Petaluma is a city of surprises. While it’s not on many tourists’ itineraries, it’s still packed with historic sites and museums to delight families and culture vultures. Its Downtown district survived the worst of California’s earthquakes, so the architecture comes straight from the mid-19th century; no wonder it’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Don’t miss the city’s museums, dedicated to wildlife, the military and regional history.

Rent a car in Petaluma to drive out of the city to parks and walking trails just beyond the city limits. Drive a little further to reach the coastline and its cities. Let Orbitz guide you through the best car rental deals.

If the name Napa is ringing a bell, you’ve probably seen it on wine bottles across the world. This internationally acclaimed wine-growing region isn’t just great for trying some of California’s best wines; it’s also set in spectacular scenery. V. Sattui is one of the most famous wineries, with a great restaurant and an Italian-style setting. Castello di Amorosa, meanwhile, is certainly eye-catching – you’ll be sipping on merlots from a medieval-inspired castle.
