On a quiet side street between the train station and the old part of town = perfectly located for a weekend trip. Clean, friendly, breakfast was great, we could leave our luggage when our room booking was over. The ladies at reception helped with recommendations so we felt well looked after. Very welcoming, can recommend further!
My boyfriend and I stayed one night, in a room with a terrace. Pro : typical German breakfast included in price, cute/“typisch Deutsch”hotel, lovely staff who speak both French and English. Cons: no fitness room, my boyfriend is sensitive to textures and the sheets were not great for him, pricey (180€/night).
As other reviewers have stated this hotel is on several floors and there is no lift so if you find stairs difficult, you should bear this in mind. However, although we were quite prepared to lug our suitcases up to our room on the second floor ourselves, the male receptionist on duty when we arrived, insisted on carrying them up for us. We viewed the stairs as a good exercise opportunity – particularly after over-indulging in the excellent breakfasts! The hotel ran like a well-oiled machine. Everything in the room worked, and the various staff on duty seemed committed to providing a good service. Particularly impressive was the attention paid to keeping the breakfast buffet well-stocked. For the size of the hotel there was a very wide selection of meats and cheeses etc, and my favourite Bircher muesli which was homemade. The breakfast room is quite small and during our stay it seemed to be that the earlier you came, the less crowded it was. On our first morning the rush hour seemed to be about 9.30 am – when we took the last table available. There was a radiator in our room which we only needed to have on low during our visit and we noted the air-conditioning unit on the wall for use if necessary at other times.
This is an older hotel with style located on the edge of old town a 5 minute walk from train station. The room was bright and very comfortable. We had a large third floor balcony that was great for late afternoon wine and cheese. The continental breakfast was generous and varied. While not a problem for us, there is no elevator. But the staircase is wide and has a sturdy banister. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
My husband and I just finished a 10 day stay at the Hotel Barbara in Freiburg. It was perfect - the location in the old town, near the train station, 1 block from trams, on a quiet street close to anything we needed. Lovely building, comfortable room with balcony, great plumbing, AC ( much appreciated in the heat wave), delicious breakfast every morning, kind and attentive service. They were extremely helpful! Laundry service was very reasonable. We are very grateful to have found this gem of a hotel. We'd go back in a heartbeat!
This hotel has a friendly, family feeling. Very close to station and only 5 minutes walk from the old town. The old town itself is very compact and easy to walk around. Nice room with air conditioning, minibar, safe, free wifi and excellent shower. Good breakfast with homemade jam, good selection of delicious cheeses and the only place on my trip with a freshly cooked soft boiled egg.
We recently spent 5 nights at Hotel Barbara. We couldn't have asked for a more thoughtful and attentive front desk staff. They made sure that our stay with them was a wonderful memory. The hotel is in a great location within walking distance of the Old Town and the train station. There were plenty of restaurants and shops close by. We started each morning off with a delicious breakfast and returned at the end of our daily adventures, to a very clean room. The only difficulty we had was there was no elevator and lots of stairs to get to the rooms. However the observant staff noticed our difficulty right away and stepped in with a solution that was just right for our circumstances. We found our room a bit tight to get around but appreciated it was in a heritage building so the room was small. The ambience of the hotel more than made up for the size of the room.
We spent two weeks travelling in the Basle-Berne region in Switzerland, then the Colmar-Strasbourg region in France and finally a brief visit to Freiburg. All our other hotels were in the "modern" category, so it was a pleasant change to stay in this old-fashioned hotel at a reasonable cost. Attractive exterior and a very short walk to the old town. Breakfast was included (boiled eggs to order, cold meats, toast, croissants, pot of coffee etc) - much appreciated after the nonsense of Swiss breakfasts costing CHF 25 whether you had a full meal or just a coffee and a croissant, meaning we had to start each day looking for breakfast somewhere else.... No A/C but it was not hot while we were there. No lift but we were on the first floor. Rooms are small for couples but we were brother and sister so not sharing a room. Delightful staff.
This hotel is in a great location - a 10 minute walk to the Munster in the aldstadt.. It's also cheap and easy if you have a car. We were able to pull up on the street outside for a few minutes whilst we unloaded and then ywe drove a block away to a multi-storey. The hotel gave us a ticket for two nights when we arrived - at a cost of 12 euro a night ( good for Freiburg). We paid the hotel when we checked out so it couldn't have been easier. Breakfast was good - cold meats, breads , cereals and fresh fruits. They also cooked a boiled egg to order. Staff were friendly. Wifi was also good. The bed was firm and comfy but only one pillow and lumpy. It is an old house - it has the benefits of a lovely atmosphere but also some of the pitfalls such as no lift. The worst of all was the temperature of the room. We stayed in June with temperatures of mid 30.'s. We had one of the bigger rooms but it was small..... and with no air conditioning it was an unbearable sweat box. We found a fan and it helped a little but not enough to get a good nights sleep. We couldn't leave the the windows open during the day because they have a pigeon problem. We would come back in the winter but would not consider returning in the summer.
This is a very quaint old hotel in a great location - easy walking distance to everything. Downsides were the buzzer to get in (altho they were always quick to buzz us in), walking up 4 flights of stairs with our bags (no lift), having to pay for parking, and the size of the room (really, really tiny). Upsides were the location (very quiet side street next to a very busy area), the breakfast, the price, and the very friendly staff. The room was really clean and very cute, and the old-style hotel really charming tho.
