How anyone take a the time to have a dig at this place, dish out minimal stars and have a go is beyond me. If you have the time to sit down and right and a scathing review about a plucky little gaff doing it's best to cater for tiny budgets them you need a hobby. What more do these people want? This place is clean, local and utterly cheap. I dealt with a fella on email and a woman in person and they were marvellous. If you are taking the extended family on a tour of the Valleys or honeymooning then this is not the place for you. But if you need to get your nut down in Cardiff on a beggars budget then this place is heaven
Visited this hotel last week. Unf we had to leave as the stairs were too much. We were on the 5th floor and had to walk up 8 long steep flights of stairs to get to our room. The website does say there are stairs but i think it should be made a lot clearer that it is not at all suitable for disabled people or people who are not in good health. The room itself was clean and tidy. We spoke to the staff who were lovely and refunded us for the room. Hence my 4 star review as the staff were fab and i couldn't fault the room at all. The location of the hotel was great. It was a bit noisy due to there being a lot of young groups staying there so would not recommend it if you want quiet Overall good value for money
Hotel was as expected towels & sheets were spotless, great location and Sandringham hotel serves a good breakfast. My main concern was the state of the carpets I can see them being sued as they are threadbare & dangerous. They should also invest in new mattresses. The stairs are steep and thank fog we were in room 4 with 3 flights of stairs and not room 9 in the gods. I would still recommend as you get what you pay for.
On arrival, the hall way smells funny! Stairs are steep and need re-carpeting, lighting needs to be better. Room was big, but dirty with bogies on the walls, again needs a new carpet. Close to clubs and pubs and shops. Very noisy at night and early hours,so wouldn't recommend it for families. Also has views of tramps selling drugs! So didn't always feel safe!
What a let down. Very run down and in need of a complete overhaul. On entering ML Lodge there was an immediate odour - not sure what it was. So may things wrong - bad mattress, bathroom taps timed out like those in public toilets, shower had the temperature set to luke warm, could not shut window, green exit sign lit up our room through the night, stains all over the walls, light came on at night to go up stairs but not to go down, bedside light not working.....the list goes on. Beware of this place - although in downtown Cardiff I would next time stay one or two blocks away so to avoid having to step over people sleeping in the Lodge entry. Far from adequate for price paid. Backpackers would be a better option.
If the appearance of a hotel is as important to you as comfort and cleanliness, this is not the place for you. Everything looks tired and worn out, with dents and scratches etc everywhere. Check-in is at the Sandringham Hotel, which is on the other side of the road, going back slightly towards the station. Nice lady checked me in. Ensure you have £20 on you, as you need to pay a cash-deposit for your key, which is refunded on check-out. A fob taped to the label of your room-key lets you through the front door. Now I knew there was no lift, but I had underestimated how steep the staircases were - I was on the third floor, and completely out of breath, carrying one small holdall. The carpet on the stairs is threadbare and scruffy, as is the rest of the decor - not a great welcome to any guest coming in. I was in room 6 - a spacious room with a double bed with bedside tables, desk and stool, full length-mirror, cupboard with iron and ironing board and extra duvet, tv, kettle with tea and coffee etc, a desktop fan, and a spacious bathroom with shower, sink and toilet, and two hand- and two bathtowels, and basic toiletries. When I initially entered the room, I was not too impressed - again, the decor and furniture looked tired and worn out. But then I realised the place was spotlessly clean! And the bed very comfortable. The room did have a bit of an odd smell - it didn't irritate me as such, more that I couldn't put my finger on what the smell was. I always carry some lavender roomspray when staying in hotels, so it was swiftly gotten rid of. The window could also be pushed up fully, so that helped too. I had a good night's sleep, and despite its location in the centre of Cardiff in a road lined with pubs, bars, restaurants and clubs, it was surprisingly quiet! It is also within 10 minutes' walk from the central station. Check-out was fine, got my £20 back, and could leave my bag at the Sandringham whilst I went shopping. Please note - ML Lodge is not owned by the same people as the Sandringham. The owners of ML Lodge pay the Sandringham to use their reception-facilities. Reception is open 24 hours. And again, no lift to reception. ML Lodge is right in the centre of Cardiff, near the Castle. So it is in a perfect location for nightlife, shopping and sightseeing. Cardiff has an excellent selection of shops. If you just want a clean and comfortable place to sleep, and are not fussed about decor or lifts, this is a great budget-place!
Using a chip sellotaped to the back of the metal number 8 keyring - connected to small and rather unexciting key - we buzzed our way through the lonely metal and glass door. We stepped into stale air, that hung heavily with tobacco. The red carpeted stairs were worn, threadbare patches greeted us as we considered the daunting task of taking our luggage up them. Resigning our selves to it eventually, we began our ascent. The stairs turned back on themselves repeatedly, twisting again and again as we continued up to our room. Chipped paint, ripped carpet and the stale whiff in the air continued until finally... we reached our room at the very top. Sighs of relief turned quickly into sceptical ones as we considered the space we were to spend the next two nights in. It was bare, white walls bled into an unappealing brown carpet. The white sheets were clean. The wooden furniture cheap and chipped. The bathroom had the red floor you'd find in an old leisure centre and the presence of a drain in front of the toilet continued the theme of one. Black mould grew unhindered in the shower and the toilet flush was rather temperamental. Being our room was an attic one, I had to bend almost double to get round to my side of the bed, due to the ceiling slopping sharply into the room. The tea and coffee facilities were... present but, for lack of a better word, disgusting. Resigning ourselves to the fact we had paid £135 for a barely adequate room, we headed out to the city - which was (thankfully) only just outside the front door.
Have seen a lot of bad reviews regarding this place but I found it absolutely fine. Yes there are a lot of stairs, but the website warns you of this. Yes you have to check in across the road, again website tells you this. Yes the stair carpets really do need replacing but the room was very clean and the bed very comfy. There was a slightly odd smell when I first arrived but that was soon rectified by a blast of air freshener and I didn't have a problem the rest of my stay. For what I paid for a room slap bang in the middle of a capital city I would say that I was charged a fair price and would certainly stay here again
Plenty of people moaning on here but if your on a stag or hen it's perfect. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough for what we needed. Yes the stairs are a pain but honestly, it's just stairs. We stayed on the top floor so plenty of climbing but after a few too many beers I can't even remember getting up them. It is noisy as right in the centre but again beer seemed to help with that too. It's close to all bars clubs and the principality stadium. You really do get what you pay for
I looked at the reviews on line and I thought I'd still give it a try. And to be honest I'm glad I did as the room I got was ok. Was very clean and I was placed at the back. Yes the stairs are a killer lol all in all I'd stay again
