Nothing spectacular, simple rooms, location ehhh, not near most of the foreigner stuff (that's more towards the East gate of town where the Starbucks, night markets, and Mexican food restaurants are). Not bad though. Nice, clean, cheap restaurant in hotel, and the tour office next door is very helpful, but it's obviously cheaper to book things directly in town.
The Mercure was a disappointment! The location was good, a 10 minute ride to the night markets and not in a busy area at all, so no major night noise. The hotel itself was dated and worn and just old looking, with that musty smell that comes with age too. Certainly not what I expected for a 4 star hotel. For an extra 300 baht we were upgraded to a 'superior' room & got breakfast. The room was basic at best, the bathroom was old, tiles were grubby looking and the shower was mediocre, but clean. The beds were extremely comfortable, which was possibly the best thing about our stay! The pool was nice, nice lounging area, the changing area was dated and basic. Breakfast was average to less than average. Bread products were hard and often stale, pastries we unappealing and limited, croissants were 'not' they were hard, heavy pastry lumps! Flies around the open fruit, they did light small candles to prevent this. Same choices every day, the tea and coffee was disgusting, tea was so weak it tasted of nothing and the coffee was the opposite, too strong and bitter! The staff were efficient and helpful. Especially the trip coordinators, we booked a day trip to Chaing Rai and it was worth the money. We booked the night shuttle back from the local markets and it didn't turn up, so we had to make our own way! All in all an average, if somewhat disappointing stay at the Mercure.
We wanted a quiet place to recuperate and it was indeed quiet. The food is okay; the staff are very helpful. Service at the pool is lacking. The internet access was very difficult.
