The hotel is not new, but for charm and a sense of days past, book a stay at this property. So convenient for a trip to Cumberland Island. Matt, the gen manager, could not have been more hospitable to us offering food and water since they no longer pack picnic lunch to take to the island. Coffee and continental breakfast were great when enjoyed on the open veranda full of rocking chairs. I would definitely come back. Street construction and beautification happened to be going on, but once that is finished, should be quiet once again.

What a cool hotel, super friendly people, can't wait to get back there . Old school bar great food.Plus your right across the street from the Ferry, and down the street from the Sub. Museum. And Live local music. .

We stayed there two nights as we were visiting Cumberland island. Old "authentic" hotel downtown with retro atmosphere. Rooms are clean, and staff , and especially the dog, very friendly. Breakfast is basic but good. Cumberland visit with the day tour is worth it.

The staff and location make this hotel. It is under new management. Renovations started with the restaurant (which is closed). We stayed in room 12 which has both the patio view and river view. The problem with the patio is it’s a public area so people could be sitting outside your room at night. Be careful not to be over the bar. The room itself was a let down. It’s very small. The bed was super soft and the headboard and footboard were loose. It felt like the the mattress was to big and floppy for the frame. The tv is very small. Bathroom was small. The entire room could use a good cleaning. I might try again when booked on the Ferry if the renovations have been completed in the rooms.

Great folks. Like staying with family. Our haven during Hurricane Dorian. New owners are beginning restorations to make the hotel the centerpiece of historic St Mary’s once again. And the bar is full of friendly locals & southern hospitality.

We selected this hotel due to the location near the Cumberland Island Ferry and were not disappointed. It's a very old hotel with a lot of history and could use a new facelift but what remains is a gem. If you are handicapped look elsewhere as this hotel does not have an elevator. The desk clerk was super friendly and accommodating. We've already referred people who have plans to visit during their trip to Cumberland Island.

The pictures on the web are a farce! This property from afar looks pretty neat and does have you gravitate towards it until you actually come to the entrance doors. The stoop tile is all chipped and dirty. Open the door and a hodgepodge of toys, furniture and a dog roaming are your greeters. Not a soul at the desk and moldy smell. Now for the room... struggled with the door lock as the door knob was falling off the door. The room smelled of mold, the light fixtures had no lightbulbs, the a/c wall unit did not cool enough and had unfinished patchwork. The ceiling had been patched but never fully repainted. The sink handle broken and they patched with tape. The bathroom tile work was partially done. They had a decorative side table which by the looks of the amount of dust collected it probably hadn’t been cleaned since the original owner. The headboard to the bed was broken and the mattresses must of been original to the hotel. The morning breakfast well let’s just say, you had to check to make sure that the house cat didn’t leave it’s marks (yes, they also had a cat whom was roaming on everything) along with several dogs. A pet friendly property but this was over the top! Not to mention a beautification street construction project which started each morning at 7a.m.

I love that this place is old and unique. It smells like an antique store and looks like one too. Nest atmosphere, but something seemed a little off. The bar downstairs was full of locals, but the restaurant was empty. We were the only couple in there on a Friday at 5:30 pm. The waitress/hostess was sweet and attentive but I was scared to eat the food as I looked up the ratings after we ordered. The cook was nice and the filet and potato were good but I wouldn't go back due to the place being somewhat dirty. The fan was covered in dust the kitchen door was damaged and the menus were dirty. I did like the laid back vibe but maybe not SO laid back. Our room was clean and had a window AC unit, but the sheets were stained, the mattresses and box springs looked ancient and the sink was loose and wobbled. TV was nice and view was AMAZING. It did get noisy, late at night due to loud people under our window outside but the AC helped drown them out. We actually slept okay and I'm glad we stayed here to get the experience. St. Mary's is a cool place that feels unpretentious and friendly and we enjoyed our stay. The hotel needs updating and repairs, but I imagine that would be quite expensive. If you have pet allergies or dust allergies 😷 this place may not be for you.

I love anything that is ALL AMERICAN and our HISTORY. IT is what made the US of A. The Historical town, and the byway view of the water is beautiful. Little shops, you can take 17 then jump onto 95 into Florida. or vice versa. East ride, if you have the time for stopping and sight seeing.

I added a star for the location. Pros include a restaurant and bar, nice people, and a lot of history. Cons include being not ADA accessable, pets (cat and dogs) in the bar and lobby. Although there is certain charm to staying in a historic setting, it lacks some of the modern conveniences. For example, the light switch was neat, but outlets were lacking. If you can handle stairs and have no dander allergies, I highly recommend a stay.
