Protea Hotel by Marriott Entebbe4.0 out of 5.0

Stayed here during a recent business trip. The hotel is conveniently located near the Entebbe Airport. The room I received was nice with a view of Lake Victoria. Opening the sliding glass door in the early evening was nice as it seemed there was always a breeze coming in off the lake. The breakfast buffet was ok. The maid service didn't provide toiletries several of the days of my stay which was slightly annoying. When I went to exchange dollars for shilling the front desk wouldn't take any dollars older that 2009 - really frustrating since all the bills I had were in good shape. They said the bank would not accept older bills.
I liked location and especially the view, during day time- that’s awesome, you enjoy lake VICTORIA in such vicinity. Breakfast is good with wide selection fits for anyone. Interior and rooms are well and free high speed internet. Management is well trained and friendly. I will recommend to management to pay attention only to check out time, because 10:00 am is so early and unfair. In general- good place with reasonable price.
Stayed here for 7 days after travelling in 4 countries for 7 weeks. We needed a rest and we were treated to quiet nights. The breakfast buffet every morning was both a delight to see and eat. So much variety. Other foods and buffets were very tasty and appealing to the senses. Our room was very comfortable and we both enjoyed the balcony and the lake view. The pool was clean and refreshing. The staff was well trained and they seemed to even like their jobs. The management went out of their way to see that we enjoyed our stay. Only minor inconvenience was that sometimes the little flying aphid type bugs would come off the lake and be every where But the staff would soon get it cleaned up with much hard work. No worries though they don't bite. We would definitely stay here again. The really nice thing was that on our way to the airport our driver thanked us for coming there so that he had a job. Carried our bags and made sure we got to the right airport door.
The reviews on this hotel are very accurate. It’s not quite a 4 rating but you can’t give a 3.5 as in here. Very convenient for the airport, 2 minutes, and no noise problems. Room very good and facilities ok but ask for a room in the west wing away from the noisy music but that may only happen at a weekend when we were there. Dinner service was slow, lots of staff but can’t imagine that they have the best routine in the kitchen. Food was good. One suggestion for the management, please ensure your transfer staff know about dropping off on the elevated departures area, we had plenty of time so declined the baggage help offer only to find that there was a flights steps and no lift! All in all use this hotel for its convenience.
Was only here for one night but it was all it needed to be after a long flight - clean, secure, comfortable and welcoming. Thanks Cymon and we'll be back again! The breakfast buffet is a true feast as well, not to be missed!
Stayed in Uganda for about 3 days but 2 days were in Kampala and I stayed at the Protea for a night due to airport proximity! WHAT A VIEW!!! Pool looks ok but the main catch for me is the view of Lake Victoria which borders a number of East African countries..! Took a walk by the Lake at night and the sound of the waves and serenity made for such a great night..
This hotel is conveniently located approx. five minute drive from Entebbe International Airport and makes for a very good stopover point if having to overnight in Entebbe. The hotel is becoming a bit dated, but the rooms are clean and adequate. Security is very good and staff are accommodating. Due to an early flight, we did not experience the breakfast but we did eat dinner in the hotel restaurant and found it quite adequate. We stayed one night in early January and contrary to a couple of other recent reviews did not experience any issues with flies. In fact, we spent a couple of hours having drinks on our balcony overlooking Lake Victoria and enjoyed watching the large birds. I would recommend this hotel as a transfer point if overnighting in Entebbe, but if looking for a longer stay would consider looking elsewhere as there is very little to do within walking distance of the hotel.
We stayed here at the beginning and end of our Ugandan safari. Very spacious common areas - never felt that there were a lot of people here. Yes, there were Lake Flies, but not a problem, just interesting! Both nights, the dinners were fine - some things great, some things not so. Service could be a little slow, but always friendly. The range of food offered at the buffet was really good - they are obviously putting in a big effort to offer local dishes as well as Western and to keep the variety there. On our second night, one of the rooms we were in (which was next to a kitchen renovation, so some noise) had a toilet fail and non-working air-conditioning. After bringing it tho their attention, we were moved to next room without any issues. (As an aside, given that they were not full, I do wonder why they put us next to a renovation in the first place). Got a welcome bowl of nice peanuts and juice in our room on the first stay, but not on the second - maybe need to work on consistency. The location to the airport as well as the Lake make it a very convenient, easy place to stay.
We only intended to stay for one night but my son became ill and we had to stay for two. I was a bit surprised by the high security at the hotel including a metal detector at the entrance but once inside it was quite pleasant. The staff were friendly and helpful especially when we needed a doctor. The place seemed almost empty and when I sat by the pool in the afternoon there was only one other family there. When I woke up after our first night I opened the curtains and looked on the floor of the balcony. I saw what I initially thought was lots of blossoms but on closer inspection I realised that it was thousands of dead flies. That night I looked outside and saw thousands of flies attracted by the light on our balcony dropping to the floor and dying. It was quite scary at first and it made me realise why the waiter had stopped me from sitting outside in the evening when I went to get a drink. Apparently these flies only come out for about an hour and a half at night. I would hate to be caught up outside when it happens though. Location wise the hotel is perfect. No more than about five minutes drive from the airport.
We stayed at the Protea at the beginning and end of our week-long Ugandan safari due to its excellent proximity to the Entebbe airport and free airport shuttle service. The rooms are spacious, immaculately clean and very comfortable (some appear to have been very recently renovated) and include balconies overlooking Lake Victoria, however they are virtually unusable due to the enormous number of lake flies swarming the property. So long as you keep your windows and balcony doors closed, the rooms are excellent! The food, on the other hand, was very disappointing for a property that is part of the Marriott chain. The breakfast buffet was extensive and generally good, but lunch and dinner were lacking. The virtually all of the meat dishes were substantially overcooked and then slathered in the same BBQ-type sauce, no matter what dish we ordered. Pizzas and pastas were a bit more successful, but even then, only OK. For such a nice property, the food was a disappointment. The hotel restaurant, while very nice, also suffers from the same invasion by the lake flies so eating at the restaurant is a slightly unappealing experience as the flies appear to get into everything. Room service was preferable for us, merely to escape the flies!
