Excellent value for money, and a free breakfast, I’m a Scotsman and really appreciate these small extras. The only complaint I had was that they did not serve noodles and haggis for breakfast. Which does bring me to one annoyance I have about some other people’s comments “hardly anyone in the hotel spoke English” when the Chinese go to London how many hotel staff speak Chinese! Just a pet annoyance. The location of the hotel is great, the staff were great no problems with communication. Shops, The Walking Street and around 100,000 restaurants were all between 0 and 15 minutes walking distance. And after 7 days of great Chinese food and you just feel like a burger or a Starbucks they are just across the road. I did however find Pacific Coffee in the R&F Mall to be very good for me a wee bit better than Buckystars. Carrefour for those who know is 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel and a great food area too but where is not. The Line 1 Metro Luomashi is 10 minutes’ walk and cheap, some of the direct destinations from the station: Nijiaqiao – 2 Irish Bars The Shamrock and McIlroy’s – 4rmb – I just realised that I put this first on my list? Jincheng Plaza - New Century Global Centre – 6rmb - the world's largest building measured by floor space - devoted to shopping. It also houses offices, conference rooms, a university complex, two commercial centres, hotels, an IMAX cinema, a "Mediterranean village", a pirate ship and skating rink. The centrepiece of the building is a water park. It quite big! – 6rmb Tongzilin – Citi Bank and HSBC - 4rmb Wenshu Monastery – This a good one – a good 2-3 hour touristy visit to a monastery and gardens all for – 2rmb ($0.30) well worth the visit I’m Scots I know about these things…however when you go back to the hotel do not go through R&F Mall because then your partner goes into C&A and buys a nice blouse for 200rmb, so much for saving money on that trip. Wide and Narrow Alley – Old Chinese Shopping Area but many nice buildings and food shops - 2rmb There is lots more, but you can explore on your own. Pandas are only a 25 minute taxi ride, you don’t need a fancy tour, unless that’s what you want. Oh, the rooms were standard like the photos, clean, maids were helpful a little extra coffee was nice, so you could have a coffee before you went out and coffee when you came back. Breakfast was good although similar every day but mix it up try the fresh noodles some days, runny egg on toast the next day, go Asian, go Western, go Fusion, the pork steam buns were great, they even had porridge although you may have to add salt or sugar whichever is your persuasion. You could also do you your own full laundry for 15 rmb and iron yourself after. I think that's all for now.
I stayed here for 3 nights with my family. The rooms are very good, and a good size. All very clean. The location is very good, a 10 minute walk from the main shopping area and lots of eating places nearby. A hotpot restaurant just over the road. The breakfast is good, some western as well as Asian choices. The coffee is good. Some of the food isn't very hot. The staff spoke good English and were very helpful.
Hotel is located in a residential area. Three blocks to metro, one and half blocks to bus station.I took public transportation everyday during my four days trip. I stayed at 19th floor. Room is big and quiet. Bed is very comfortable. Service is excellent. There was a welcome fruit plate when we arrived. Front desk not just remembered my name, they also remembered my birthday. They were so sweet to send a gift to my room on my birthday. I love their breakfast. They offered both Chinese and Western style hot and cold breakfast. Chinese style breakfast is my go-to every morning. They freshly made different dishes every morning. You get to try some traditional local food. For coffee lover, their coffee machine makes excellent espresso. By the way, their restaurant opens for dinner. They have English menu.
Stayed here for 2 nights since it is close to a conference I was attending. I was upgraded to a suite which has a great size and is very clean. Also the hotel is very much reasonably priced, and exceeded my expectation. Did not interact too much with staff so not clear on the service though.
We enjoyed our stay here. The staff is friendly & spoke English. Our room was modern, clean & had all we needed. Set in the heart of downtown Chengdu, all you need is walking distance away, even the subway.
We were on the 12th floor. Excellent room. The frosted glass brick wall was a bit awkward for myself and my friend. Was not ideal if someone went to the toilet in the middle of the night and turned on the light. Close to everything eg the main square, shopping, metro, but far enough so that we weren't bothered by traffic noise. Only a couple of receptionists spoke English so made communication a bit difficult if they were not working. Needed them to translate for us when we wanted more towels from housekeeping. There is a small tour office but the guy who works there speaks zero English, the lady speaks some English and tried her best with a translation app.
Nice hotel, friendly staff, clean rooms, convenient location and lots restaurants around. Requested connecting rooms and hotel arranged accordingly, rooms were large and well cleaned, however, there was no fridge in the room, which was kind of odd and disappointed ...since I like cold drinks very much. Not close to any Subway station, several buses stop nearby, lots of rental bikes. There were many Sichuan cuisine restaurants in the neighborhood, cheap, in good quantity and delicious...You should try some.
I've never really liked Holiday Inn properties, but since discovering the HI "Express" brand for the first time in China, I'm growing to like them very much. It's a very high end experience for relatively low rates. Considering I've stayed at Chinese branded hotels in Chengdu before that were rated 4* but were little more than 2* experiences, I'm relieved that the HI Express delivers over and above what I expected. This property is very close to the heart of Chengdu and in easy reach of all the main sights. It's walking distance to the Red Line 2 metro station Taisheng Road, where you can easily connect to the main railway stations and airport (Exit D is the closest to the hotel). There's lots to do around the property, including some really good street food and some higher end eateries. The hotel is modern and efficient, with staff who speak excellent English and are friendly. They have slow elevators, but that's a minor worry. The rooms are spotlessly clean, modern, stylish and well equipped. There's excellent free WIFI, as well as tea, coffee, bottled water, kettle, safe and international TV. The beds are comfortable and the linens spotlessly clean. There's a very spacious bathroom, with massive walk in shower, great hot water pressure, all necessary amenities and spotlessly clean towels. There's also self service laundry on site if you buy tokens from the desk for just RMB15 per washer/dryer. Very inexpensive. Breakfast is included and covers both Chinese and western tastes, although they could do with investing in a few more coffee machines than just the one (slow) operation they have now. Again, it's a minor point. This is my 3rd HI Express stay in China in 3 different cities and the experience has been great so far, other than huge breakfast issues in Hefei. I've forgiven them that :)
Good find for a hotel! Pretty clean, decent breakfast and a good price. The location was good (Chengdu is huge!), and English wasn’t a problem for the most part. I felt very comfortable here and would recommend.
It's a relief when you come across English speaking staff in China and at the Holiday Inn Gulou, Chengdu, most of the front office can speak good English. A special mention to the Front Office Manager - Melody Zhao, who went out of her way to make my stay comfortable. She was always available on hand to help me with any queries or directions. The rooms are very spacious and clean, with good view of the streets. The breakfast has a wide choice of both continental and chinese options. The buffet opens by 6.30am which is good, especially if you have an early day tour. The hotel is 15 mins walking distance from Tianfu Square and 5 mins from a subway station. Overall, the stay experience was a pleasurable one!
