Explore the magnificent city of Budapest, Hungary’s fairy-tale capital, to encounter castles, cathedrals, caves and more. It’s a city of two halves; rent a car through Orbitz in order to fully explore both Buda, the hilly region on the western edge of the Danube, and Pest, the attraction-packed district in the east.
Renting a Car in Budapest: What You Need To Know
If you’ve never been to Budapest before, don’t fear. We’re here to answer all of your questions about renting a car in the Hungarian capital city.
Which companies rent cars in Budapest?
The tourism industry is now well established in Budapest. As such, there are plenty of car rental options for you to use. Thrifty, Hertz, Dollar, Enterprise, Sixt, Avis, Alamo and more all offer low-cost car rentals.
If the choice is intimidating, make things simpler by comparing the prices on Orbitz.
Where do I pick up my car in Budapest?
Most car rental companies have bases on the eastern edge of the Danube River, in the Buda region. Look in the city center for your agency. Alternatively, pick up your rental car at Budapest Airport, which is located to the east of the city center
What documents do I need to take to Budapest?
Take your driving license with you. If you’re traveling from the US you’ll either need a certified Hungarian translation of your license, or you’ll need to obtain an International Driving Permit, which could be simpler.
Make sure you bring your credit card too. This is needed for picking up your rental car and blocking out a security deposit.
What is the minimum age for renting a car in Budapest?
The law in Hungary states that you have to be 21 and to have held your license for a year before you can rent a car. Note that if you’re under 25, you may incur a younger driver surcharge.
Explore Budapest: Hills, Churches & Castles
Many of Budapest’s formidable attractions are spread out across the city. We’ve suggested three of the best districts to explore with your rental car, each one capturing a different side to the character of brilliant Budapest.
Buda Hills
Hikers and sightseers alike flock to the Buda Hills on the western side of the Danube. A short but demanding walk (or a chairlift ride) up to viewpoints such as Elizabeth Lookout rewards you with panoramic views of the city. This area is also home to the Pálvölgy Cave, a subterranean limestone wonder.
Old Town Pest
District V, the old town of Pest, is one of the best places to experience the atmosphere of Budapest. Bring your camera to capture some of the city’s architectural highlights, such as St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Hungarian Parliament Building. Walk or drive through the city center to enjoy these stunning landmarks.
Várkerület
The Castle District, or Várkerület in Hungarian, is packed with some of the most famous sights and the best views in the city. Buda Castle, or the Royal Palace, is several attractions in one. This pastel-pink castle contains the National Gallery and the Castle Museum. Várkerület is also home to the Fisherman’s Bastion and Gellért Hill.
