Enjoy a leisurely hike along the canyon rim, backpack overnight if you’re feeling adventurous, or take a multi-day whitewater boat trip down the Colorado River.

Sunset Crater

The natural attractions near Flagstaff don’t end with the Grand Canyon. Sunset Crater is the site of a volcanic eruption in the year 1064 AD, which covered the region in lava flows for miles around and left a crater 8,096 feet high.

Hike or bike through the volcanic landscapes, and visit the Wupatki National Monument – the remains of the Native American villages that sprung up here after the eruption.

Tonto National Forest

For a contrast to the wide open plains and yawning chasms of the Grand Canyon and Sunset Crater, venture into the dense pine woodlands of Tonto National Forest.

Cycling, horseback riding and camping are all great ways to experience the forest up close, while bald eagles and herons are among the creatures you can spot at wildlife viewing areas like Needle Rock.
