CLASSIC WATERFRONT CABIN WITH GREAT SUNSETS, AND A SUPER LOCATION NEAR ROCHE HARBOR
Don’t try to change the island, let the island change you….
For more than forty years, Sunset Vista has built and hosted a happy tribe of vacationers that want to connect in groups of 2 – 6 and create memories. Many like the lowkey, even rustic, charm of this oceanfront cabin. Of course, there are a few visitors that say “meh”. If you want a mint on your pillow or think pine needles are yucky, this may not be the best option. But if you are curious about building memories in a low-key relaxed setting near Roche Harbor Resort, keep reading!
The home is located down a wooded driveway in the desirable Roche Harbor area. The neighboring streets are great for biking and walking while the dining, shopping, and marina activities at Roche Harbor are within a 5-minute drive or easy 20-minute walk.
From the deck there are marvelous views of Speiden Island and you will also have a front row seat to watch the boating activity heading to and from Roche Harbor and Sydney, BC. On long summer evenings you are positioned to catch some of the best sunsets in the world.
On the main floor, there is a bath with a shower as well as a private bedroom with a queen bed. Other beds are located on an open loft upstairs. This area provides two separate sleeping areas divided by a wall, one with two twin beds and the other with a full-size bed. Please note that the open loft does not provide total privacy for either of the upstairs sleeping areas. The living room features a wood burning fireplace (wood not supplied) and book nook.
Sunset Vista is on medium bank waterfront (caution to all…especially parents!) with no direct shoreline access, however it is only a five-minute walk to the beautiful neighborhood beach known as The Isthmus.
During the last three years, we have made continual changes and upgrades...some are reflected in the pictures and some are not since they are very new. They include: New living room sectional. New dining room table. Maytag stainless range and stove. Maytag stainless refrigerator/freezer. Whirlpool stainless microwave. All five beds have a new bedframe or mattress and provide better support, including two Beautyrest Black queen mattresses (hotel quality). As well, new lamps, nightstands, books, kitchen utensils, plates, glasses and pots/pans have been added.
Tech update: In 2019, we upgraded online connectivity via wireless internet. Based on fast.com, it delivers consistently 25 MBPS internet speed, which does support streaming multiple devices….at least three by our count!
One more thing…the countertops are orange. Breathe into your heart center, embrace the orangeness and then take a look out the window at the Pacific Ocean. A group of seals is out there waiting for you at sunset and you should join them in enjoying the orange sunset.

Please notes there are 2 steps to the entrance. The interior 13 step stairs are narrow and steep (8.25" rise 9")

A peaceful haven—just what I needed
We were very happy with this property. I was charmed by the transparency in the property's description of the orange counters and the narrow staircase, and hopeful when I read the reviews mentioning the wildlife spotted from the deck. One reviewer complained about the smell, which worried me a bit. There IS a distinctive smell, but it just made us think of going to our grandparents' cabins as children. I think it's just a smell to be expected in any old, wooden cabin. It wasn't offputting to us at all. I'm the only one who might have had an issue with the stairs, and I had no problem going up, but I did notice the narrow steps and had to be more mindful and hold on coming down. We only went up there once to look around (and to enjoy rocking in the comfy IKEA chair that I might have totally moved downstairs if the stairs were easier), but we spent most of our stay on the deck.
The wooded property gave the house a very peaceful and private feel and was a big part of the reason we chose this older home over the more modern properties available. Although we could see the neighboring houses from the deck, we never heard a peep from them and only spotted one set of neighbors once for a few minutes during our entire stay.
When we still hadn't seen any wildlife other than birds by the time we went to bed on our last night, we were afraid we were just out of luck this trip, but on our last morning we were graced with seals just below the deck and an orca further out. We'll be back!

Disappointment
Went there for a holiday of 5 nights. Long trip to get there and felt like it was not worth it at all. Exterior appearance on arrival was concerning. Once inside noticed strong musty smell and odor of mildew. So strong at times it was overwhelming. Chimney damper had been left open and place was freezing until we figured that one out. Lower bedroom and kitchen right next to septic field so opening windows to air out created yet another miserable odor issue. Bed in lower bedroom had only sheet on bed. No mattress protector which felt unsanitary. View obstructed by overgrown brush. Patio furniture on deck was old, rusty, and dirty. Asked before we got there about potential power outages. Told there were flashlights and heat from fireplace. One nonworking flashlight on premises and fireplace not usable in windy conditions due to strong downdraft. After returning home it took us multiple washes of our clothes with vinegar and baking soda to get the mildew stench out. Sinus issues for days after as well. Passed all this on to property management but got no where. This is a hard pass. I am angry and feel very ripped off. For the money, owners should be doing a lot more to make this place acceptable. A total waste of money and disappointment of what should have been an restful, enjoyable hard earned vacation.

Heaven on Earth
We were absolutely thrilled when we opened the front door and saw the magnificent view before us. The house was super clean and we felt at home right away. We enjoyed a wonderful, peaceful, and relaxing week exploring all the major highlights of the island and enjoying the magnificent sunsets each evening from the deck. We even saw some seals and egrets . It was an experience that we hope to enjoy again soon.

Very easy with excellent communication and reminders of steps and processes. The gentleman who takes care of the trash and other details was terrific . He got his college degree from Northern Arizona University while I was a professor.

I'm not sure I can add much more to the already glowing reviews for this cool, cozy, funky (Hello 1977! In a good way) cabin. As a one-time resident and 1986 graduate of the local high school, I know all the best spots on San Juan Island -- and this is one of them. The view, sunsets, breezes and salt air are heaven. And I'd never seen a sea lion chomp a salmon in half -- until one morning while having coffee on the deck here. If available, we plan to be back.

Perfect Peace
The property is exactly as described. We loved it. Very peaceful, homey comfort. Fantastic view to watch sunset. We had some combination of visits from fox, racoon, eagles, and seals every day. The beds are very comfortable. Love the cabin atmosphere. We would return in an instant. Also, the property managers were immediately responsive to the one question we had.

Hidden Gem on SJI
This lovely home exceeded our expectations in every way! We first arrived at sunset—a magical time at this house—and fell in love with the location. We enjoyed every moment inside (love the wonderful views from all the windows!) and outside (the great two-seater overlooking the water was the perfect spot to relax—and the little beach offered some fun tidepool viewing and some great sea glass to take home!). We really enjoyed the beauty of the area—hikes with breathtaking views, kayaking, the lavender farm, the charm of Roche Harbor. However, we really didn’t need to go far from “home” to enjoy ourselves. The deer sleeping outside the house, the raccoons hanging out on the beach and the seals swimming by were all bonuses to us. We hated to leave and we really hope to return to this special place very soon!

Amazing Place!
Outstanding property! We stayed for a week and loved every minute of it. The location is perfect. Walking distance to Roche Harbor (2'ish miles) and a 15 minute drive to Friday Harbor. The best part though...the view. Absolutely gorgeous sunsets! Harbor seals out front all day but especially in the mornings. We had everything we needed. Beautiful place that was built to last and one that is clearly still loved by its owner. Management company was outstanding. Extremely timely communication both before and during our stay from Kyle and Leila. They answered all of my questions about the layout prior to our stay; notified us via text when the home was ready for us on our day of arrival. When we ran low on laundry detergent, it was a quick text and they drove more over. There is nothing I would change. Highly recommend and will definitely rent again.

Lovely, relaxing get away!
Just perfect! We have a 3yo and 9mo old and just wanted to get away for a long weekend. The cabin is lovely and just as described. Clean with stunning views. Everything worked great and the whole experience was smooth and fun! Saw deer, raccoons, seals, and of course lots of birds. Beds and linens were comfy and clean. Kitchen actually had a decent set of knives!!
It was easy to keep the little ones out of things. Lovely decor but not full of clutter or non childsafe items. Only the one bedroom with a door bc upstairs is a loft but that didn't matter for us.
Thank you for sharing this great cabin! We'll be back!
