From outside this hotel blends perfectly with the 18th and 19th century houses in this charming old part of the town. The reception area and adjacent rooms are all part of the old building but at the back are two new wings. The hotel which has over 50 rooms looks deceptively small. I dithered about whether this was 4 or 5 star and in the end the friendly, excellent service swung it for me. The location couldn’t be better and for travellers like us with 3 weeks of suitcases, the room was well supplied with cupboard space so we could properly unpack. We had everything we needed - a small balcony a table or desk where we could each have a work area but the room was quite small and idiosyncratically decorated with a baroque mirror dividing the bedroom from the bathroom. Breakfast was excellent and lunch was fine. The staff were always smiling and helpful. As other reviewers have mentioned you do feel rather overlooked (though actually on the third floor where we were I doubt the rooms opposite ie the other side of the garden could really look in) so everyone kept their muslin curtains drawn, these were light brown so made the room rather dark but I suppose in the heat of summer that would be welcome. Worth noting that below the dining room you can see the foundations and steps of the original church which burnt down a few times and was finally rebuilt outside the original small town.
Three very comfortable nights spent here in a well appointed room with a very comfortable bed and a good bathroom with shower. Car parking is by valet, thank goodness, as the car park is tight for space and street parking is a nightmare! Breakfasts were excellent , lots of choice, and we had one evening meal which was very good, but the restaurant lacked character for an evening meal ( same area as breakfast is served for which it is very pleasant). We had an early departure and breakfast boxes were provided which were very welcome. The hotel is very nicely decorated and everyone was very helpful, its centrally placed location makes it perfect for exploring the town and nearby areas. Would definitely use again.
Stayed her three nights, staff very friendly, lovely breakfasts with plenty of choice, only disappointment was the bedroom size first one we were shown was very small, dark and had no balcony so we moved to one that had a balcony but still quite small, a bit disappointing for a five star hotel, having said that it is in an excellent location for shopping and dining close by. Bit difficult to find if your driving here as all the road signs are at kerb level and a lot of one way streets but the do have valet parking which is a help.
We stayed for 3 nights in March 2018 and used the hotel as a base for our visit to Stellenbosch. As it was our anniversary we had a bottle of bubbly in our room on arrival. The room was very spacious with an enormous bed, large bathroom and was very clean and well maintained. The staff could not have been more helpful and booked trips for us, gave us local information and were very attentive to our every need. The food was good and I would recommend this hotel if you are planning on visiting Stellenbosch. There are plenty of eating places around the hotel and it is very central if you want to explore on foot. Overall a very enjoyable stay.
Stayed here two nights while on a group tour. The staff was friendly and ready to assist with anything we needed. Rooms were very large, clean and comfortable with excellent wifi service in room and lobby. I enjoyed the balcony in the evening overlooking the outdoor patio from the dining area with soft music in the air. The lobby and public areas have a lot of older character and charm and the rooms seem quite modern with beautiful large bathroom with glassed in showers and separate large soaker tubs. Nice pool area, keep in mind water conservation during the year. The pool was covered for the hottest portion of the day and no drains for the tubs while we were there to help. Nice selection for the buffet breakfasts. Excellent location for shopping and dining close by.
Friendly staff, in the heart of Stellenbosch, very clean and cosy. The valet parking is awesome and works well. The bread is wonderful. The whole atmosphere is cosy and makes you feel good. Come back for sure and stay a little more.
I stayed at the Oude Werf hotel for 2 nights and was dismally disappointed. Before I get into the cons, I do need to mention the few pros that deserve recognition. The ambiance at the hotel is really beautiful and the location is unbeatable. The food was great as was the valet parking. Having said that, there seems to be complete mismanagement. We left our hotel room at 8am and put the "make up my room" sign on the door upon leaving. We returned at 1:45pm to which the room had not been cleaned. Let me start off by saying that you won't find such mishaps in a 2 star hotel let alone 4 star (that is the Oude Werf). This is by no means the cleaning staffs fault but entirely due to zero management. Upon speaking to the manager, he was extremely rude and told me that they had to ensure that rooms were ready for guests checking in at 2pm that day.. in other words, they don't seem to be too interested in their current guests but more so interested in making sure they're turning tables. He was highly unprofessional in the way he spoke to me. A hotel with such potential needs to note that it is QUALITY OVER QUANTITY and not the other way round. If you are unable to cater to the needs of your current paying guests, then you are missing key elements in running a successful establishment. I must also note that the bedrooms have zero privacy and we had to keep our curtains closed for the duration of our stay. The pool goers look directly into a majority of the rooms. Lastly, we paid R3200 per night which is rather astronomical considering you can pay HALF of that for the 5 star hotel across the road.
This was a lovely hotel set in an affluent part of Africa famous for it's vineyards and colleges. The rooms were spacious and very clean. The restaurant was lovely and reasonably priced. The bar was well stocked except they only had bottled beer, and it wasn't to my taste, mainly indigenous African lager beer. I and most others I spoke to had real issues getting Wifi to work here, even in the Reception area. The surrounding area is very friendly and safe, but it is clearly an area for tourists and wealthy people.
A cute hotel in a terrific location for visiting Stellenbosch. Most shops, university sites, and meals are within a manageable walking distance. The room feels very open and European. The common areas are comfortable and relaxed. We struggled a little with the light switches in the room and with the air conditioning, but ultimately managed. I stayed at the Oude Werf as part of a package tour, so cannot reflect at all on the daily room costs.
We had a lovely stay here ... the room was stunning and immaculate overlooking the pool but it looked straight into the other rooms across the way.... so be aware ;) There was a restaurant and a bar in the hotel .... but we only had breakfast here , it was good and the staff were plentiful, however they spent most of their time standing chatting to each other which made it difficult to attract attention. There was also a lot of building and drilling noise coming from the adjacent building.... I did mention it to reception but she was totally unaware? Great location and lots of restaurants around.Handy valet car park attached to the side of the hotel. Good stay.
