Fly to Matsuyama
Located in a lush river basin on the island of Shikoku, Matsuyama is home to important museums, heritage architecture and public gardens, such as the Ninomaru Historical Garden. The city s famous streetcar system operates replicas of the diminutive Botchan Ressha locomotives mentioned in the celebrated 1906 novel Botchan by Natsume Soseki, who lived and worked in the city. The Botchan Gizmo Clock situated at the entrance to the city s shopping arcade features animatronics that depict scenes from the book.
Attractions
Built in 1603, Matsuyama Castle is an iconic symbol of the city. The Dogo Onsen Honkan is believed to be the oldest public bathhouse in Japan. Matsuyama is also home to eight of the 88 Temples, a famous pilgrimage route, including the Ishite-ji Temple. Another important religious site is the Isaniwa Shrine. Matsuyama hosts museums and memorials dedicated to fine art, military heroes and the area s cultural history.
Hints and tips
Matsuyama Airport (MYJ) is located 3 miles southwest of the city. Matsuyama-shi Station is the hub for local trains, trams and buses. Visitors who fly to Matsuyama find a humid, subtropical climate that produces hot summers and cool winters. While summer highs reach the mid-80s, winter lows in Matsuyama hover just above freezing. Annual cultural celebrations include the Dogo Festival, the Matsuyama Festival and the Fall Festival.
