We had a fantastic stay at Matamanoa Island Resort. The resort itself is beautiful , having been recently renovated. The staff are exceptionally friendly. And after a few days staying at neighbouring Sheraton Tokoriki for a wedding, it was refreshing to see reasonable meal prices again, about half the price of Tokoriki. We didn't have the best luck with the weather unfortunately so we weren't able to get any diving in, but I would definitely like to come back to this place in the future.
We stayed for 5 nights as part of our honeymoon in a beachfront bure. The room was tidy, spacious and clean and included a plunge pool, daybed and inside lounge area. From day one the staff introduced themselves to us and used our names. The restaurant at dinner was amazing - the quality of the food was very high and really surprising for us. The cocktails were made cold and delicious. The massages we had were fantastic and good value for the quality. The refurbished pool area and inside lounge was modern and very enticing to sit down and watch the day go by or play a game of chess. Activities run near the pool were fun and entertaining, excursions run by the dive shop were very well executed and varied each day. We loved getting to know the staff and joking with them daily. Management checked in with us to make sure all was okay. Being newly reopened a few things weren’t perfect; the pool wasn’t filled for our stay, there was some construction going on around the place and the spa had been temporarily relocated. But these small things mean bigger and better things are coming to Matamanoa and we can’t wait to come back and see how it has progressed. Vinaka to you all for making a huge and unexpected impact on our honeymoon. And to management, keep doing what you are doing, because it’s very close to perfect.
My partner and I stayed at this Resort for 5 nights and what bliss. We absolutely loved it and enjoyed the serenity, isolation, INTIMACY and water activities the Resort had to offer. It is adult only and perfectly accommodated what we were after. PROS: - Staff. In response to some negative reviews, please allow me to disagree with fellow travellers. The staff is extremely friendly, welcoming, funny and very interesting to talk to. I respect Fijians for constantly being so accommodating to everyone - it is extremely difficult when you have to deal with so many different nationalities, each to their own level of expectations. You are greeted with a welcoming song on the beach and additionally greeted again with the « Bula » song at 7:30pm during dinner. We thought this to be very touching and unique. You are also greeted farewell upon leaving the island. I’m not sure why some travellers think you are treated as a cattle - the island only offers two arrival times which are actually due to the cruise times, and obviously it is during these two times that all guests make their way to the entrance. - Atmosphere & Personal touch. would like to thank all the staff for being consistently friendly and amicable. I spoke to about 75% of all the locals - and trust me, Fijians are genuinely great people. I would like to thank everyone and in particular Adi for being such a sweetheart, Koli for representing his culture & traditional values, Harry for being the great singer he is every night & Joe - the big rugby/chef man. It is hard to not become attached to these people when you live on such a small island. Would like to apologise for not mentioning other hard working staff but have forgotten their names. - Island & Location. What a beautiful pearl. We walked around the island twice and it takes about 15min. It is a very romantic walk if you are traveling in a couple. The ocean view is obviously mind blowing from any point of the island. - Rooms. After staying at a different Resort on the main island - we thought the bungalow was very charming. Loved the ceiling. We opted for the ocean view room and loved our own mini pool and privacy. The bathroom is great and the hot water is limited - a good reminder that free water is something that should not always be granted. - Water Activities. Great snorkeling spots - we did them all. We even spotted baby sharks and sea turtles by just snorkeling outside of our bedroom (they are very harmless). We did the Castaway and Sacred Island trips. Castaway was fun, clear and warm water - the « Captain » and the other bloke who took us there (local Fijians) were extremely easy to get along with and outgoing. I think their names were Mess & Api (not 100% sure). Awesome mates, truly. The Sacred Island - was just amazing. Koli is a true legend. A pure local who showed us how rich the Fijian culture can be. Our favourite!!! - Restaurant. We loved it. We changed and tasted pretty much different meals every day. The fish is excellent. We were looking for a gateway experience and although some reviews mention that the menu à la carte is limited in choice - we actually enjoyed that aspect. It comes with the experience. CONS: The Resort deserves a solid 4.5/5 rating but Trip Advisor only lets you rate a 4 or 5. What we thought were missing from this splendid adventure: - Wifi. Wifi only works within the main area of the resort (main pool). Although looking for a pure gateway, we did need our phones here and there. Having no TV in the room was NOT a problem to us (as a FYI). - Beach. Very splendid but not maintained and cleaned regularly. It’s a bit of shame and also a good reminder about how pollution is becoming a problem worldwide. - Construction. If you visit / walk the island - some parts of the island are under construction and debris are a bit everywhere. Not a huge a problem as the resort is still developing - but slightly hinders the beauty. - Food/restaurant. Although we loved the restaurant it would have been amazing to have more local recipes on the menu for the extra authentic touch. Mostly westernised dishes. Also, I would recommend you bring along your own snacks as there is just the one restaurant on site and no room service. Not a huge issue for us. Many thanks for this grandiose experience- we will recommend this place to friends and family. Bungalow 34.
This adults only resort was wonderful. There was quite a spread of age groups from honeymooners to older folk. Wifi is only available in the bar/restaurant area which means that most people are looking at their phones and not conversing with each other a lot of the time. The socializing got better each night. We stayed in a Beachfront Villa which was very spacious with seating indoors, at an outside table under cover as well as day bed under cover next to the plunge pool. The pool is very small but fantastic for dipping in and out. There is an indoor and outdoor shower as well as double vanity. The food was very good quality and the staff were all very attentive. I would definitely stay again.
I discovered Matamanoa Island Resort in 2007, during our honeymoon trip in Fijis. We stayed there, after a cruise in the Yasawas and Mamanucas. Definitely fell in love with the place, the staff and the atmosphere. We came back again after a decade, and it still worth or even better. The coral was rich and colorful and it was still the case in Nov 2017. We could go for a snorkeling excursion, but really you could already enjoy the water wildlife in snorkeling around. This time booked a front beach bure with a pool and it is worth it: we enjoyed to step easily onto the beach whenever we wanted. I enjoyed the bure decoration and furniture: easy, clean, comfortable and nice. We did appreciate the gifts from the Staff (fruit basket, sparkling wine, among other presents). Regarding the food, everything was so good that I find it difficult to focus one single choice. Well, as we stay several days, it was easy to taste all that I was eager to taste. The preparation of the Crepe Suzette is a show ! And my husband did appreciate the show as well as the Crepe itself ! My partner is diving, so it was easy for him to organise with the club that is present. I specifically enjoyed the spa treatments.
The next time we visit will be our 5th time on Matamanoa and the experience just keeps on getting better. There has been some form of upgrade to the facilities on every occasion we have stayed and the inclusion of the plunge pools at the beach side Bures only served to improve what was already a superb place to stay. very much looking forward to our next visit - Kevin and Denise
We stayed here for 7 nights in a suite with plunge pool. The views are great and the island is quite quaint. The food is average but expected for a small island, price wise it was average for an island as I know they bring it over From Nadi. It was a little run down in places and could do with a freshen up. The staff were nice and friendly. The beach and water is amazing!
Absolutely gorgeous island, and fantastic service. Only small things I would say is that: They check you in one room at a time, so if you happen to arrive on a day when there's 7/8 people joining, if you are unlucky enough to be the last guest room you will be the last checked in (bonus though being that will likely the most secluded room!) Other item is the Sundays - they seem to do a Lovu which is the traditional method of cooking. We were quite excited to see this and try it out however were very surprised to receive the bill on checking out and discover that it was charged at an exorbitant amount compared to other meals through the week - there wasn't any advertised options, and if we'd known it was going to be that much we would definitely have asked about options, as my partner wasn't eating much due to the heat (she had two pieces of chicken and a roll for her main, plus some fruit for starter). So we found that the Sunday was our most expensive day on the island due to paying two high price dinners while we had survived on a lot less the rest of the time.
Everything was amazing. Everything. Views, service, food, bure (go for sunset side!). Total ambience. We went for our second honeymoon and it was incredibly romantic. Take a day trip out to snorkel the outer reefs. My husband also scuba dived for the first time and the team were professional and gave him the most amazing experience. Loved every minute of our 5 night stay.
Matamanoa was an absolutely amazing resort to stay at. I went with my family as my mom is a travel agent who sells tours here & wanted to check it out for herself- so we all came along. It is more of a couples resort than a place to be with family, but we still had an incredible time. The staff is extremely accommodating and they have plenty of activities and tours to do. There is nothing else on the island aside from the resort, which I thought would be a downside- but they take you on village tours, and island hopping tour to see other islands, snorkeling tours, diving tours etc. You can even hike to the top of the island for some incredible views. The one thing that really stood out to us was the staff. They are the friendliest people you will ever meet, and make the stay extra fun. I recommend participating in the daily activities they have for the day- even if it is just you and one other person. They do crab races, crab hunting, touch rugby, limbo, and many more activities. I highly recommend staying at this beautiful resort if you want a getaway that’s a bit more secluded. We did half our stay on the mainland, and half our stay at matamanoa. I absolutely adored the staff & think they made the stay as great as it was!
