Hilton Darwin5.0 out of 5.0

The Hilton Darwin is in an excellent location but ask for a water view. We spent only two nights in the hotel but our view was that of another office building. The reception/lobby was very nice, clean and comfortable. The staff were very personable and responsive. The room offered was quiet, comfortable and with clean linen and towels. The free internet service was hit and miss. You had to log in each time that you used it and it was not available on the day we checked out. There are a number of restaurants/pubs in the immediate area and our traveling group elected to eat out each meal rather than in the hotel. I would characterize the hotel as being "efficient"...a good business hotel.
I've been traveling to Darwin for a number of years and opting to stay at the Hilton most times because of its location. But really, this hotel needs a wholesale upgrade if it wishes to remain relevant in the future. Whilst the lobby is fresh and the staff are always friendly, once you get into the hotel itself, it's abysmal. The decor on each floor is stuck in the 80s, with well worn brown carpet, unclean walls and an odor the just taps you on the shoulder and sneezes in your face. But that's not all the surprises, when you open your room, the brown just keeps on coming. Cabinetry in extremely poor condition, showers that struggle with water pressure, mini fridges that offer nothing but a similar stench to the hallway and curtains covered in dust. I do enjoy going to the gym when I'm away from home, but even the treadmills are worn out, dilapidated, with their TV signals now not working (this is not a new problem, they've been broken for at least 18 months) and substandard air conditioning that offers a similar climate to the humidity being experienced outside during the NT's wet season. The hotel's administration system never seems to change my address properly even though I've written it down countless times. And always order 2 room keys - a 50% hit rate is better than changing room keys after 1 day away at work. And my experience with dining in at the restaurant for breakfast was average at best. Long line ups to get a table, no table service, and the food was very average. Overall, for a Hilton Hotel, it's a really poor representative of their brand. Its location and friendly staff save it...just. But that will change with other overseas hotel chains looking to establish their presence in Darwin and by the waterfront. Lift your game, Hilton!!
Our check in process was very smooth with assistance from Josephine at the front desk. She even went the extra mile to highlight all the attractions to us on a city guide map and kept checking to see if we were alright everytime she saw us at the reception area during our stay. The check out was also very smooth and as it was very rainy weather, we borrowed complimentary umbrellas from the reception. The room itself was decent with 2 double beds. The bedding and towels are a bit old and have patches and can be improved. There is also a stench whenever we enter the room - it could do with an air freshener. Taxis to and from the airport cost us $30-$35 one way and it’s only a 15 minute drive. Smith street shopping mall and eateries are just around the corner. The Hanuman restaurant is a 10 minute walk. Coles and Woolworths are very close by. Mitchell street is very lively with many eateries and bars. The walk to the beach and the harbour only took us 5 minutes and we did the bicentennial park walk and stopped at Harriet park to play. Great and safe area overall for business and pleasure.
Centrally located in the downtown area there are plenty of shops, bars and eateries within walking distance. A quick cab ride will take you to seafront cafes etc. Hotel was clean and spacious but not over impressive either. Good range of choices at breakfast, even if the queue for the coffee machine was a tad slow! Be warned hotel is a base for cruise ships so can be overly busy at check out time or for breakfast if your stay coincides with a cruise !
Stayed for one night for work. Lobby and location are good. At check in, it appeared that they had young foreign tourist working there going through the motions. As a Hilton Honours member, I updated my address on the paper I hand to sign and was told that the breakfast would be $20 instead of $29. So...that made me happy! I used the gym and noted the tv was not connected and neither were the exercise machines. Also no clock on the wall. So i had to kill the time by looking out the window...which is always interesting in Darwin. But for a Hilton, you would assume these little things would be sorted out. Apparently not. Next morning, I had breakfast. For the cost of $29...wasn’t too impressed. There are other cafes nearby for cheaper and with better food and quality. At check out, I was told the invoice would be emailed to me. So when I received 4 emails for the same thing, I noticed I was charged $29 instead of $20 for the breakfast. And my address was not updated. So I guess the backpackers working there really do not do anything except take your money and look good. And to reply, You need to go through the Hilton.com website. You would think the actual hotel has an individual email instead of some corporate email centre in India or the Philippines. Would I stay here again? Maybe...there are other places which are better and cheaper. But overall, a bit disappointed.
I am fortunate enough to be a Gold Member with 'Hilton Honors' (HH) Great location in the hub of Darwin life. Room was spotless and bed and pillows very comfy. Desk was to work from was very helpful. Front office staff were not enthused. Said all the right words such as, "Thank you for being a gold member..." but felt like it was being read from a cue card. I was upgraded to next best available room per HH Gold Membership but was a little disappointed that I was not upgraded to or granted access to executive floor and lounge as I have at other Hilton Hotels. Building very tired and no balcony. Did not utilise restaurant, room service or pool so unable to comment. All in all, a lacklustre experience.
Not the high-end hotel I was expecting. Smelled moldy throughout and everything appeared kitschy and outdated, especially the foyer bar that inadequately catered to the number of people that were there. The room did have a comfy bed and a decent view, and the hotel is in a good location.
Not up to standard with other Hilton hotels I’ve stayed at. Not enough staff on duty and they always seem a little occupied. The staff that are there are friendly and try to help however, It just misses the mark with the detail that you expect from the Hilton. It’s seems like it’s sort of the cheap version of a real Hilton.
Stayed here three nights and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Their breakfasts were brilliant. We were offered an upgrade (you can haggle this a bit) for the stay to include full breakfast and drinks and nibbles in the early evening. If this suits then we found it well worthwhile.
Had reservations here and then out to KaKadu National Park. The floods came and I could not go to the Park so hunkered down here for five nights The hotel assisted in many ways trying to make contact with the Park lodging, which we found out was closed. No better way, I think, to judge a hotel than how they handle unscripted events. They passed all tests. . .suggestions on sightseeing, suggestions on dining. the breakfast service was good. Ate other meals off property with their recommendations. Also the small Lounge for elite guests was done well. . good wines, nice snacks. What stands out are the people and the quality of service.
