Upon our arrival at the Campbell House we were greeted with the news that our reservation through Orbitz had not been sent to the House. After welcoming us with a cool drink and a freshened towel, the owners did everything in their power to ameliorate the situation. They contacted Orbitz for us, spent time untying the red tape involved and made sure we were not charged for the stay. They gave us an upgrade for one night at the Campbell House, found us a room at another Heritage House for the rest of our visit and moved our luggage to the new hotel. None of this was necessary on their part, but they understood our dilemma and worked hard to remedy the situation. Without a doubt this is a beautiful hotel but what adds to the charm is the friendly and professional owners and staff. We will definitely stay here again when we visit Penang.
I absolutely loved my stay at Campbell House. It's one of the most interesting hotels I've ever stayed in. I loved the detail and style of the hotel and the rooms. I loved the fact that there was a small library directly outside of my room. I also really appreciated the helpful and friendly staff members. They were enthusiastic to provide information on the area, from larger tour companies to smaller more personalized info such as where to look for the best street food vendors that offered vegetarian cuisine. The breakfast in the hotel was delicious as well. On top of the breakfast being included, each day they also stocked the fridge in my room with fresh water, homemade lemon tea, and something sweet from the restaurant. This hotel is exceptional, and I highly recommend it.
This hotel is nearly perfect. You are immediately struck by the old-world charm. The look is really well executed with lots of beautiful furnishings and details throughout, including the individually decorated rooms. Each room has a small fridge with complimentary iced lemon tea (wickedly good), water and a desert. Organic toiletries were really nice. Breakfast was really impressive. It was high quality and very generous. The service is really, really fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable and always willing to help. It is located in the heart of the George Town historical district within a short walking distance to nearly all of the attractions and inexpensive restaurants. We arranged a pick-up from the airport through the hotel, which was seamless (and the same price as a regular taxi). As a light sleeper, the street noise -- especially from our corner room -- was slightly bothersome (hence, 4 instead of 5 stars for room comfort), but I don't think it would be any better elsewhere. After all, you go to George Town because it is so lively. I would not stay anywhere else.
