Mercure Hotel Dortmund City3.0 out of 5.0

The hotel is located right in the city centre a 5 minute walk from the main square in the city and a few minutes longer to the trainstation. The hotel was very quiet of a night but if you are in a room close to the kitchen it gets quite loud of a morning when they are setting up breakfast. The hotel is very expensive and I didnt think it provided value for money but if you want to stay in Dortmund it is probably one of the better options.
I stayed two nights at this hotel for business reasons. The hotel is very closely situated to the city center of Dortmund. After less than 5 min. I stayed in the middle of restaurants and shopping venues. The hotel is absolutely clean and the staff very friendly and helpful. The room was quite big and the airconditioning was doing its job well (33 degrees outside). The breakfast buffet was breathtaking good! A wide and fresh range to choose of. To be really recommended to eat here. I would definitely stay again - also on private travels. Thanks for a very good service to the whole hotel team!
Situated on 3rd floor with lift access, parking nearby, checkin easy and access to rooms. Close to city centre with restaurants and bars easy walking distance. Rooms clean and well decorated tea/ coffee making facilities. Breakfast good.Easy check out.
Drab grey anonimous business hotel with no restaurant drinks in machine. Appaling entrance from street : you wait for the lift to reception in a sea of cigarette butts, stale smoke, dirty glass. Only 1 lift out of 2 works. Serously scary place. I would avoid at any cost. Oh, and you need to actually write a mail to the hotel justifying your business trip to avoid city tax. Mercure never the best , this is right at the bottom.
I've been staying at this hotel every April for the past 5 years or so while attending InterModellBau in Dortmund. Over this time, the hotel standard has remained high with friendly staff. At check in, I was remembered from previous stays and during my stay the manager asked me if my friends (who were arriving a few days later) had arrived OK. The staff all have a good level of English. The hotel is in the centre of the city with a U-bahn station outside the front door. The main railway station is only a 5 minute walk away. The hotel offers a good buffet breakfast which is slightly dear at €18, but breakfast is included in some room deals or can usually be ordered for €12 at time of booking. The hotel does not offer lunch or dinner, however there are a number of good restaurants within easy walking distance. I am already think of booking my stay for next year!
I booked this hotel through the Accor website, where as a gold card holder I am 'guaranteed the best price'. The price was very high and I assumed the facilities would be outstanding. I discovered later that the usual rate for this place is around EUR80 and at that rate this place would get a five star review, but I paid over FOUR times that much, on the night of a big football match. This is gouging of the worst kind and if you are going to quadruple your prices, the least you can do is put on more staff and your best smile. This is very central, very conveniently located for the railway station and the metro. The entrance is offputting and one lift (of two) temperamental but we eventually arrived at the third floor reception. There was no welcome, just a nod and a room key and instructions for using it. The room was clean but underwhelming, there was no restaurant or room service, a locked cupboard presumably indicated the presence of a minibar, and the one bottle of water in the room had a price tag of nearly 4 euros in a town where that will more or less buy you breakfast. There was a bright light permanently on outside the room, presumably as the small terrace outside was part of the fire escape route. I learned this late at night when trying and failing to find a switch. Judging from the floor plan on the back of the door, this was the worst room on the floor. Breakfast was quite good and served with a smile but two people looked right through me at reception as we left, so having paid in advance I left the key and went to the lift to leave. A quizzical look from one receptionist brought me back to inform me there was a city tax to be paid at the highest rate I have ever come across. Buyer beware, of course, but I never expected to be ripped off by my own preferred hotel group. There were none of the usual courtesies offered to a gold card member and tellingly they didn't send the standard email asking for feedback, so they must have known they weren't offering EUR350 value.
The hotel has a good and friendly service and quality is OK. There is a parking (payed, but that is no issue in my opinion) nearby. In my opinion the hotel offers a good stay in the dense center of Dortmund.
Hotel is very central right next to U Bahn Hotel is clean and tidy staff pleasant and helpful Transport from Airport - Airport Express Bus 8.5 Euros takes 20-30 mins 5 min walk from bus stop There are cheaper routes but you have to do a bit of changing
We stayed for a couple of nights at this centrally located hotel. The rooms were comfortable and clean, but the some of the reception staff could have been a little more welcoming and helpful. The breakfast selection was not vast but enough to start the day as it was included in the room price. The restaurant staff were very good. Eggs cooked to order if you ask. Excellent service here.
Arrived after dark, after some searching along the street found a small glass door that leads to 2 elevators to the reception on the 3rd floor. Felt very unsafe. An underwhelmed receptionist "greeted" me. Was on the 5th floor at the very end of a long corridor. Again, as a woman on my own I felt unsafe. The only reason for 2 star rating and not 1 was the cleanliness of the room and the efficiency of the breakfast staff. Cannot recommend this hotel.
