I pondered when booking this hotel, mainly because of the mixed reviews, im so glad i booked this one. The area is stunning yes there are some building works going on in laplad but nothing that wont disrupt you. It far exceeded my expectations of what Croatia would be like. Yes there are bits and pieces in the hotel that need doing but do your research and you wont pay more than you have too, I booked through love holidays and got 5 nights B&B for £340.The room was quite spacious, the bed is probaley a bit low but i had no problem sleeping like some have mentioned. The room was cleaned every day, my only real complaint was no safe in the room, but they have them in reception. The room does not have many plug points but they are behind the unit the tv is on. The breakfast is varied and theres plenty of choice so you would find something you like. The hotel has its own rocky beach or if you prefer walk down to the promenade where the main beach is.Theres plenty of bars and places to eat a short walk away, The main supermarket(tommy) is located behind the hotel Zagreb which you can pick up wraps, cakes, and has a deli type counter where you can pick pots of pasta, cooked food and salad for around 50 Kuna. theres also walking footpaths with stunning views around the area which will be shown on the map that the hotel gives you when you arrive. You can walk to port gruz to see the marina and where the cruise ships dock takes about half hour. The bus service is excellent stops right outside hotel and takes you to pile gate where everyone gets off ,to catch it back to the hotel just cross back over the road where you got off and it will say no 4 on the bus shelter. You can buy a Dubrovnik card from reception if you want one, The Wi-Fi worked in my room no problem. all in all i thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel for me it was definately the right location and i wouldnt hesitate to book this hotel again.
Booked this hotel as a late deal with TUI. Had a nice patio overlooking the garden and the sea. Was nice sitting on the patio chilling out. Bed comfortable and the room quite large.Food was ok, nothing special. One day the buffet was barely warm but the other nights were better. The only complaint I could have was that at breakfast the staff emptied the left over food into a washing up bowl, right in front of guests. Not good but can be easily rectified. It’s in a good position and the bus stop to main city is right outside the hotel and they run every 15 mins. Hotel is very clean and the staff are friendly.
This was my second visit to Hotel Splendid and I recommended it to my brother and his wife and we all really enjoyed our few days there. As before the staff were excellent and could not do enough to make our stay the best. Beginning with Romana, the front office manager, who is so friendly and made us so welcome that it started off our holiday on the best note. We had really nice rooms and our cases were carried to our rooms by Mario (who turned out to be one of 3 other Marios at the hotel!). There is one more at reception. We had lovely views of the sea from both the room and balcony. This hotel and the staff pride themselves on quality and service and it’s a very traditional hotel. Since my last visit in October they have put in large flat screen TVs and it makes a big difference. The restaurant was light and spacious and the food varied. Breakfast is very good and as we were all 3 half board we enjoyed the dinner each evening - preceding it with a good house wine at the bar before and during the meal! The restaurant manager (another Mario) spoke better English than most of us, as did the other staff (who no doubt spoke several other languages as well) and, along with Ivka, the chief waitress, looked after us in the restaurant extremely capably. It is so nice to be always greeted with a welcoming smile. Nothing was too much for them. Sleep quality was not bad. The bed was comfortable and had a mattress pad on top to make it a bit softer. Tap water is safe to drink. The weather was very pleasant in April and I will again return to this hotel sometime. Visitors to the Splendid know that the # 4 Libertas bus stops outside the hotel and takes approx 15 minutes to Pile Gate outside the city walls. It costs 15 kuna on the bus or 12 kuna if purchased in advanced. There is no lift in the hotel and there are shallow stairs up and down to the restaurant, the beach, the road etc. In fact Lapad area is hilly, though the beauty makes up for any inconvenience. If you have bad hips or knees, it could be a challenge. But the absolutely outstanding point of the hotel is it’s location. It is idyllic - with the view over the bay and the garden leading down to the sea. And it is situated in a quiet peaceful area. I have to say again, the staff at the Splendid are and added greatly to the pleasure of our holiday. All in all, we really enjoyed the hotel and I for one will be back. I’m sure the Manager realises he has a great staff.
I paid a really good price for this hotel. You get what you pay for. But it's the location which made it worth it! The hotel was based on a beachfront road with lots of other hotels. There was a very little beach right outside the hotel but if you walked the 3 minute walk down the beach you would get to sunshine beach which is a bit a bigger stoney beach. It has a beach bar right next to it and it looked like they were building another one the other side. Right near this beach there was a road with lots of different restaurants and bars. If you walk the other way past sunshine bar along the coast you can take a nice walk all the way to gruz port. Along this path you have restaurants, hotels and you will come across a load of stairs. Each one leads to a rocky sort of sitting spot where lots people would find one to sun bath, read and chill. Not only is the area near the hotel great, it also has really good links to old town. You can walk to the bus stop outside hotel uvala which is 2 minutes down the road. Get the number 4 for 15kn one way to old town! The hotel was pretty basic. The room decor could do with a make over, bed was low and not the most comfortable. It took us a while to find any plug sockets since there was only 2 and they were hidden behind the desk. We had a problem with the thing that holds the shower head up, coming unscrewed but it was fix within a day. The hotel had a bar and a restaurant which we ate in every morning for breakfast. The breakfast had a good selection including cereal, bread, meat, fruit. It also had a good selection of teas and coffees too. The hotel has a great location and I think is a great choice for someone who doesn't want to spend much and is going to spend more time taking in the sights.
As a solo female traveller it can be hard to find somewhere that is good value and comfortable. This hotel is a perfect fusion of both. I managed to get 2 nights half board for less than a lot of surrounding hotels charge for 1 night B&B. The location is sublime. Right on the water's edge with a view over the bay. As previous people have said, the bus stop is 2 mins walk away and takes you directly to the old city. Or you can walk and it'll take you about 45mins to an hour. Yes the hotel needs some updating but it's not a bother unless you inend on spending your entire time in your room. Staff are incredibly friendly, I didn't manage to get their names but a special shout out to the waitress in the restaurant and the man on reception. Lovely people. Breakfast is better than dinner at the hotel. Some of the dinner buffet can be luke warm but there is a good choice of dishes, even for someone who is gluten intolerant like myself. It's worth going for the half board option still if you're on a budget. All in all a comfortable place to stay and excellent if you need to look after the pennies.
This is a very late review as I was there in October but have been unable to put the review on earlier. Despite some poor reviews, I really enjoyed my few days there. The staff are multi-lingual and could not do enough to make my stay very good. I was greeted on arrival and my case carried to my room. I asked for, and was given, a room on the top floor (despite knowing I’d have to walk up) as I wanted lovely views of the sea. This hotel and the staff pride themselves on quality and service and it’s a very traditional hotel. But, Manager Sir, please upgrade the TVs. It really detracts from the rest of the room. The restaurant was light and spacious and the food varied. Breakfast was much better than dinner (in my opinio. I was half-board - but others may not feel the same.) The meals were buffet style but waiters were always at hand. Maybe 1 or 2 of the restaurant staff could have smiled a bit more, but they too must get fed up of guests now and again! Anica always had a lovely welcoming smile. The bed was reasonably comfortable (could have been better with a mattress pad on top to make it a bit softer) but sleep quality was not bad. There were no tea/coffee facilities in the room, which was a bit disappointing. But the tap water is safe to drink, The weather was very pleasant in October and I actually would have liked to go back at the end of November but sadly was told the hotel closes down between November and February so no chance there. The # 4 Libertas bus stops outside the hotel which takes approx 15-20 minutes to Pile Gate outside the city walls and costs 15 kuna on the bus or if tickets are purchased in advanced 12 kuna. There is NO lift in this hotel, and there are stairs everywhere - up and down to the restaurant, the beach, the road etc. In fact Lapad area is hilly (though the beauty makes up for any inconvenience). And it’s situated in a quiet peaceful area. I have to say again, the staff at the Splendid are superb and added greatly to the pleasure of my holiday. All in all, I really enjoyed the hotel and will go back.
This hotel is very jaded, in need of a makeover, in every area. The rooms were clean but curtains were off the rails in places, shower head fixing was broken & dirty, bedside lamp was broken, socket was not secure on the wall. Towels were changed most days but were very worn. We had to ask about everything, staff at reception didn't provide much information, none of them introduced themselves ! One suited man at reception, usually in the mornings, was rude to say the least and totally unhelpful. On our last day he told us we owed money for Tourist Tax. Not a problem, however, he was so rude, almost demanding and accusatory! Some of the staff were sweet but there was a definite lack of energy amongst the staff team...I wonder why! We paid for 1/2 board, big mistake. The buffet was sub standard to say the least, food wasn't very hot, it was tasteless, vegetables were boiled to oblivion, even the simplest of food, boiled eggs, were like bullets. We gave up and ate out after 4 days! Lots of people we talked in the hotel felt the same as us. The beach/sea area: piles of broken sun beds so there was nothing to sit on except the concrete or gravel beach. Nothing relaxing about it, which was a shame as the location is lovely. We went out and found other places on the bay to swim and relax! There was no atmosphere in the hotel, in the bar area the tv was on and background music! We went out every night, only having a night cap or a coffee before bed in the bar. Dubrovnik is a beautiful place, in fact it's breathtakingly beautiful, the area of Lapad where the hotel is situated is really lovely, there are great walks along the coast, the local buses provide a fantastic service, plenty of good places to eat( thank goodness), lots of really lovely places to stay but this hotel really lets the place down.
The Hotel Splendid is ideally situated near the beach and a short walk to a great range of bars and restaurants. There is a regular bus just outside to get you out and about. The hotel rooms although slightly dated are of a good size with sea view balconies. The rooms are clean and tidy, while the bathrooms cold do with an upgrade. The food in the Hotel restaurant is of a good standard and offers you an option of eating in after a busy day site seeing. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. Drinks are a bit more expensive than some other bars around. There is easy access to a beach area, which while a bit rocky is a great place to soak up the rays or have a refreshing dip. For the price a good hotel.
We stayed at the Hotel Splendid on the Lapad Peninsula near Dubrovnik for one week from 08/10/17. The hotel had a wonderful location on the sea front with pleasant green gardens with fir trees, cypresses, laurel trees and other shrubs and flowers providing seclusion and shade. We stayed in room 207 and enjoyed a sea view with fantastic sunsets. There were various terraces and areas to sit, drink, watch boats out at sea, enjoy the scenery and pass the time. Like much of Croatia’s coast, the hotel grounds descended on to a rocky and concreted platform and bay of turquoise sea. Here there were sunbeds for hire or one could pitch up with a beach towel, swim in the bay and enjoy the views of the Babin Kub peninsula opposite, the small islands out on the Adriatic and the evening sunsets. The hotel was far enough from the activity and noise of the relatively low key Lapad resort, but a 10 minute walk along a pebble shoreline or by pavement/road. The hotel does not have a lift or a swimming pool and there are a set of steep steps from the quiet road direct to the reception or a gentler entrance is gained via a sloping drive where there was a car park and wider more shallow steps. The Hotel Splendid like many in Croatia may have been built in the 1960’s or 1970’s and of a slightly uniform design, but the rooms and hotel were spacious, bed extremely comfy, spotlessly clean and the décor pleasant with the usual twin bed/double, bathroom with bath and shower over, plenty of storage, bedside cabinets, dressing table,TV, two chairs and fridge stocked with mini-bar. The balcony had a table and two chairs. The bed linen and towels were changed regular as requested. This may not be the ideal hotel for those looking for loud music, discos or those with reduced mobility or with pushchairs, but there was a cosmopolitan feel to the hotel with various nationalities and also with older residents and those with toddlers alike. This hotel is part of a chain and the use of some of the facilities, including the swimming pool, of the neighbouring hotel 5 minutes away at a small charge is possible. The hotel staff were multi-lingual and could not do enough to help and make your stay and holiday special. We were greeted on arrival and our cases carried to our room, it would be worth contacting them to ask for a ground floor room if with pushchairs or you have poor mobility. This hotel and the staff pride themselves on quality and service and it is a very traditional hotel. The hotel was advertised as a three star, but we would have given it four stars. The restaurant was light and spacious and the food was very varied with traditional Croatian dishes and other national cuisines. The meals were buffet style and self service, but waiters and waitresses provided drinks and cleared away plates. For evening meal usually there was a choice of 2 soups, 3 cold salad dishes, a full salad bar, vegetarian dish, 4 or 5 other main dishes and a selection of Croatian cake desserts, yoghurt, ice cream and a selection of fresh fruit (pineapple, plums, apples, bananas and satsumas). For breakfast there was a choice of cold meats and cheese, rolls & bread/toast, fried breakfast, cereals and muesli, selection of fresh fruit, yoghurt and hot and cold drinks. The weather was hot … in the 20 ‘s. It usually started to cool about 16.30-17.00 and could be slightly chilly in the evening. It has been known for the Croatian coast to experience strong breezes at this time of the year. There were plenty of sun bathers alone the rocky coast and bays and swimmers in the turquoise sea. The number 4 Libertas bus stops outside the hotel which takes approx 20 minutes to Pile Gate outside the city walls and cost 15 kuna on the bus or if tickets purchased in advanced 12 kuna. We understand it is a 30-40 minute walk from the Hotel Splendid to the Pile Gate. There are several well marked tarmac and well defined paths around the coastal Babin Kut peninsula to the pleasant Port and behind the Palace Hotel (5 minute walk further alone the road) a wooded path eventually leads to Dubrovnik city. We found it very accessible to see the local attractions in and around the Old City from the hotel. We would certainly stay at this hotel again and would recommend it to others. We thank you for sharing this beautiful part of your Country with us and to all the staff at the Hotel Splendid for their hospitality.
I wish I could give the Hotel Splendid a higher rating, because the staff are wonderful and do their very best to help. However, the rooms are tired, especially the bathrooms, and in urgent need of brightening up and modernising. The breakfast is fine - the usual international offering and plenty of it. We were given a ground floor room on arrival and it was awful - dark (because of so much overgrown greenery outside and poor lighting), small, dreary and with nowhere to hang towels, swimwear etc, just a patio with a low wall (not very secure, either). We complained but the hotel was full. We were moved to a first floor room after 48 hours which was at least light and bright, slightly bigger and had a small balcony with balustrade. NB anyone with even slight mobility issues: there is no lift in this hotel, and there are stairs everywhere - up and down to the restaurant, the beach, the road etc. In fact Lapad and the Dubrovnik area is very hilly (though very beautiful) and if you have sore hips or knees, it can be a challenge to get around. The hotel's main asset is its charming and helpful staff. That's why I feel bad complaining about it!
