See all Key West Intl. car rentals

Key West is the southernmost city in the contiguous United States, and part of the classical American road trip from Miami to the island of Key West. It’s actually located closer to Havana in Cuba than it is to Miami! Explore this popular destination by renting a car to make sure you get around to seeing and doing everything on your list.

What to See in Key West

One of the biggest attractions in Key West is the concrete replica of a buoy at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets. It’s one of the most visited and photographed attractions in Key West, although it isn’t exactly most south. There are several points that cannot be visited by the public that are even farther south. The farthest location that is publicly accessible is the seaward end of the White Street Pier.

The original Key West settlement on the western part of the island is called Old Town and includes the Key West Historic District. This is where you will find the major tourist destinations of the island. Important attractions are the Ernest Hemingway House, Mallory Square, and Key West Museum of Art & History. Duval Street is the bar and restaurant district, including many different entertainment options as well as art galleries, boutiques, and shops. It’s popular for bar hopping and enjoying live music. The north side of the street is more touristic than the south. Mallory Square is the best place to watch sunset from every day.

Key West is a popular seaport destination for passenger cruise ships. Many visitors also like to go out on the water to get a great view of Key West. Here, you will also see the more nature oriented side of the city. Learn sailing or go snorkeling, for example, or simply wander around the island to see the colored houses and enjoy key lime pie, for which the island is known.

To connect Key West to mainland Florida, a railroad was built. This railroad was destroyed during a hurricane but later replaced with the Overseas Highway. Driving down from Miami to Key West (or the other way around) is a classic American road trip, so definitely see if you can make same time to drive part of the route and go island hopping.
