Altoona is a historic rail hub located in central Pennsylvania at the foot of Brush Mountain. The city features heritage architecture, cultural museums and a variety of recreational activities, including the chance to attend home games for the minor league Altoona Curves at the Peoples Natural Gas Field. Lakemont Park, one of Altoona s many urban parks, is the setting for Leap-The-Dips, the oldest continually operating side-friction wooden roller coaster.
City landmarks include the Megahan House, the turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts-style Mishler Theatre and the Baroque Revival Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament with its statuary display and stained glass windows. You can also experience the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum and the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site. The Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark features a special set of tracks that enable trains to scale the surrounding Allegheny Mountains where majestic geological formations await visitors in the nearby Indian and Lincoln Caverns.
In addition to the Amtrak train service and Interstate 99, you can access the city through the Altoona-Blair County Airport (AOO), which is located 14 miles south of the city. Altoona s humid continental climate produces warm, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. While summer highs can reach the upper 90s, winter lows dip well below freezing. When you fly to Altoona, you can enjoy performances by the Altoona Community Theater and Symphony Orchestra.
