Fabulous place to stay, all of the staff that we met were, happy, helpful and content. Our only disappointment was that 20% service charge is added to everything that you purchase, especially harsh in the pub when it's over £10 for a pint of beer and a packet of nuts, don't mind paying that fee in the restaurant where you are served at the table. But for pouring a glass of wine or pulling a pint of beer NO, NOT ON.

Remote, quiet and peaceful bliss!

Perfect for a winter break away from it all! Despite being cold outside the hotel was amazingly cosy. We loved that we could actually see the stars in the night sky due to lack of light pollution. Dinner in Henry’s was fabulous. We slept so well as there is no traffic noise. The perfect little mini break in a very interesting and historic location. Wonderful for anyone with a particular interest in all things nautical!

Very relaxing

Beautiful location and lovely spacious room. Condition average for a very old building, but bathroom needed updating and drainage was poor from shower.

The bedroom was ok, clean and a good size. Room 11, is very noisy due to its position close to the car park. With cars coming and going, driving on the pebble covered parking area. The restaurant staff need to be trained in how to serve and to check if a table needs to be cleared. At breakfast, our used cereal bowls and used side plates were left on the table during the whole time we were sitting at the table. I got feed up with this and removed the dirty items my self. I think that the prices in the restaurant and the pub are a bit on the expensive side, in the bar £19 for haddock, chips and minted crushed peas. £10 for desserts, total for soft drink, main course and dessert came to £75. In the main restaurant, we had dinner, 2 people, main and dessert, soft drink, came to £105 with no wine. The food was only average. I think the bottom line is that we would not come back to the hotel. And would not recommend it to friends. I’d give it 6/10.

Love Bucklers Hard visited decades ago & The Hotel. Professional check-in. Room in the older part of the hotel, wear & tear on the stairs. Carpet threadbare, paintwork chipped, handrails sticky. Forgave this in a 300 year old building. Rooms well presented & clean. Bathroom tired, poor sealants, dirty tile grout. Bramley bathroom products. Beds comfortable & linen clean. River views. All OK so far. Some issues from this point. Hotel has a monopoly on food. Choice is the restaurant, or ‘Harry’s’ pub. We ate at Harry’s. Prices average/high. Steak £24 Burger £16 Lamb chop £20; drinks also average/high. Waitress was fun. Food is where it gets sketchy. Steak & chop didn’t come with additional vegetables. It seemed so mean! A ploy to order more? It’s typical in the UK to have at least one second veg. The food itself was ok, portions small. The burger our recommendation. In the room there were mosquitos. We killed a few before bed. We were awoken to room full of them, killed well over thirty before falling asleep! Woke covered with bites. Hotel knew of the problem – so why no warning or products to combat it? Breakfast was efficient. Disappointing buffet, no fruit salad, loaf with slow toaster, no pastries. Bizarre deep cereal jars with spoons rather than ladles, impossibly daft! The cooked breakfasts were to order & of high quality, but the portions were small. Checkout smooth. Still love this Hotel, want to help improve things so it’s 4/5 (otherwise it's a 3/5 on the day).

A stopover when walking The Solent Way

Unique setting and an ideal stopping point when walking the Solent Way. However we felt it was over priced for the quality of the room. A pleasant enough room but the bed was worn sloping from the centre to both sides and the toilet flush didn’t work effectively and there was no toilet brush. All staff were delightful friendly and helpful. The food in the pub was good and the service excellent.

Beautiful location, disappointing room

I wouldn’t recommend room 31. It’s up 2.flights of shallow stairs. You need small feet. No proper shower, only a hand shower. Water pressure very low - it took ages to get a small amount of water in the bath. I was not offered venison at dinner but overheard other guests being offered it. Only 4 choices of main courses. Breakfast good but no croissants as on visit a couple of weeks ago.

The hotel was lovely and in a wonderful setting, but we paid extra for a room that was a bit tired in all honesty. The bathroom in particular needed modernising. We also booked a table at Henry’s Pub and although the staff were attentive and polite, and cannot be faulted, the menu was disappointing, the “specials” had one extra option which was half a chicken. A specials board usually has more options really. We ordered 3 courses, and two meals were sent back as they were luke warm. One meal included salad, which was a couple of lettuce leaves and little else. No veg with the pork meal. They offered to take money off the bill but in truth, we can see why the pub wasn’t packed, which on a lovely summers evening, it should be. It needs an overhaul. Walking through the hotel and grounds was lovely though. A few changes could make the stay outstanding.

splendid view

A lovely hotel in a marvellous location, with a splendid view from our comfortable bedroom, and a delicious breakfast. We plan to revisit - and perhaps stay for longer. The village is fascinating and delightful, and the walk to Beaulieu was well worth it.
