We were received very friendly. The receptionist helped us orientate with the help of the city map when concluding that we were new in town. The room we got at the back of the house is of an excellent quality, peaceful and with comfort. We have done our walks around this location and found the restaurants in the neighborhood. Our destination, the museum Folkwang, is next door.
We attended the Pro-Wein Düsseldorf and booked the Hotel in Essen. Have to say they have really great rooms. The front desk employees even upgraded us to a nice corner room. Breakfast was very good with a large buffet selection. The hotel bar in the evening was the right place for the last drink. The employees are their key. Very friendly
Essen, a city in the Ruhr region (Ruhrpott), has a rich history steeped in coal mining and steel production. Located on Bismarckstrasse, the Mercure Hotel Plaza Essen is a contemporary hotel near the Museum Folkwang, which houses a major collection of 19th- and 20th-century artwork. The clean lines and open spaces in the hotel provide a quiet, relaxing atmosphere for guests. A 5-minute walk to the Philharmonie concert hall and the U-bahn Philharmonie station (Stadtbahnstation), this hotel is a good option for those who would like to attend a musical performance at the concert hall. For those who travel by car/own vehicle, this hotel has an underground parking garage. We stayed a night at this hotel on our first trip to Essen. Check-in was fast and efficient - the staff at the reception were friendly and professional. Happy to say that we had a good night's sleep here. We had a room with modern decor on the 4th floor of the hotel. As we walked along the corridor to the room, we were greeted by a lovely view of the surroundings. Although the windows of our room faced the road, the room was quiet. I was very glad that the hotel rooms have good soundproofing. The bed was comfortable - the firm mattress provided good support. Free wifi and the extra pillow in the room are appreciated. A plus point is that there were handy clothes hooks/pegs on the walls of the room. There is a mini fridge in the room but there are no coffee/tea making facilities. However, the La Plaza Lounge (hotel bar) is open in the evenings/nightly. Breakfast was not run-of-the-mill - their breakfast buffet spread lives up to the motto - 'Quality over quantity'. From rollmops (rolled pickled herring fillets) to goat cheese with honey and nuts, different mustard varieties and an excellent selection of condiments - the delicious spread was, for me, a special treat. The wide selection of German breads, cereals, ham, sausages, cheese and olives made the meal a perfect start to the day. The restaurant has comfortable seating and a nice ambience - the green, nature colours in the interior provide a pleasant atmosphere. Before we left, I bought a nice souvenir - an Essen breakfast board. Guten Appetit, Essen!* - an apt remark as 'Essen' means 'to eat' in German. Overall, we had a nice stay here and I hope to be able to visit Essen in the future.
I really enjoyed to stay in that beautiful room. I thing it is perfect although I did not try the breakfast and restaurant. the decoration and bath is quite good. And the minibar is fine. The view of the room is quite nice with a small balcony.
Stayed at this hotel when visiting Essen Motor Show. The staff, rooms and price was all very good. Only disadvantage was that the hotel did not have a restaurant, only bar. After a tiring day at the exhibition we would like some food to our room. But we found good restaurants close by. Will probably revisit.
We visited Essen for a convention. The location of this hotel is fantastic, close to the U bahn and 2/3 stops from the convention centre. Walking distance from decent restaurants. Rooms are brill, quiet, air con and v clean. There is a good bar (although food is limited) and the bar staff are lovely! So accommodating! I would recommend this hotel!
Stayed for 2 nights on a short break. The hotel is situated in a mixed area of offices and apartments about 10 minutes walk south of the city centre and main station. Had a large clean room on 4th floor fronting the main Bismarckstrase into the city, but road noise was not a problem. Comfortable room and bed although lack of facility to make a hot drink in the room was a bit disappointing. Good choice at breakfast at not unreasonable cost by hotel standards. Pleasant and efficient front desk staff with good English. Would stay again.
This hotel is located just outside the Center of the City of Essen in the vicinity of the exhibitions and forum center. The railwaystation is a 10' while the center can be reached after a 15' walk. Parking is possible in the underground at the hotel but the price rate is 18 EUR/night. There is also a swimming pool, available in the morning or in the evening. Lunch is possible but choice is limited to pizza. Breakfast is organised in buffet format with large choice. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and offer much comfort such as large bed and space.
This hotel is close to the Folk Museum (great art museum), close to small grocery stores and places to eat (walk over "the bridge"), and a short 10 minute walk to the train station. The hotel is set up mostly for business guests with a small bottle of water costing 4 Euros and breakfast being 21 Euros. I was paying for the visit myself so did not have the breakfast. I stayed 6 nights at the hotel and watched the cost of a room change depending on the day. Sunday night was the least expensive. There were no special benefits for staying so many days. The area is quiet. A swimming pool is shared with the retirement facility next door.
Nice play to stay for a night or two in Essen. Easy access to centre, and to the Messe area and companies in that part of town. The hotel bar has some basic dishes to offer - which are actually quite good - and there are many restaurants in the area. Room comfort is fine - the street running past the hotel is quite busy, so go for a room towards the back as I did (= I do not know if the rooms to the street are sound proofed). Will probably stay here again in the future.
