HISTORY Duncans Mills has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. It was originally known as "Sullenger's Sawmill" after its founder, Alexander Duncan, who established a sawmill there in the 1870s. The mill provided lumber for the growing communities of San Francisco and the surrounding area during the California Gold Rush.
In 1877, the town was officially named Duncans Mills in honor of its founder. The town thrived as a bustling hub for timber and agricultural industries, with several mills, a general store, a hotel, and other businesses catering to the local population and travelers passing through.
Duncans Mills played a significant role in the region's economy until the early 20th century when changes in transportation and industry led to a decline in its importance. However, the town managed to maintain its historic charm and picturesque setting, attracting tourists and preserving its heritage.
Today, Duncans Mills is a popular destination for visitors seeking a glimpse into California's past. The town boasts well-preserved historic buildings, including the Blue Heron Inn, the historic Duncans Mills General Store, and the Christopher Queen Galleries, which showcase local art and history. Additionally, Duncans Mills hosts annual events such as the Russian River Rodeo and the Civil War Days reenactment, further celebrating its colorful history and culture.
The cabin is heated and features a kitchen and a balcony, and there's space to spread out with a separate bedroom. Guests can expect to find free WiFi. Other standard amenities include a washing machine, a fireplace, and a coffee maker.

Monte Rio Magic
This was the sweetest, most magical little treehouse cottage. The attention to detail, cozy linens, and high end finishes make it the perfect place to retreat and rest. Megan was very helpful and easy to communicate with! Great proximity to hikes, restaurants, and the coast. We really loved breakfast at Cape Fear, and drove up the coast one night for dinner at Coast Kitchen which was totally worth the drive. I would love to stay here again. Thank you!

perfect retreat
The cottage is the perfect spot for some quality solo time - I used it for a writing retreat and it was ideal. I spent a week by the fire writing, did a puzzle, did some painting, made a lot of tea, and went on lots of walks (Islands in the Sea is a great hike!). The nights were cool but I was toasty - fantastic bed and heater when the fireplace was off. It would be nice to have a couple bits of instruction written down on how to turn the fireplace on (host provided via message) and how to work the heated bathroom floor; also, it is useful to know ahead of time that there is no freezer as part of the fridge. As others have noted, there are a lot of stairs - the first part without hand rails. However it didn't bother me, and being up high surrounds you with trees. I would definitely return!

Charming and cozy, but not practical
The cottage is adorable, but there needs to be more accountability on the website regarding the stairs. Megan told me there were about 30, but in reality, there were 51. I'm sure that young people have no problem with this, but older people like to get away also, and the description of the stairs should be on the website.

Beautiful spot. This may have been partially our fault for staying here.
Unfortunately, I was under the impression there was 15 steps. There were 64 steps to get to the cottage. Again, I could’ve been on my behalf I didn’t understand. But under amenities as a fireplace apparently the fireplace wasn’t working. It hasn’t been working for quite a long time. Parking set of carport actually just a gravel cut in the hillside space step are extremely difficult to get up because you have to go between them no bar and a tree approximately 24 inches and then up railroad ties halfway before you get to the wooden stairs with handles, the trees are overgrown and dropping fruit onto the steps, so anybody can roll their ankle or slip and fall.

Perfect oasis
I spent a few days in this lovely cottage and it could not have been more perfect - so close to the river and the ocean, with shade from the summer heat and a soft breeze off the water - I can’t believe how comfortable I was the whole time. I will be back!
