Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Victoria Junction4.0 out of 5.0

We picked this location vs. other Protea hotels in Cape Town based on the central location. 10 minute walk to the waterfront, stores and restaurants out the front door. Having a kitchenette made it even better as we could have breakfast in the room, have coffee/tea, and use the microwave. The only thing to keep in mind is that due to the loft style rooms (I'm assuming), the walls are somewhat thin and noise does carry between rooms. The wifi was also a bit odd -- certain sites like Yahoo, or airlines could not be accessed from the room.
This Hotel made a great base for our stay in Cape Town, nice & central - extremely close to the V&A Waterfront which was fabulous for evenings out. The Hotel was great, we stayed on a B&B basis and the breakfast was really good (lots of variety), the hotel staff were very helpful and the rooms were great. The pool was out of action due to the terrible water shortage that SA were going through but this was no deal breaker for us at this time of year - it looked great though. I would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for a Cape Town base on their travels
The staff were friendly, the room was spacious and immaculate. The restaurant served the best Venison. Great wine selection. The breakfast layout was amazing and offered great choices. The location is perfect.
Stayed here as a part of a Gate 1 tour. Good location for visiting the waterfront. Overall we were pleased with cleanliness and size. Didn't care of two single beds arrangement although they were comfortable with white bedding. The breakfast was quite good.
We've stayed three nights here on a Gate 1 tour. The room was fantastic, with two levels, a king size bed in the loft, and a small bed below. A Nice coffee machine, microwave, two TVs, nothing to complain about. A decent breakfast buffet. The only bad thing was the Internet service, which this hotel outsources to some local company called VAST. This experience was simply bad. The service drops occasionally and tells you that this is the end of free service. Front desk was not helpful. I had to change the MAC address of my wifi card to get back online. Less qualified people would have been left without the Internet until the next day.
Stayed 4 nights. Very nice hotel. Clean rooms, large hot breakfast with food for anyone, comfortable beds, chocolate on your pillow each night and wait staff that is very friendly and helpful. Only downfall is Street traffic is noisy.
Stayed here 4 nights with Gate 1 travel. Our room is facing streets, very noisy at night. Even late at night, cars zoom by, hard to sleep. Woke up several times at night too by the noise. Its about 20 minutes walk to water front. Guide advise take taxi after dark though. Big room big bathroom good breakfast, fast wi fi in the room. 5 minutes walk to supermarket Spar across street. Hotel side has a gas station, weird people hanging out there. One guy begged us for money, we said no. Next time we just walked across street on Spar side.
On the plus side, this hotel is modern and nicely decorated. The location is pretty good; you can walk to the Waterfront (and some restaurants down the road), though you don’t want to walk at night in this neighborhood (lots of vagrants and other sketchy characters after dark). And the staff is friendly and helpful. On the down side, the free internet at this hotel is terrible (it takes forever for a page to load), there is no breakfast included (though we found a nice little cafe around the corner), the room doesn’t have a mini-bar or refrigerator (though the safe is one of the best I’ve had in a hotel), and one side of the hotel is on an extremely busy road. When we got to our room after check-in we realized immediately how noisy it was and asked to move to a room on the other side of the hotel. Fortunately, there was one available; had we been forced to stay in the original room, the noise would have ruined the entire stay. Also something to be aware of: the bathroom has frosted windows rather than walls, so you can see the shadow of the person in the shower and, if someone turns the light on in the bathroom at night, it lights up the entire room. (Imagine you are traveling with a friend or your mother or sister? What were they thinking?) Would I stay here again? Probably not, based on the slow as molasses internet (worst I’ve ever experienced in a hotel); it was pretty much useless.
In short… I enjoyed my stay in this place, to put it in simple terms. Now, this is what I think: POSITIVE POINTS: First I need to commend the staff… ALL staff, truly an asset to this hotel. Front desk / bar / restaurant… and a special mention to the cleaning staff, who do an excellent job of keeping this hotel spotless in all areas. I liked the room appointed to me, with a warm feel to it, nicely decorated, with everything that you expect from a decent 4 star hotel. FREE Wireless was definitely not the fastest there is, but it did allow me to get my work done. Bed very comfortable, and pillow choice to my liking. Bathroom… again, flawless. Everything working to perfection, and amenities more than adequate for this type of hotel. Small basic gym, with machines in good working condition. Did a good job of getting me my needed basic workout. Location is excellent, with a good choice of bars and restaurants for ALL preferences. I like the fact that it is a short and safe walk to Cubana. NEGATIVE POINTS: Lighting in the room needs to be re-thought . A little strange to me. I would add in this section that for this category of hotel, I think that the pricing is higher than it should be. I would suggest an improvement on the soundproofing of the room. I unfortunately had a noisy neighbour. Although the free internet was mentioned also in the positive section, I would suggest a better speed for guests. I did get my job done… but at a slow pace. In today’s world… this is not rocket-science anymore. SUMMING UP Yes, it is a decent hotel with (in my opinion) a decent offer for an average 4-star hotel. I would just stress these negative points that need to be ironed out. Remember… there is no lack of hotel choices in Cape Town, and if you do not keep your finger on the button… you can lose business very fast in this city.
The staff are friendly and food is good in the restaurant, if a little limited at dinner. The rooms are comfortable and quirky, if a little smaller than at some Protea hotels. The outdoor pool is across the carpark and the only disabled access is in the carpark, which taxis and coaches cannot access - very silly and awkward. Most rooms have no real view to speak of. The complimentary internet has a very small daily cap and you really have to pay for unlimited access, which is a little slow. Our laundry was also not delivered on time and when I went to speak to reception, only half of it was initially delivered. Worth staying here, but a few minor kinks that the Hotel needs to work out.
