Stayed here for four nights in mid-November. Beautiful secluded resort. We had an oceanfront Bure with private plunge pool. Very modern, comfortable and clean. First holiday for while where we could truly relax. It’s worth the extra money for an oceanfront Bure. Food was excellent. Free use of snorkelling equipment. Good coral and lots of fish on the house reef. They have a reading room, table tennis table, free 10 minute foot massage and a bar. Staff were friendly and helpful. My only criticism would be that smoking was allowed throughout the island. I don’t like breathing in other people’s carcinogenic pollution. Other resorts have designated smoking areas only so it is more comfortable for non-smokers.
I apologise in advance for the long review, but there is just so much to say about this little island. We just fell in love with this island resort and it's people. To put things into perspective we have previously stayed at Vomo, Likuliku, Tokoriki island resort, Malolo and Castaway island resort and the Denarau hotels. Matamanoa is not 5 star, but it doesn't pretend to be either, this island is a relaxed, understated, a barefoot beautiful island in paradise and you won't want to leave. We were welcomed very warmly by Ala and Caroline from the front office, with a refreshing drink and a run down on the island. They are so organised, welcoming and efficient, thank you ladies. Also Taka in reservations was so helpful and wonderful to communicate with, she was instrumental in helping me plan the perfect special birthday getaway for my husband. We stayed in a Bure on the sunset side B25, it is the last one up the end and has a different configuration to the other Bures it was really amazing and took our breath away when we walked in. We felt very blessed to be staying there, and we are sure the other bures are just as beautiful. It also has to be said that house keeping do an amazing job keeping the rooms pristine with fresh beautiful flowers during the day and at turn down every night. The island itself is stunning, and the staff are incredible and make you feel so welcome, just like family or an old friend. The new villas on the north side look beautiful with an equally stunning view out to other islands, and as they are a little more secluded and there aren't as many of them, this makes them a little bit more private. The restaurant was lovely with stunning views from every vantage point. Matamanoa do something special to previous island resorts we have stayed at, in that before meals they give you a refreshing hand towelette and at night they give every women either a hibiscus or frangipani to put behind the ear (very tropical) and these are really lovely touches that make them unique. Shu and Reve are the Matamano resident band members, and they are fantastic, they do such a great job entertaining everyone, they have an impressive repertoire of songs and are the loveliest guys. The food for the most part was very good and we really enjoyed it. We did full board so we didn't have to worry about how much meals were, and that allowed us to try a lot of different things on the menu. Breakfast was great every morning, loved eggs benedict and the omelettes. At lunch we particularly loved the kokoda, it was delicious and amongst other dinners the lamb curry was amazing. Rebecca, Adi and Sio were really lovely in the restaurant and bar but really all the staff are so beautiful. The day spa is in the most amazing setting perched high up on a rock face overlooking the the ocean you can't help but relax to the sounds of the waves. Deep Blue run the water sports department, they do a daily one hour snorkelling trip off the island. We were pleasantly surprised at the amount of colourful coral and the abundant fish life, we were very grateful to Mini, he was wonderful & enabled us to see a turtle up close. We also booked a private beach picnic through Emma and Trev at Deep Blue for a special occasion. Mini and Mess took us in a little resort boat only 15mins to a secluded island overlooking Monuriki (where castaway was filmed), we were dropped off with a phone in case for any reason we needed to contact the resort. We had 4 wonderful hours there, which included a delicious picnic lunch with beautiful food, bottled water and a bottle of French sparkling wine. The snorkelling off this beach is some of the best we have ever seen on a beach picnic, which we have previously done at a number of other Mamanuca island resorts. Put simply this was heaven and truly made it a very special occasion and we would do it again in a heart beat. Last but certainly not least, on the last evening we did a romantic beach dinner. Now this was truly amazing everything was so beautifully done, from the setting down on the beach, to the lighting, the special service and the food. Everything about this evening made it a very special night to remember. Things that you must do are: snorkel or dive, visit the day spa, private beach picnic, and romantic beach dinner. Thank you Matamanoa and the Matamanoa family, we look forward to revisiting you in the near future and look forwards to seeing what you have done after the renovations scheduled for next year.
Having 2 small children my husband and I were looking for a peaceful quiet and relaxing quick getaway and we are so glad Matamanoa Island was our choice! The peace, serenity and the staff was 10/10 We stayed in the Villas (No 12) and this was private and cozy which was just what we were looking for. Plunge pool was fantastic, stairs straight down to quiet beach. 5 minute walk to main restraunt and bar with room service available. Food was delicious, variety to choose from. Staff were impeccable. Always smiling and would always attend to any need or request. Guided snorkling trip was fantastic and Cloud9 trip is a must! We did the romantic beach dinner which was amazing. Day spa massage view is breathtaking and one of the best massages I have ever had. After dinner games were a highlight full of laughs and fun... We were sad to leave Matamanoa and its beautiful people but we will definately return one day in the future. Vinaka Matamano Island
My husband and I recently stayed at this amazing island resort to celebrate our 55th Anniversary. Matamanoa was the first leg of an extended trip that included Australia. We were so happy that this stay was the first leg of the trip! The ferry to the island, the beautiful waters and islands we passed...all was as a beautiful dream. When we cam in view of the resort, we were almost moved to tears! From the beginning of our stay, everything went without a hitch! Our room was beautiful, as is the setting of this resort, I was swimming in the ocean within an hour of landing, and marvelling at the clean, clear waters. We liked that this resort is adults only. It made our stay so very relaxing. The breakfast buffet is wonderful: so much great fruit, yogurt, excellent coffee and I loved the porridge, too. With a good breakfast, we did not need to eat again until dinner, and the dinners were so good and beautifully cooked. The staff of the Resort is first class all the way. We never experienced such warm and genuine service as we found here. Genuine is the key word. May that never change. We were able to swim every day, both in the pool and the ocean. We kayaked. We walked. We even just 'chilled', enjoying everying about the island. We also took the 'Village' trip, and found a wonderful world in the village we visited. Thank you, Matamanoa, for making our little visit so perfet!
My husband and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary and my husband's special milestone birthday at Matamanoa island this August. From the moment I set eyes on this island from our boat I was taken away with its sheer natural beauty. It truly is a beautiful paradise island with white sands, palm trees and clear blue waters! The welcome "Bula" song from the staff and Matamanoa's very own Fijian Warrior really make you feel welcome on this island! I also appreciated my welcome shell garland, the flower in my hair, my welcome fruit juice & refreshing towel! One of the staff receptionists gave us an introduction to the island which I found to be very informative. As we were celebrating our wedding anniversary we received a wooden plaque on the door to our garden room. We found it peculiar why our surnames (which had been spelt wrongly) were on the plaque when others had their first names on it. Although a nice touch, it would have been nice to get the spellings of our names correct. Our room was clean and and I enjoyed using the natural coconut toiletries our rooms had to offer. There are plenty of activities you can take advantage of whilst on the island like kayaking, snorkelling, swimming, tennis and table tennis! Before our holiday I was also under the impression you could paddleboard around the island but I didn't see any of these. On one of the days during our stay the rain was very bad so we made use of the board games Matamanoa had on offer as well as having a massage. Unfortunately there was not much room for all the guests to be under shelter whilst it was raining! My husband & I had gotten the spa package that offered 5 treatments between us. We opted for a sunrise massage, a sunset massage & I chose to have the papaya body scrub. Unfortunately due to adverse weather conditions we couldn't have our sunrise massage but we thoroughly enjoyed all the treatments we did have. The girls were very good and I particularly enjoyed the bamboo massage. I found some of the staff to be very friendly, always saying "Bula" to us as they passed us on the island. Unfortunately this was not the case for some of the female staff especially those that served us at mealtimes. A few members of staff looked like they didn't want to be there when taking our food orders/serving our dishes. I really feel that the customer service can be improved on for the waiting staff. Every night at dinner we would watch the staff participate in a show that comprised singing and dancing. Again some of the female staff did not look like they wanted to take part and made the show disappointing to watch. The male staff in particular were a bundle of joy to watch in the show, always giving their all! I loved the welcome song for the newcomers on the island and the goodbye song for those leaving the next day- it was a really nice touch at dinner! The food at Matamanoa was very hit and miss! My husband & I opted for full board. We enjoyed the steaks and pasta dishes but some of the other dishes were not palatable. Again this is an area that could be improved on. This island has so much potential! If the service matched the sheer beauty of this island it would be very hard to beat!
This was our second visit to Matamanoa Island and we have loved it so much we have already started planning for our return for next year. Our villa was lovely and we loved having our own plunge pool. What is so great about Matamanoa is that you can do as little as you want or participate in so many different activities. We love to interact with the staff so participated in as much as we could. Highlights were fan weaving with Chew, Coconut husking with Api and snorkelling with Mess. We stayed for 5 nights and did not have one bad meal, the chefs and kitchen staff all do such an amazing job. The risotto and the Lovo night were our favourite. We love the welcome and farewell song each night at dinner and thank you to the boys for the table serenade. Lastly the best thing about Matamanoa and the reason we will return is the fantastic staff. They are all so friendly and go out of their way to make your trip special. A big vinaka to Jonny, Sio, Chew (so funny) and all of the rest of the staff for making our trip such a memorable one. We can’t wait to return to our second home. Katie and Adam
I visited matamonoa island last year and after a great holiday decided to return a week or so ago. On arrival we encountered a problem with our booking which was not the fault of the staff on the island. Caroline and the general manager, Mela did not hesitate to sort out the problem and we were provided fantastic accomodation. Since our last visit there has been a change with the chef, the food was great with no complaints at all. The snorkeling was unbelievable straight out from your front door.. Trev, Emm and the boys run a great dive centre. Very helpful with the sailing cats. It would be my favourite destination and will return next year for my third visit. The staff on the island are very friendly and cannot do enough for u . Th e resort also offer romantic dinners on the beach. There is nothing else you could ask for. Congrats to management and the staff for making my holiday the best.
Let me start by saying that most of this review is based on a room that I booked, it was no fault of the hotel that I didn’t check my booking closely enough to realise we had booked a “resort room” rather than the beachfront bure I thought we had. So, taking that into account, I would say unless you can get beachfront Bure or Villa don’t book this hotel. The resort rooms are small, no view at all as your balcony is basically on the path that leads to the other rooms and we were actually directly looking at someone else’s front door and bathroom windows - not ideal if you want to sit on your balcony at any time! It also meant there was very little you could do to get any natural light into the room, and the view out of the back window was basically an unlandscaped “miscellaneous” area. We also didn’t get a wooden name plaque on our door, I though this was maybe to do with the room we had booked but saw them on other resort rooms so not too sure why we didn’t get one. Anyway, room aside, on to the resort itself. As others have mentioned there are signs of wear everywhere - paths are cracked and uneven, random patches of unlandscaped areas everywhere and, aside from by the water sports centre, there is no real beach access for anyone not in a beachfront room - entrance at the front of the hotel is just stones, a massive gap and then some wooden steps. Pool lounger cushions are pretty dirty and, even having stayed there for 5 days, I’m not entirely sure what the proper procedure to get clean beach towels was - we ended up going into reception to change them. The housekeeping was pretty poor, seems like all they did was make the bed as the surfaces weren’t wiped, we didn’t get toiletries topped up at all during our stay (despite having used up two of them) and twice our towels weren’t changed even though we left them on her floor in the shower. The service in the restaurant was extremely slow - I’m pretty patient but this was painful at times. Staff were always friendly when they eventually got to you but having to go and get menus, water glasses off other tables and swapping out cutlery as the places laid at the table hadn’t been cleaned properly wasn’t something I would expect to do at any hotel, let alone one like this. The food was hit and miss, sometimes nice, sometimes average and a couple of times completely stone cold. Also, most times there was something missing off the meal you got vs what you ordered. The good point about this hotel is the staff, they are always friendly and welcoming. Our experience was undoubtedly spoiled due to my own mistake with the room booking, however, even if we had got the beachfront room I don’t think I would go back to or recommend this resort.
We stayed at Matamanoa Island for 4 nights as part of our overall honeymoon trip in Fiji. We opted for the helicopter transfer from Nadi airport and so glad we did. It was a short 15 min flight with fantastic views. Worth the extra cost. I couldn’t believe my eyes as we approached the island. The scenery is something out of a travel magazine. We stayed in a bure up near the main complex so we only had to walk a few metres to the main area. Our Bure was well appointed and very spacious. We made good use of the private plunge pool especially at night when it was still very warm. The beach was good, nice soft sand and you can swim straight off it without any issues. The main pool is also amazing and the views from the sun deck are beautiful. We had breakfast and dinner included and just had to pay for lunch which was decently priced. The food was good. I enjoyed all my meals. However, remember you are not in the middle of a big city - you are on an island and there are limited fresh produce options so don’t expect 5 star dining. We didn’t find the drinks I really expensive. Remember the prices are in Fijian dollar so when you convert it back, it’s not too bad. We did the daily snorkeling trips around the island and saw many turtles. There are plenty of activities available both complimentary and at extra cost. It was also Fiji Day during our stay so we had special celebrations and the staff were just so happy and full of pride. The staff at Matamanoa are fantastic! They remember your name and your drink and can never do enough for you. Special mention to Silo, Seko and ADI who were just great and so friendly. Overall, it was my favourite part of our overall stay in Fiji.
This island was perfection in every way! Great food, staff and activities (if you want to partake). Loved the snorkeling that can be done off the beach or out on the boat tour. This was the most relaxing vacation I’ve ever had and will definitely return!
