We were told that because we were sitting outside we couldn't have the Father's Day deal (promoted all over the pub) ... the reason being... the computer system wouldn't allow them to do it. I had salmon which was cold and dry and my prawn starter just tasted of ketchup. Waitresses were lovely but some of the male staff were very rude. All in all, not a particularly nice experience
Just the one night in the hotel. Set in beautiful grounds with large wooded area at the back of the gardens. Special mention to Elaine on Reception but all staff were helpful and welcoming. Rooms very good size with a bed that gave room to starfish. Had two course dinner and enough choice with wine for around £50. Not much else in Birdlip but in a way that was the excuse to get out and explore. Give it a try and don't worry about a little lick of paint being needed here and there -enjoy .....
We have just had Sunday lunch at the Royal George and the experience was certainly not one to be repeated. Four of us arrived for our meal which had been booked for 1pm. Our order was taken very promptly but, after quite some time, a very pleasant waitress was sent to apologise for the wait. Even so, we were sitting with no food for almost 45 minutes until our meals eventually arrived. It quickly became apparent that the long delay was not, as might have been assumed, for a busy chef to prepare our meals. The food on our plates had all the signs of having been cooked and left waiting for quite some time. The roast chicken was dry; the beef was extremely dry, overcooked and chewy; the wagyu burger was on the brink of cremation. After having expressed our disappointment at the poor quality of our meals, we were offered puddings at no cost. We accepted this offer but, when the bill came, we noted that we had been charged for two of the puddings. However Sunday lunch at this venue had already been a complete let down and it wasn't worth the bother of complaining further. We left with no wish to ever return.
First impressions were magnificent. Came around the corner and this quaint hotel comes into view. Greeting and reception was very friendly and helpful. Room very comfortable and not too small. Large comfy bed. No fridge or safe The modern 'old english' bar and restaurant was full of happy travellers. Overall a very pleasant stopover that I recommend to others.
we stayed here for three days, rooms were a nice size and clean and comfortable, food was very good, we ate there every evening of our stay and had breakfast there, all meals were great, staff were helpful and attentive, the only down side was rooms which overlook the garden can be a bit noisy if people are outside drinking late, we just closed the window so no problem, but i did hear other customers complain about this, its not a big enough problem to stop me staying there again.
A one night stay, with dinner in the bar/garden, turned into something akin to Fawlty Towers, without the comedy. My half chicken was a plate of grey. Bar staff were shocking, especially the bored, yawning female who glared rather than smiled. Error after error - e.g. triple room with a total of two bath towels and one hand towel - with the grand finale of being spoken to in a patronising way by the young male 'manager' after I couldn't get the complicated wifi system to work. The only plus point was the lovely breakfast waitress and the actual breakfast.
I was here for my sisters wedding on the 27th may. All I can really say is thank you so so much! The staff were amazing, no job too small for any of them. The events manager and the general manger were there every step of the way too make sure everything ran smoothly (and it did). Working in hotels and running weddings for a living, I know how stressful they can be and how much hassle they can cause, but none of that was the case. I can't fault anything, literally nothing! The food was outstanding, the room was stunning, the rooms in the hotel were clean and comfy, the staff again were impeccable ( I can't thank the staff enough), the garden and the newly built gazebo is a great addition for photos! On behalf of all the guests that attended the wedding, I would like to say a massive thank you! On behalf of the whole Harris family and the newly married couple, it was a very special day for all of us and the Royal George team made it just that little bit more special. Oh and too the barmaid who looked after me when I was not in the best of shapes, didn't get a chance to thank you personally for taking care of a very drunk best man!
The one female waiting staff member was utterly indiffernet to my highchair request, the other behind the bar was literally rude. My god. By far the worst most unfriendly staff ive ever come accross. Seriously dont bother coming here. This was a great fun place to stop about ten years ago but now utter rubbish.
We were walking the Cotswold Way and staying overnight at the hotel when my husband was taken ill and had to be admitted to hospital. The staff were fantastic, behaving in a professional and supportive manner with nothing too much trouble. They helped me in a very stressful situation and I would like to thank them for this and express my gratitude , they even changed room bookings so we could stay on in the same room for another night and recuperate . We have stayed at the hotel before and enjoyed it then as the rooms are good and well equipped and there is a good selection of food available in either the bar or restaurant. Thanks again to the manager and his staff who do put people first !
A lovely Sunday lunch, especially at £5 each with the Facebook offer :-). The kids meals were very impressive also. Lovely setting and atmosphere and the staff were welcoming and polite also. (It would have been a five star rating but I think the bar staff were stretched as I had to remind the waitress about my latte a number of times).
