Large rooms, comfortable beds. it was pouring rain when we got there so the large space was nice to have the space. (Most hotels we had stayed at during our trip were much smaller). When the rain finally stopped, we had a great view of the glacier from our room Restaurant had good food.
Usual Scenic hotel, very good facilities, great bedroom and bathroom, and good buffet breakfast. Close to all the sights and restaurants. I would always choose a Scenic hotel if i had a choice. What's not to like.
This was the second of two Scenic hotels we stayed in on our group tour of South Island, the first being in Dunedin, and the quality and standard here was as good if not better. Our room, like Dunedin, was a bit of a trek from Reception in what may have been an annexe to the original building. It was spacious, well equipped and had a lovely view of the mountains. Dinner that night was table d’hote and was beautifully presented and very tasty. Breakfast comprised a big range of freshly cooked items plus the usual presentation of fresh fruits, pastries etc. Very good service from the attentive staff and it was a shame we couldn’t stay longer than one night.
Our family of 4 stayed one night on, while making our way up Highway 6. The hotel is adequate and does the job. Room appeared clean, and amenities were good. Good location for all the helicopter tours. Staff were all friendly. It seemed that we may have been below a communal bathroom, as in the evening before bed there was a lot of door sliding and flushing toilets that could be heard above. I was concerned that we would be disturbed by the noise throughout the night but thankfully it seemed to quieten down later on. Breakfast was very average, and $29 for an adult, which we found expensive.
Stayed with a US tour group. My husband & I found the room & bathroom to be quite small, but very clean and well-appointed. The hotel is walking distance to everything in town. The staff - mostly young people with one year work visas - were friendly, helpful and delightful! The breakfast buffet was very good, with both hot & cold choices. A nice stay in a lovely little town!
We had been in NZ for three weeks and this is one of the worst places we stayed in. Considering Franz Joseph area does not have a lot of accommodation, we decided to go with the expensive option of the Scenic Hotel to make sure we had a nice quality stay. As we were supposed to go the helicopter tour, we arrived quite early at Franz Joseph Glacier (11am) and due to poor weather conditions we could not go on our tour and hence we decided to head towards the hotel around lunch time. We were welcomed by a very rude receptionist who told us to come back by 3pm for check out. It was pouring outside and the receptionist did not even try to accommodate us or find a solution. While the hotel main building and reception area is nice and modern, our room was located in the rear building and was extremely basic, old, dark and poorly furnished. We were on the ground floor with views on the parking slot. Considering the price we pay, this was far away from what we expected. As our room was not welcoming, we decided to go for drinks in the main building. The fireplace was very nice but the bartender not very experienced - one of them split the beer of my husband on the table and when asked for recommendation on the wine list, they could not help us. In the morning, you did not need an alarm clock as you were easily awake by the noise made by either leaving guests and/or housekeeper. Very disappointing stay. Not recommended.
Very Comfortable room and cosy. The dining experience was a highlight. Our meal in the evening was perfect and the staff were quick and slick. Breakfast was also a pleasant surprise with a great cooked selection to healthy choices. Close to all amenities. A great place to stay.
Clean comfortable room, with everything you need. Comfortable bed, friendly accommodating staff. Easy access to all amenities. Easy parking, good ammenities for guests including a guest laundry which is helpful when on the road
convenient on main drag, but not at all noisy, modern, all the amenities, very clean hotel, good breakfast with lots of selections, staff very friendly-made phone calls for us, good channels on TV, nice little balcony.
We arrived at this beautiful hotel by the Franz Josef Glacier. The weather was not wonderful but it was a nice property to spend the night at. Within walking distance from the Hot Pools, downtown area and local restaurants. We were at the tail end of the storm and the Glacier was cloud covered but what a beautiful place to spend the evening and morning. I was able to walk about without getting too wet and the property is beautiful. The lobby and dining area just breathtaking in the morning for Breakfast. Floor to ceiling windows to view the Glacier and surrounding Southern Alps. Nice hiking locally too within 10 minutes walking.
