Protea Hotel by Marriott Entebbe4.0 out of 5.0

Perfect place to stay in Entebbe. Very close to the airport without feeling like a basic standard ‘airport hotel’. The staff are very friendly and the food is good. You can dine inside the restaurant or better yet dine outside and catch the view of lake Victoria on a lovely sunny day. The pool is small but cozy and not too busy. A good mix of both locals and tourists. The rooms are decent (not up to 5 star status but definitely better than most hotels in Uganda). Easily the best Hotel in Entebbe and the room prices reflect this.
The pace is slow at this hotel but it is clean and the staff are almost all very nice. The decor was rather tired inside and in the rooms and the aircon was struggling. There is a very nice pool area and the views from rooms looking over the pool are lovely as you look out over Lake Victoria. It is 5-10 min from the airport but not very noisy as a result. Food average.
Entebbe is more of a stopover town than a destination. As such, clean and comfortable go a long way. For those in need of 1-2 nights of clean, comfortable and a great view (and willing to pay for it) this is your hotel. There is not a lot of Ugandan charm here but I doubt that is the hotel's raison d'etre. Rather, it is an airport hotel. For that purpose it is easily as nice as any airport hotel I have ever been in and it is much more convenient to the airport and NOT noisy with planes. Throw in the beautiful lake and beach and this may be the BEST airport hotel I have every seen.
For the prices charged, this hotel is not good value for money. It does have a couple of good points; it is close to the airport and the views over the lake are pleasant. The staff, too, are generally friendly. However for the price I would not expect the following. Truly bad food in the dinning room. I've eaten in a lot of hotels over the years and, honestly, this was one of the worst. An inedible steak and endlessly boiled vegetables. They gym is small and, somehow, no one thought of placing it with a lakeside view so it felt very enclosed. Checking out for an early flight was a challenge. I had phoned down early to say I didn't have small change (a common problem in Uganda) and they assured me it was fine. Of course it wasn't and they actually wanted to go out of the hotel to look for change, forcing me to use a card when I was checking out. They seemed unaware of their link to the SPG program. As others have mentioned, the noise from the club next door really doesn't help either. Will look elsewhere next time I am passing through.
After spending 2 weeks in the north of Uganda, spent the last evening at Protea Hotel. Wonderful, well maintained rooms, great, attentive staff, and beach front view of Lake Victoria. The hotel is just 2 minutes from the airport, the shuttle van drops you off right at the front door. There was no issues with noise and the renovations are complete and will done.
I stayed 3 nights at the Protea and the views were wonderful - from my room and from the dining area - with eating areas right on the waterfront. My room was large and spacious with a large bed, desk, side tables, chair ample cupboards and a balcony with a table and chairs. The snacks and drinks provided were not very nice - although there was water and tea/coffee. The bed was so comfortable. The shower area was large, but the overall bathroom was small. The sink and cupboard below the sink were shabby and need to be modernised. I had hot water on 2 mornings but I could not get hot water on one morning. The eating area is large with great views and the food variety is good. The bar area is small although the bar staff are very friendly and helpful. The reception staff were great and attentive at all hours. The music from the club next door was loud and distracting - which is a pity because for most of the time it was relaxing to stay at the hotel - there should be a noise level limit on lakeside venues because it detracted from the peace of the Protea.
The pros : very close to Entebbe airport (less than 10 minutes drive without traffic and without queue at security check point), nice and welcoming staff at reception. The cons : poorly maintained hotel, whether in public areas or inside the rooms. Floor tiles must be replaced as they are loose in many places. Food and service in restaurant was below average. Prices are higher than good hotels in Kampala.
I stayed here a few months ago and loved it and I decided to come back in September. The renovations are done and the lobby is lovely. But my overwhelming thought is TURN THE MUSIC OFF! I thought we would be able to spend the weekend enjoying the serenity and beauty of Lake Victoria- WRONG. It seems there are two clubs-one on each side of the hotel and they play music from Friday night until... well, it's Saturday evening around 6pm and the music has been on since I arrived back to the hotel around 3pm today. If you want to feel like you're at a club over the weekend, this is the place for you. If you're looking for quiet views of Lake Victoria, this is not the place for you. This is an expensive hotel. The staff are great. However, this hotel does not meet the standards of a luxury hotel charging over $200/night. The hotel is starting to cut corners on things that made it a well respected brand in Africa. For example, the toiletries offered are not consistent with a high end hotel. Protea/Marriott hotels used to provide Eartherapy soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion; it was a nice touch when you're paying so much for the hotel stay. Now the hotel has some generic brand for shampoo and lotion. There is a fridge in our room, but there is no mini bar. I'm not sure what were supposed to do with a fridge, if there is no microwave. The quality of the workmanship in the bathroom is poor: sloppy job on the cabinet under the sink in the bathroom (surprise- there is not cabinet, just doors and you can see the floor). I'm a bit disappointed this time. I'm not convinced this is hotel is offering good value for money.
We stayed here for 2 nights to recover from a long trip from Vancouver Canada. We chose it because we felt that Marriott would be reliable and we were disappointed. While the front desk staff were lovely, the service in the restaurant was poor and the food rather tasteless. But the biggest challenge was the state of the bathroom - we had a superior room which was large and quite nice but the bathroom was a disgrace. Poor tiles covered in mod, cabinetry that has been painted so many times it looks awful and overall poor maintenance. THey charge exorbitant prices and don't deliver - definitely not recommended. ( try the 2 Friends instead!!)
I booked at the Protea Hotel Entebbe and spoke to Caroline. The accommodation booking was a conventional booking but I was sending materials with a courier service that I needed to collect. Arranging this with Caroline was easy and incredibly professional. She sent me a confirmation email when the parcel was received and when I checked in there was an envelope waiting for me at reception with the parcel tags for collection. Fantastic service, thank you very much Caroline (in reservations)
