Hotel La Gioconda3.0 out of 5.0

Set in a perfect location amidst the city, this hotel isn't bad, but does have drawbacks and does need updates and repairs. The lobby is tired and old, the rooms are very dated. The shower had terrible signs of old orange mould and the water flows out into the central bathroom itself, the air conditioner was very loud and kept us up--and then leaked all over the rug and was wet for two days. The view is of the bustling street below--not much of a perfect view, but a view nonetheless. We had many stairs to climb to our room--there was no working elevator--not a big problem, but it can be exhausting after already walking for hours during the day. I'd stayed here years before and it was cleaner back when--and the location is good and price wasn't too steep, so I returned. But I was sorry to see it had fallen badly. Yes--it is the hotel which recovered the stolen 'La Gioconda' (The Mona Lisa), but that's it's only real claim to fame. The place was rather darkish--not real bright or welcoming. For just a bed and non-special breakfast, no luxuries, no frills, no extra cleanliness, this place is fine, safe, central and good enough for those not wanting to spend too much money. For those who'd like more privacy, complementary items, more service, a %100 reliable Wifi, grand breakfast and such--you should find somewhere else. The place wasn't terrible--but it surely had its weaknesses and drawbacks.
We went here for a night. Came before check in time but the staff let us leave our bags. We had a good deal for the room from hotels.ca. We got a double bed with a single bed room. The room was clean and had it's own washroom. Floors are a bit creaky but clean. The main door to the room is hard to open/lock 🔐. I think it needed to be replaced. The hotel is situated in a busy street so it was a bit noisy with all the cars and people passing by in the morning. Not too much at night so it was fine. The noise was our alarm clock which served good because you want to explore Florence more. Staff are helpful amd cordial. -Free Bfast -Near cool shops and restaurants -Near the Da Vinci musem -Near the Cathedral (Duomo) -Affordable -Family friendly
I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights, and the only thing it offers was its location just 2 min walk to the duomo and to the center. The hotel is very old and definitely require an elevator and the room and the toilet need renovation. I dont recommend it to anyone
The location was very close to the central cathedral (maybe a five minute walk) and to the train station (again, five minutes in the other direction). It was easy to overlook, but more than nice enough on the inside. The staff was knowledgable and friendly.
I booked this hotel because it's near the center. It's really easy to find and although it's a bit old,it's nice. There's no curtain on the bath tub,but you manage, not without having water all over the place. The owners had a dog that had full access to the hotel, even to the breakfast lounge so,sometimes you were eating and she was looking at you hoping for you to give her a bit. It didn't bother me,but it's not really sanitary
The staff at neighboring hotel opened my wine every night. Armondo was terrific. Now the Giocondo: It is not elevated!!! You walk up a winding dirty staircase. I swear the photos all ready posted here are of the room we were in. Our room had a handicap shower. The rod was falling down, there was mold all over the seat and the window frame is moldy and rotting. The beds were not comfortable. The pillows are in desperate need of replacement. We had mosquitos galore on our last night there. The breakfast was as stated. Simple carbs...lots of bread. Processed cheese and salami. Coffee and tea were ok. Espresso on request. If you request water after breakfast...well open your little fridge and buy it. After the scheduled breakfast time there are no refreshments: water, lemon, coffee..etc. i have read this is a 3 star hotel, i ask on what planet? Also asked to pay tourist tax early as hotels have to pay everyday. And of course...cash please.
Whilst the hotel is in a great location; about 4 minutes from S.M.N train station and having the duomo about 2 minutes round the corner, This was really all that the hotel had going for it (Although the bed was nice and bed). After arriving we checked-in and were given out key and then informed there was no lift. We then discovered that our room was on the 4th floor, up 98 steps (We had counted) and so proceeded to lug our 20Kg suitcase up the stairs with no help, the staffed hadn't even offered. The room itself wasn't too bad, it was large and there was a big bed which was comfortable. There is a safe which can be used, however be aware there may be issues. Our safe decided to malfunction the night before we were due to check-out. The staff were going open up the safe but could not say when or how long it would take. We waited in our room until they managed to open it. Note that it took the staff numerous attempts to try to open it and numerous calls to the safe manufacturer. It should also be noted that the staff didn't manage to actually open the safe- it just suddenly decided to work again. The bathroom was a bit worse. Whilst everything worked fine water wise, the lighting situation was non-existent. The main overhead ceiling light did not work and out of the three lights over the sink only one worked. We had told the staff numerous times about this and after being told they would fix them all, they only managed to fix ONE of the two lights over the sink that weren't working. The breakfast was basic with pastries, cereal etc. There is a luggage room on the first floor which we were allowed to use. The WiFi wasn't free. You had to pay 5 Euros for your whole stay and, according to one of the staff members, wasn't very good either. Whilst the staff were friendly and pleasant and tried to help things, they couldn't seem to actually sort anything. All in all it was a basic hotel which has most things anyone needs for a stay, just try to negotiate a room lower down if you are taking luggage.
Central location with easy access to trains, museums, shopping and food. Lovely owner/manager. May not be modern, but charming. wi-fi available in lobby-better than nothing! For the price you cannot beat this. I stayed in a $250 a night hotel in Florence at the end of my stay and it was noisy and not as convenient!
The location is definitely the best part of this hotel, it sits on the road between the station and the Duomo so you can easily get to some of the sights in a few minutes! As two young backpackers we thought the hotel was value for money.. It was clean and functional. There wasn't free wifi, nor air conditioning (only a fan which is not enough in florentine summer!) or a particularly edible breakfast if you have masses of luggage this hotel is not for you because you will probably have to lug it up lots of stairs, luckily with backpacks for us this was less of an issue. The staff were helpful with directions when needed and generally friendly. Overall the hotel didn't affect the quality of our trip to Florence as we loved the city and had the best couple of days!
We really liked this hotel! It was cheap and cheerful, but the breakfast was simple and generously sized. The hotel was perfectly located and everyone working there spoke great english and were really helpful. We'd recommend it for a budget hotel!
