Nice play to stay for a night or two in Essen. Easy access to centre, and to the Messe area and companies in that part of town. The hotel bar has some basic dishes to offer - which are actually quite good - and there are many restaurants in the area. Room comfort is fine - the street running past the hotel is quite busy, so go for a room towards the back as I did (= I do not know if the rooms to the street are sound proofed). Will probably stay here again in the future.
This was the first time for me to stay there, and I chose it just because it is located next to the Museum Volkwang, which I should visit. So, I did not have a big expectation, and however, it was really a nice hotel, spacey, clean and quite room. Especially the breakfast was amazing! I usually do not take breakfast at the hotel, as I do not like buffet style, but at this hotel, the selection and quality of the food was really excellent. I hope I could come back sometime in a future!
Good business hotel Close to the exhibition centre and a lot of restaurants nearby The rooms are fine and breakfast is good Would always come back to this place The staff was friendly and supportive The city Essen is not a great deal but the exhibition centre is great
This hotel is an easy 15 minutes walk from the train station. Nice and clean very bright, staff were extremely helpful. Checked in using the Accor app and said i would be arriving in the town around 1pm, received a text at 145 to say my room was ready and I could collect the key at the front desk. The breakfast was very good lots of optiuions and a number of other options nearby. The room was spacious and clean the only thing i would have liked was a kettle.
My wife and I spent two nights at this hotel. The service was first class particularly the reception staff, the room was spacious and the place was clean and tidy. The breakfast was good; a selection of cold meats, cheese, breads and a hot section as well. The car parking was fine - plenty of space (unlike some older hotels) even for my large car. The hotel is 5 minutes walk from the main shopping area and less than 30 minutes walk to the Messe exhibition arena. There is a (underground) tram stop just a few minutes walk away that will take you directly into the Messe arena - it's just 3 or 4 stops away and very easy to use. And cleaner and nicer to use than the London underground. There is a street full of restaurants just a few minutes walk away. In summary: a nice hotel in a nice part of town and convenient for shopping and business.
For business reasons over the last 3 years I have stayed in Essen very often. As stated, I cannot exactly count how many nights I spent in this particular hotel but by my estimation it is more than 150. Whenever Mercure Plaza is available, it is always my first choice. The team (bartenders, reception, waiters, cleaners, management) is fantastic all round and extremely welcoming, the bar offers a good selection of drinks and food, the breakfast is top notch. I once stayed in the hotel on my birthday and a selection of fruit and chocolates was waiting for me in my room - a very nice gesture. There is good internet connection which is important for me - both the regular hotel connection and Telekom hotspot are available and stable. All rooms were renovated last year so they feel very modern and are always perfectly clean. The hotel is close to Ruettenscheid area with a large selection of restaurants, close to the central Rail Station and close to the Gruga Park which is nice for running/walking. As stated, sauna and swimming pool are only available during certain hours (early morning and after 6 pm) but that is not a problem for me. If I were to improve the excellent service further, I would try to put a gym somewhere on the premises and maybe expand the food menu a bit. Bottom line, 5 stars, one of my favourite hotels I've every visited and will certainly keep staying there.
Excellent customer service both over the phone and face-2-face - and Ercan, the bar-keeper is a show and entertainment, I can recommend a late-night drink (or two) at the bar. Modern hotel with nice interior design. Take the time to have breakfast, the choice is great and meets my two main criteria for 5-star breakfast: freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh fruit salad. In addition. different sorts of bread, muesli, etc. Overall, what is needed for a 5-star rating? A gym and/or clear info re the swimming pool: the latter has got reduced opening hours, is pretty small and both water and air temperature are too high. Btw, I have already booked myself into the hotel again to stay there in a couple of weeks.
I arrived at the hotel at 21:30 to be told that I did not have a booking and that the hotel was full. I was told in certain terms that I was wrong. Then it was explained that I did have a reservation, until 18:30 - at which time it was cancelled (and re-sold). I was told in certain terms that this was clear at time of booking, that I was a fool, and that I did not have a valid booking. THEN I SHOWED THE STAFF THE APP SHOWING A VALID, LIVE, (Green ticks) BOOKING. Conclusion - DONT BOOK ACCORD HOTELS ON THE APP: IT SAYS YOU HAVE A BOOKING BUT YOU DON'T.
Checked in late evening and was greeted with a warm welcome. Receptionist genuinely wanting to get your check in done promptly, and at the same time got a nice upgrade to their deluxe rooms. Dinner in the bar area was simple, elegant and bar man is excellent. Breakfast in the morning again with the staff clearly looking to make sure that you are being served. Overall excellent service, nice clean rooms, decent food.
We stayed at the impressive Mercure Hotel Plaza Essen just for one night, at the beginning of the month, for my wife’s professional reasons. We booked a non-smoking “privilege” room with courtyard view, as advised by other reviewers, to avoid street noise. The room was spacious and equipped in modern style. The bed was comfortable and we slept very well, without any disturbance or noise. The view to the courtyard is pleasant and there is enough natural lighting. In the bathroom everything was in order (which often is not the case). Our stay was very comfortable. I would like however to point out some remarks : • There was enough space in the room without any furniture, where another table or a desk would be very useful. • The artificial lighting of the room, very modern, is not however very functional. I am referring more particularly to the bed lamps, which offer a very unpleasant dazzling light. • The “no disturb” board to be put on the door, is still missing, despite the remarks of previous reviewers. The fact reduces the privacy of the client. A weak point of our stay I think it was the breakfast. Having stayed many times in Mercure Hotels I am very familiar with their breakfast. So, I was surprised not to find a variety of croissants, neither of cakes, neither of pastries (some pastries piled in a plate, probably leftovers, remained there as nobody touched them). I was expecting more, taking into account also the quite expensive price of 19 euros. I would like to make a special mention to the reception personnel. They are very friendly, polite and very helpful. They explained to us everything and answerd eagerly to all our questions. Consequently, it was a comfortable stay, but there is some room for improvement.
