you try to check out two days early, this wasn't the hotels fault, but a fault of the travel company I booked with. L The hotel rooms were fairly modern and spacious, staff were friendly. Upon stepping out of the hotel, you are on the busy streets of Hanoi, once you get used to walking the streets without getting run over by a scooter, this hotel makes it a great place to explore.
Not luxurious but meets the needs of a good night sleep while you are out exploring in the day. We had the opportunity to stay there twice and experienced both the old and new wing. Breakfast is very good - with a egg, waffle, pho station on top of their buffet spread. If you get there early, you can choose to sit near the far end which overlooks the lake. The main selling point is location - Circle K directly opposite, near to the weekend market, tons of shops around, and within walking distance to many of the top 50 restaurants in Tripadvisor.
We spent 3 days at this nice hotel. The location was perfect in the old town-the hotel overall was fine with good service. Only negative comments is about the room: was small and a strange smell of mold :(
The May De Ville is apparently a four star hotel. So I think that as a guest in a four star hotel, one can reasonably expect a certain (higher) level of service and quality. Alas the May De Ville fell down here completely. The service was a spectacular failure. No welcome at check in. Not even a smile. No one ever asked how our stay had been. We had to seek out staff every time we needed/wanted something, and I mean in situations where we could have reasonably expected staff to be proactive and helpful. For example, I was sat by the pool for a few hours one afternoon and no staff walked the few meters from the bar to the poolside to see if I wanted some food or a drink, forcing me to trudge into the bar in wet clothes to ask. Breakfast was a buffet of bland offerings. The staff looked horrifically bored. Not a smile or good morning or hello in sight. There was a wee station for the chef to make eggs, pho and waffles to order, but a full hour and a half before breakfast finished the staff refused to turn on the waffle iron to make fresh waffles saying that it would take too long, directing us instead to the ones they had pre-cooked and which were rather stale. Our request for Vietnamese coffee rather than the tepid, filter kind at the buffet was met with a sigh of resigned agreement rather than a cheerful no worries. These may sound like petty gripes to some readers but, again, it's a four star hotel with a bigger price tag. The service level should be commensurate with the quality expected from a higher end hotel. Guests should feel welcome and that small, reasonable requests aren't somehow inconveniencing the staff. The rooms are not remotely soundproof. I'd almost say that the acoustics in the place managed to amplify every footstep and conversation on level 7 throughout the night. The noises of guests coming in and out until 2am didn't promote a good nights sleep. On the positives, the room was clean and comfortable. The pool area is very pleasant and has a killer view of the lake in the Old Quarter. The location is perfect. Old Quarter centre. There's another hotel literally across the street that we also stayed in on this trip and that I have reviewed as a solid 5 out of 5. That one was fully booked on our return to Hanoi, which is why we thought we'd try the May De Ville. I refer to my TripAdvisor review of the place across the street, and recommend that your experience there will be far more satisfactory than at the May De Ville.
If you don't mind the chaotic traffic and would prefer being a part of the action then this hotel is a good choice. The rooms are a bit small but has the basic amenities. Majority of TV programs are dubbed in local language. The breakfast spread is a good mix of local and standard options. Just opposite the hotel is Connect K - good option for water, snacks and beer in case you get bored elsewhere! Comfortable stay. Recommended for family stay.
The May de Ville in the Old Quarter was a perfect place to stay and the location is sensational. We found the location in the heart of the Old Quarter ideal for exploring the city. Beautiful views of the lake while having breakfast and from the pool added to the amazing experience
This was the worst hotel we stayed at in Vietnam. When we checked into the hotel and went to our room we were very disappointed to see that we were given two single beds instead of a double. However, we didn't want to cause any hassle so we asked to change rooms when we came back from an overnight tour. When changing rooms, reception insisted that we had stolen one of their laundry backs - to which neither of us had touched or taken. We tried to tell them we had no idea about it but they didn't believe us. When we returned, again we were accused about the laundry bag and asked to check our luggage again. When we arrived to our new room, thank goodness it had a double bed and was actually bigger than our precious room which was great! However, the positives soon stopped there when we discovered that our toilet didn't flush properly, our A/C was not working and neither was our wifi. One of the hotels staff did come and fix these problems for us very promptly which was good. The worst part of this hotel for us was the restaurant. On our last night staying here we thought we would treat ourselves by eating at a supposed 4 star hotel. Firstly, the restaurant was too cold - we had to move to the other side of the restaurant because we were shivering. Secondly, the timings of the food were outrageous. Not only did we wait 40 minutes to receive some garlic bread and soup, we received our appetisers at different times from one another and then while we hadn't finished we were given our mains. To top it off our mains were so underwhelming and the worst food we have eaten in Vietnam. I ordered the spaghetti bologna which was so watery, had no meat and the pasta was very over cooked. Looked nothing like the picture! My partner ordered the Australian beef and asked for medium to which he then received a blue piece of meat that was barely cooked. We can't believe we paid 650,000 for a meal we didn't even eat/enjoy. Overall the only thing this hotel has going for it is the prime location which is right in the middle of the old quarter. Do not recommend this hotel.
Stayed here for a few days and found it be good location within walking distance of places of interest and many shops. Easy to find your way around with no hassle. Its only a few minutes walk to Hoan Kiem Lake. Room was large and very clean, at the back so didn't have a view but it was quiet. No problems. Great selection on offer for breakfast. Didnt use the small gym or roofpool Staff were pleasant, efficient and eager to please. Would stay again and recommend
My friends and I lived here for an entire month while we were studying abroad in Hanoi. Good breakfast, friendly staff. We only had a few problems with the rooms, and most of them occurred in rooms in the back side of the hotel. If possible, get a room that you access from the front elevators, not the back ones. The workout room isn't much but it suffices, has everything you need except for weights. Nice pool on the roof and a great location.
