In all honesty Trish and I had mixed roller coaster feelings the entire time we were here- after weighing up did we ultimately get what we wanted aka a 4 star hotel experience and to rest ? No, were let down by the overall experience. The above said I will let you know the staff are 5 star- attentive, wanting to help, accomodating. The only reason we are not scoring higher for them is non disclosure of extras such as parking and early checkin. Those of you who read our reviews know we will and do try it all from 5 star to campervan and back again with a little dash of pizazz splattered on our authentic selves! Long drive, aching backs, no sleep - you know the drill so rather than trying our luck on a Airbnb apartment on this occasion (same price or actually a little cheaper) or a smaller boutique hotel we were not in the space to take a gamble so we made the decision to stay at the Novotel chain. Yes we admit it we wanted that assurance, not unlike that initial marriage proposal (apparently only available to men and women in Australia) that you know exactly what your getting into - Trish and I have been lucky we landed each other and got exactly what we wanted but not all relationships end up this way... With our most recent run of boutique hotels which were All more than pleasantly surprising - we didn’t want to break our good fortune so chose Novotel Canberra. We saught the perfect no gamble, cookie cutter experience - Is that why people keep going back for Big Macs from Tokyo to Toledo ? They know what’s coming? #wedonteatmcdonalds A good time to let you know Novotel slogan on room card etc “be very satisfied at Novotel” - and OMG we intended to be, the desire and requirement so precise infact that we called them rather than booking online ; We confirmed a early check in as we were nearly there and were told “yes of course we can accomodate you with that” and then further confirmed a requirement for a bathtub and were told yes the rooms had a bath- we got our exact price for the room - boom we are lo Lex and loaded. - ahh the security of a Big Cuddly Corporate brand wrapping their familiar arms around you when at your most vulnerable. Off to the chemist for bath salts and tea tree oil for the aches and pains. We arrive at the time specified and were told there would be a $20 early checkin fee... I’ll start by saying I would have happily paid that had there been transparency on the phone - I instantly got my back up-and Trish backed away from the desk, moonwalk styling without the smile .. To be frank It felt as though in our tired and disheveled state we were being held to ransom they had us there by our tired turkey necks- and on that note we would rather drive on to another hotel - on principal! We refused to pay and they honoured that - not a great way to start the relationship ( feeling squeezed in all the wrong places) Hello, hello, hello - don’t unpack your bath salts yet we got to the room and the room had no bath- ? Tried to call down and room 704 phone handset was not working they probably knew we would be calling -alas I dialed using speakerphone (if you need that tip) Ok so now they have moved us to a room with a bath, let’s just get into it already, alas forget all our woes- within 15 mins while the bath was still running - we hear what appears to be drunken male children not only screaming and singing the with really load music in the hallway but either falling on or knocking on our door. I open the door to ask them to reappear what is a communal public hallway only to be confronted my lots (and I mean lots as in between 7-10) drunken, steroid sized men “playing around”. Pretty intimidating sight... we speak to front desk and are advised a football team is on our level and the one above....They acknowledged drunken behaviour and apologise.... Overall a 2 for the bed even though the room was noisy, bathroom had hair and mould and we had a weekend with footballers. Had these been a 3 star hotel rather than a 4 star hotel we would have scored them a 3 as less expectation would have been there. THE GOOD Heavenly comfort on the king bed Attentive f2f reception staff Fair trade bathroom products Location THE BAD specifically called rather than online booked as we needed a bathtub - didn’t get that had to call down and change rooms again Tried to charge us at reception for early checkin after not disclosing on the phone Visible mould in bathroom tiles THE UGLY Hair on bathtub Windows actually visibly lined with dust/dirt on the inside and out Tiles all Broken tile grout in bathroom Footballers behaving badly - just another way society enables these overpaid thugs.
This hotel is nice and comfortable and reasonably centrally located for shopping and amenities. There is a pharmacy and a tourist information literally next door. The staff were all friendly and accommodating and the breakfasts are excellent.
Stayed here for one night for business. Room was neat and clean, bed was comfortable. Bathroom was ok, strange design having the sink out of the bathroom area. I ordered room service, an American cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake. Both were ordinary. I only ate it because i was starving; the meat tasted microwaved and the fries were cold. Milkshake was just like having a big M. I would stay here again but wouldn't recommend ordering room service at all.
Adequate is how I would describe it - "executive king" room pretty small, no view, dated but functional bathroom. Lifts took ages and I always judge a room on the fridge noise and yep noisy as hell had to turn it off. Also building "creaked" all night (weird), only 1 pillow and paper thin walls (hi amorous neighbours lol). Buffet breakfast was also terrible. On the plus side excellent staff could not be faulted at all and very good location, easy walk to restaurants etc. Nice pool too.
I've stayed at the Novotel Canberra a few times over the years and like it. Its a typically comfortable Novotel offering that extra touch with well trained staff who know their stuff. This time it was a little different. I arrived at 12.30am after a series of flight delays from Brisbane after a long and arduous day's work. To be greeted with the news that the Novotel had experienced a systems crash and had no record of my booking was not great news. I would have thought a daily print-out of bookings would have been automatic, something a colleague from one of the other top hotel chains said should have been part of the daily procedure. Now in all fairness staff did respond well, initially offering to relocate me to the Mercure Canberra then, when I said I really was exhausted, offered me a room that had been allocated but the booking hadn't showed up. The room was fine - as always and I had a comfortable if shortened chance to sleep before heading off to an appointment the next morning. The ACCOR service was forgotten in this scenario - perhaps an oversight but understandable. Will I return to the Novotel Canberra - yes, in fact I'll be back in a couple of weeks. They remain a good chain with upper-end service and I'll continue to use them by preference. But they need to get their contingencies in place for the unexpected like storm-induced power-outs!!
The staff were extremely friendly and the location is perfect...right in the city. The rooms are large and all the amenities you need are available. WiFi was good. The whole place needs a reno though....the carpet is sub par and there are a lot of stains. All in all it was quiet and a good couple of nights.
I arrived at 2am and the night manager was very welcoming and helpful, he even brought me up a toasted sandwich as I had, had a very long day and night. The location is good if you are into shopping, cafe's and dining ( who isn't?) but the hotel is tired, the room was old and in desperate need of a makeover, and the mattress lumpy, I tried not to think about how old it was. But the room was quiet and the service at the hotel was really good, they even extended my check out to 2pm as I arrived so late. There is a taxi rank directly outside and a chemist and convenience store on the same block.
I have stayed at this hotel a few times due to its location but each time I wonder why. Being a Novotel I expect better and other Novotel’s I do get better service. The Canberra Novotel stay was very disappointing. First they moved my car in the car park and scratched it which the staff admitted to, so don’t leave them your car keys. The room was dirty on the phone there must have been a months’ worth of dirt and crumbs. On check in being a platinum member I didn’t receive any water in my room and no thank you for being a loyal member. The next day I moved to the Hyatt and the service was wonderful.
Novotel Canberra has been a great place to stay, the service of staff always First Class and the Restaurant menus changed regularly. I don't think the current bar seating arrangements are particularly suitable ,It may look nicer but isn't a comfortable area any more...... BUT...... like all buildings The Novotel , (especially the third floor) is really in need of attention.. It is tired and damaged ,the Carpets they really aren't inviting, they look horrible and Grotty..I will avoid staying on that floor, until it improves, One expects better from Novotel and so I hope...... along with other buildings in North Bourne Avenue .....they will make an effort to revitalise this building (especially inside) when the Rail Construction work outside i nears completion .
We were driving to Melbourne from Sydney and started early morning 5-6am. So we rang up Novotel Canberra. Breakfast was great and toilet break cleaner, than BP! We were served by Akash, who made us feel very welcome! Highly recommended, will be back.
