What a beautiful island and resort. From the moment you arrive till the moment you leave. Greeted by the locals on the beach (you arrive by transfer boat so wear jandles and shorts) with shell lei, cool flannel and a refreshing drink. We were shown to our room. We were beachfront villa 11. Perfect spot looking out onto the ocean from the room and bed. We were around the far end of the island so we were transformed by buggy. You just phoned up and within a couple of minutes the buggy was there to transport you back and forth to the main complex with restaurant, shop, pool, water spots etc. It was a flat easy walk if you preferred. Our villa featured our own pool, day bed, outdoor deck and furniture, outdoor shower, outdoor loungers, Mini bar, lounge area with sofa and comfy chair, desk area, wardrobes etc, double sinks, and bathroom all of exceptional standard. This was truly an exquisitely dressed villa with everything including linen etc of the best quality. The restaurant was lovely and views over the ocean, open deck areas too, or seating out by the pool area. The food was lovely and beautifully presented. We had prepaid for a "full board" with the travel agent and it was so worth it. We only had to pay for our drinks once arriving so it was such a breeze to budget for. Some of the wait staff are on 'Island time' but you soon learn how to work them. There were activities throughout the day if you choose to participate plus some nights there were shows. I did try the spa for a manicure one afternoon. This was disappointing as they clearly were unaware of my pre booking and then the manicure never set so was a total waste of my time. The setting is beautiful up in the 'treehouse' spa though. We hired life jackets to snorkel with as we snorkelled out in front of our villa. There were numerous water sports/activities etc to partake in or toys to hire. No kids allowed here. This is a truly beautiful place to holiday. We had stayed on the mainland for a week before coming out here. The water out here is just magical and although may seem a little more expensive than the mainland resorts this is definitely well worth the extra $. This is a place I would recommend to everybody. They are closing down for three months to extend the pool and redo the deck area. My it will be very exciting to see after they have finished that. 💜💜💜 this place.
Couples heaven. First you have the location which speaks for itself. The staff on this island actually make this something you will not find elsewhere. Vivacious and unconditional, Matamanoa is not only fun and friendly but whatever you want it to be. For me it was the staff, views, having breakfast included, snorkeling, cooking class, coconut husking, weaving, island walks, chess, music, dancing, my favourite dish crumbed coconut chicken and relaxing. The best snorkeling out of my 5 different island snorkeling experiences around the world. Special food nights are on Wednesday's and Sunday's so I recommend including these in your stay. These are just a few of the large array of activities, entertainment & facilities allows you to tailor your time how you wish. Most staff are from the nearby village so share knowledge and history. They brings a sense of family to the island which can't be put into words. Explore for yourself I know I will be returning.
Came here for a few days of r and r with the husband and enjoyed every day of it. Were greeted by singing staff on arrival with a refreshing juice and towel which is appreciated after the boat cruise out to the island. Recommend to stay in a villa if you can get it with your own pool, you will never really have a reason to leave it. Our villa was number 11 which was on the far side of the island but you can walk to the main reception and dining area in about 10 mins or take a buggy if you need. Villas numbered up 8 to 15 are on this side. That side of the island also has its own nice little beach. We were surprised to receive a complimentary champagne and fruit basket on the first day as well. Afternoon tea is available every day and if you do the snorkelling you may see some turtles. Food on offer was okay but the lovo dinner they do is the best. It is the closest to authentic Fijian lovo we have ever had in a hotel/resort. I also loved the Fijian style pancakes at breakfast. It is lovely to hear the staff sing songs whilst at dinner every night. Thanks Matamanoa for the stay, will not forget the place and your staff.
I decided upon Matamanoa Island for our big anniversary getaway mainly due to no kids. We arrived by helicopter and I have say we were completely underwhelmed by our welcome -there was nothing - only to get to the main bure - follow the path. Once we were at the Main Bure nothing - I know we arrived at 7.30am but still they knew we were arriving by helicopter after the midnight flight from Brisbane. So after about 30 minutes of us sitting around like turkeys - one of the staff members advised us we could go in for some breakfast and that check in would be completed at 9am???? Seriously reception cannot organise themselves for an early morning arrival??? Apart from that first issue of being ignored - we enjoyed the Bure with private lunge pool and beach view. The place was not full as we were there in is what is considered cyclone season. Our room was lovely and more than large enough and as we were celebrating a milestone anniversary we had our names on the door - which made it easy to work out which bure was ours. We didn't really participate in the daily activities as we could access snorkelling just off our section of beach. We would snorkelling 3 times a day and then just relax and enjoy the view. The reef has been damaged by Cyclone Winston but it is still good just not great. I would think about returning - as the resort was lovely and if receiving an upgrade in 2018 then it would be getting close to very good.
We loved staying on this beautiful island, it was so serene and relaxing. Our beachfront Bure (V1) was fabulous; clean, spacious and the best view for a sunset. We loved the day bed and our private plunge pool, it all felt very luxurious. The food at the restaurant was beautiful with different choices every night and the bar offered tasty cocktails. Breakfast and lunch choices were great too and the staff are so lovely and friendly. The most beautiful smiles you have ever seen. The grounds were always neatly raked every morning and every staff member you met was happy and welcomed you with a cheery "Bulla!" The snorkelling was fantastic as were the team at the dive centre. We loved meeting different people in the evenings around the bar, there were fun games most nights and the entertainment of staff singing every evening was spectacular. Matamanoa is a must for pure relaxation and romance. Vinaka!!!
This is the most amazing place to kick back and relax. We arrived by helicopter from the main island and checked into a beautiful bure. From that point forward the service was exemplary and the activities plentiful. It immediately felt like you were part of an island family.
Matamanoa island will give you those memories that you'll cherish forever. From the moment you land on the beach until the moment you leave, everything is just super special and wonderful. Upon arrival, staff are on the beach singing a welcome song and once inside, fresh juice and a cool towel to refresh before heading to your room. We stayed at in a villa and would highly recommend it. The plunge pool and day bed are perfect and we spent the majority of our time there. Unfortunately, a few things were missing from our room (spare blanket, laundry bag & forms, in-room dining menu, iron plug) but when you're relaxed and in such a beautiful environment, they were easy fixes and fairly insignificant. We arrived via boat (South Sea Cruises) and whilst the journey was quite windy and bumpy it was ok, but, it was annoying having to stop at islands on the way - especially waiting for other boats in front of us which set us back in our arrival time. If you are looking at Matamanoa for a special occasion (honeymoon/special birthday/anniversary) then I would suggest looking into catching the helicopter over. Meals on the island are tasty and serving sizes are generous. At 4pm there's a complimentary afternoon tea (tea/coffee/muffins) and around 5:30pm there are some nibbles at the bar (spring rolls/samosas). The lunch and breakfast menu is the same every day. Breakfast buffet includes toast/muffins/croissants and cereals, fruit and yoghurt, and cooked breakfast are ordered off of the menu (all included in our room rate). The menu for dinner changes every night and one of our nights there was a BBQ buffet. The buffet had a generous range including soup, fish, chicken, steak and salads/noodles/fried rice and an arrangement of desserts. The staff were more than happy for us to keep going up to get as much food as we liked. In the evening there's 'bula time' where special mentions are given to those couples who have just arrived and those who are leaving the next day. They sing their special welcome and farewell songs which are just beautiful. If you plan to visit during July, pack a jacket for the evenings as we had some cool winds. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will hopefully return again, vinaka to all the staff!
Views are spectacular, even in July (their winter) the weather was good for us, the food was decent enough, not remarkable in anyway, but is that why you go? Well in truth, it could have been better and should have been, but for three nights it didn't really matter to us. There are a lot of honeymoon couples - no real shock, but it's worth knowing it up front. Most of the visitors hail from a mix of Australia, China, NZ, Italy, some US and a few others. We both came away feeling like we truly enjoyed our visit, it was the highlight of our Fiji week, part of a two week trip to NZ and Fiji celebrating our many years together, but that we probably won't go back again. Been there, done that, liked it and it was good, very good but probably not a place that we feel driven to re-visit in a hurry...
We only saw glimpses of Matamanoa Island whilst we were on the South Sea Cruise ferry from Tokoriki Island . The ferry picked up some guests whom were staying at the resort . We were lucky to see the island from the open deck & watch the efficient staff off load the guests from a smaller boat onto the ferry. The island looked gorgeous but very small compared to Tokoriki Island.
The location is fantastic and our villa was superbly located on the back of the island. If you book then I would suggest asking for Villas 7-14 as they get all day sun, including the sunrise. The sunset rock and bridge are right there also. Peace and tranquillity here are second to none and the snorkeling around by sunset bridge was fantastic. The bar area, pool and restaurant are very tired and dated however they are upgrading in January - April 2014 (we googled). Unfortunately the food let us down time and time again. Not only was it 2-3 star quality, it was overpriced and 9 times out of ten came out differently than what was described. I had to send back three dishes which Is something I would not normally do but after three days of bad food I'd had enough. There was quite a few people around unhappy with the food. We didn't buy the food included package and I would strongly recommend that you don't either as we ended up skipping meals so that we weren't disappointed further. We have just arrived at another resort and had lunch which really put to bed how average it was. I hope they fix it as a friend that knew the resort said the food used to be excellent. To finish on a positive, it was the most relaxing place I have been too. Please fix the food for the next customers!! Especially the $18 salad bowl that is about $6 at best.
