This hotel was booked for us as part of a sports tour, our group consisted of 21 children and 6 carers. We arrived late and the reception staff handled the registration quickly and easily. the food was plentiful and cooked well, loads of salad and a cooking station that did something different each day. The rooms were basic but clean, tidy and housekeeping came in every day. Nice pool and outside bar.
We remembered, on arrival, that we had stayed here a couple of years ago. First of all, we must rate the reception staff very highly. We had several problems during our stay and had first class service, over and above what would normally be expected. Thank you! We were immediately offered room changes (my husband, myself, daughter and granddaughter) when our original rooms were difficult for one of our party who has mobility problems. The hotel has ramps and an efficient lift for those who suffer in this way and on the whole, the resort is flat with dropped kerbs. The rooms are adequate for holiday use with good showers, hair drier and toiletries. Air conditioning is free of charge and the bedding and towels are changed regularly. The pool is not large but is well maintained and clean. We had no trouble getting sun beds and umbrellas but I should imagine it could become crowded at the height of season. There is also a hot tub (which was always working) and a lovely water area for children. A pool bar serves food and drinks during the day. The meals are served buffet style and whilst we all found something to eat (albeit rather limited for two vegetarians!), the food quality could be improved. However, there are many restaurants in the town if you choose to have the bed and breakfast option. The hotel is on the edge of Calella but a short walk takes you to the long shopping street which has a good variety of shops including supermarkets, chemists, bakers, snack bars and restaurants. The beach is about ten minutes walk away and is clean with places to eat and sunbeds......these were expensive to hire, we thought. The beach is not particularly suitable for children, having gritty sand and the beach falling away quite steeply into the sea. The one complaint we had was the "invasion" of students (about 16-18 years old) who stayed two nights. They took the hotel over with their bad manners and noise. There seemed no supervision at all! Luckily they were out all day and not around the hotel. All in all we had an enjoyable holiday in this attractive hotel. You can't please everyone but we generally thought we had a comfortable stay and would be happy to visit again.
A good welcome drink vouchers on our arrival (though it stated cocktail but only Sangria with no fruits was given) as well as a free water in our fridge & cleaning products. Great sealing fan & air con as well as all kitchen items/facilities. Bedroom good though no window. Great pools (especially for kids) & sunbathing area as well as the Jacuzzi. Bathroom with no fan & sink was blocked (it took us telling 3 times before this was fixed) & shower head semi/broken but ok & could be used fine - need to check all facilities work well & are not a hazard. Great show but a little too late & no announcement was given. Good 24h open reception. Good location & clean hotel in general. Recommended.
Calella is somewhere I've never been so I approached it with a little trepidation however I was so pleasantly surprised I thought I would tell you all :) May appears to be very early season so the resort is exceptionally quiet but that really added to its charm, lots of English voices round and about and a few French and Russian thrown into the mix. So the hotel: Very pleasant! Lovey pool area and children's splash park, all looks very new and clean and we were really impressed with the place. My room was a double booked for a single and it was really nice. Very modern, walk in shower with all modern fittings and a nice surprise of a soap and shampoo dispenser! Great for us as we travel hand luggage only. The air con in the room is more of an air circulator but it did a lovely job of cooking the room down 👍 Top tip - if you have one of the walk in showers, don't turn it right up as the drains are of the typical Spanish type and can't cope with lots of water! They flood everywhere lol We stayed half board so I beat mention the food; Breakfast is a great offering of lots of breads, fruit, meats, cheeses etc hot cooked eggs are available and a choice of cooked meats which changed daily. You can't go wrong with breakfast - it's the same offering worldwide! Evening Meal was slightly less exciting but still very acceptable given that the room price is extremely low and the meal may as well be free of charge! We had a different buffet every day ranging from chicken, veal, pork etc with lots and lots of choices - pasta, sauces, few vegetables, fish etc always plenty of salad and a nice selection of olives. Lots of deserts and fresh fruit was served at the end. The quality of the food could be improved I would say and that leads me to mark it down slightly. Lots of choice but they could improve their supplier I felt. Breakfast - 9/10 Evening Meal - 6/10 Special mention for the pool bar - lots of choice here for a lunch time snack and reasonable prices for drinks. Really big tick for me here, I'm gluten free and they actually offer a wheat free bread on the menu for an additional €1 ( I brought my own from the local supermarket and the barman was happy to make my sandwich in this but it was so nice to see and be actually considered for once!) Overall: Really great hotel and a very good location outside of the main hustle and bustle. There doesn't appear to be much going on in Calella - perhaps because of the time of year? It's a short walk to the main shopping street from the hotel but it's nice to come back to a quiet area to ensure a good 'quiet' nights sleep. Few issues with the food, i would however really recommend this hotel for a comfortable and dare I say luxury few nights away from the dreary weather in the UK.
Hotel ok. The room we was in slept 4, but it was a squeeze & there was a sofa bed with a pull out underneath which is ok for kids but not 4 grown adults. We paid for 4 but other than sleeping arrangements they only catered for 2! 2 chairs on balcony (& only 2 could fit) 2 chairs around the breakfast table ETC. Not slit ic room around the pool area & your bed are literally touching the persons next to you, staff were a mix of really helpful or totally miserable (which we told to smile) food ok. The best thing about being here we were local to the supermarkets so that was good for your cold drinks & snacks also the beach was 5 mins down the rd & that was fab. There's also a local train station that takes you into Barcelona (get a travel card) try & plan your trips beforehand as it can get quite confusing. Overall it's ok & cheap & cheerful.
I stayed here with big company (~25 adults). The hotel is nearby beach (about 8 min by walk) and the main avenue of shops and small restaurants. The hotel have a nice and comfortable rooms with balcony. Also have a free wifi. For breakfast you will get an English breakfast, a lot of fruits.
Very clean room, towels regularly changed. Hairdryer, shampoo and soap provided, so you don't need to take these with you. Lift worked. Staff friendly once you make the effort and start speaking to them. Always something to eat in restaurant with a different selection of food available, the staff were attentive but not overbearing. All staff were on hand for any queries and always with a smile. Pool area was very clean and Jacuzzi always operational. Hotel was situated in a central location - i felt. Train station is 5-10 minutes walk where you can jump on a train to Barcelona or Gerona etc.lovely places to visit. Shops within easy walking distance and cheaper than the little market which found a disappointing experience. After checkout there is a locked room where you can safely leave your cases and a weight machine, (1 euro). There is also a shower room provided, so you can have that last swim in the pool before leaving. Entertainment was provided in the hotel until the local festivities began. Take some old shorts and t-shirt to join in the colour festival. One negative, the rooms are thin and you can clearly hear people next door, although this was not a problem for my daughter and I, as we arrived mid-end September, we do appreciate noise may be an issue for families in the school holidays. Calella itself I found very clean and the people friendly. My daughter and I wanted to spend some time together and found this was the perfect place/hotel. As previously mentioned we arrived after the school holidays so the hotel was relatively quiet which we were thankful for. I imagine if this hotel was in an area such as Benidorm it's prices would double. Lastly we met a lovely couple from Liverpool, Jacqueline and her husband who gave me their email address which I have mislaid, hopefully if they review the hotel they will read this and get in touch!
I stayed here with my son for two nights. Purpose of this visit was the Iron Man event which took place on the 2nd of October. For the rate of €60 per day, we had a double bed room, with Airco. It was clean and spacious enough for the two of is. Included was breakfast and dinner. At arrival we had dinner straight away and it was not bad at all. Service was good and friendly. Many Iron Man athletes were staying in this hotel too, and they could certainly get enough pasta's in their system. Only negative point is that it was a bit far from the real center of Calella, but close to beach and railway station. Not a bad choice for the money!
Originally requested a twin apartment and somehow ended up witha double which was small and smelled like garlic. However, the next morning we were moved to a twin which was much cleaner (although did not meet my standards, it was acceptable). The apartment was only a studio so unsurprisingly was small, but was sufficient for our stay. The kitchen area consisted of a hob, a sink, a fridge and a microwave. There was a toaster and kettle in the cupboard. The room was facing the street so it was quite noisy each night, but the air conditioning and blackout curtains compensated for this. Additionally, there wasn't too much noise from the hotel it self. The pool was medium sized and very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful as well. In fact, they were probably the best thing about the place.
The GHT Balmes Hotel was celebrating it's 60th anniversary during our stay, which indicates it is not a modern state of the art hotel - it is however staffed by the nicest, friendliest and most helpful staff we have ever come across in many years of travelling. The room initially allocated to us (123) was directly above the beer cellar and the dreadful humming noise of the coolers meant that we didn't get any sleep on our first night. One visit to reception and we were moved to a much quieter room, no fuss, no drama, just a sincere apology and a very efficient and friendly service - so typical of every member of staff that we dealt with during our 10 day stay. The rooms are comfortable, well equiped and have all the amenities you could desire - tea and coffee making facilities, microwave, fridge, flat screen TV, air conditioning and a ceiling fan. The shower was very powerful with plenty of hot water and the towels were changed regularly. The hotel was very clean throughout, all the cleaning staff seemed to have a sense of pride in keeping the old hotel spotless! The pool area was adequate, the jacuzzi a particularly nice touch, food and drink at the pool bar were good value served by experienced, friendly staff. We stayed on a half board basis, I would recommend this hotel if they improved the quality, choice and temperature of their food - this is the one negative point of the hotel and could easily have spoilt our holiday. Fortunately we were able to eat out in Calella at very reasonable prices. GHT Balmes must improve their variety of food on offer at the evening meal, more importantly they must address how they keep the hot meals warm, without exception all the hot food was cold by the time you got it back to your table - totally unacceptable in this day and age, I know that I am reviewing a 3 Star hotel, but hot food should be hot! Overall a nice hotel - good accommodation, good facilities, excellent staff, terrible food - I might stay here again but only on a bed and breakfast basis until they sort out the food on offer!
