Nestled on the northwestern tip of Puerto Rico on a sliver of land next to the Atlantic Ocean, the seaside town of Aguadilla is a top vacation destination in the Caribbean. The coastal and contemporary vibe paired with its world-class surfing and marine life, draws beachgoers to the area every year. Once home to the Ramey Air Force Base, today the nearby Rafael Hernandez Airport is a major gateway into Puerto Rico from the United States mainland and other areas of the Caribbean and South America. Since Aguadilla is a popular day trip spot, renting a car directly from the airport is a great idea. If you’d like to take the scenic route, plan in a half an hour drive if travelling from the nearby town of Rincon.
Take your time as you explore the tropical paradise of Aguadilla as there’s plenty to do for all ages. Surfers can head to the pristine shores of Wilderness Beach or Crash Boat Beach, one of the most photographed beaches due to its stunning landscape. There are also spectacular diving spots including La Cueva Submarina in Jobos Beach or Taino Divers in Rincon located within a 20 minute drive from Aguadilla.
If travelling in a group or with children, consider spending the day at Las Cascadas, the largest water park in the Caribbean and a popular attraction with a crazy river, wave pools, water tunnels, and a speed slide. Those who want to take in the culture of Aguadilla can opt to explore the town center where visitors can go street shopping, check out the farmer’s market, or rest at the Plaza de Recreo or El Parterre. For the avid golfers, visitors can take their clubs and spend an afternoon at the flawless and breezy Punta Borinquen Golf Course. It is about an hour away from Aguadilla.
If you’re looking for some adventure, trek off the beaten path and head to the ruins of the Old Aguadilla Lighthouse, known locally as Las Ruinas and located right next to the golf course. While only remnants of the lighthouse structure still stands, as it was heavily damaged in an earthquake in 1918, it’s a picture-perfect spot for photographers looking to capture a few striking photos. Be sure to head over to the new lighthouse as well, the Punta Borinquen Light that was built in 1922.
Visitors will also want to check out a historical and significant landmark in Aguadilla, the Parque de Colon or Columbus Park. Find the monument that marks the place where Christopher Columbus first landed in Puerto Rico, walk along the wooden boardwalk, and marvel at the massive tree house built from the wood of banyan trees.
Looking for somewhere to cool down while getting your groove on? Why not spend a few hours at the only indoor skating rink in the Caribbean. The Aguadilla Ice Skating Rink is open during the day or evening in a large multi-use building that can hold 300 people. If going in the evening, skaters are in for a treat with disco-style laser and light shows.
