My wife and I recently had a number of nights stay at the Royal Carlton and chose to do this after reading multiple reviews on a variety of websites. We took a taxi direct from the airport which took approximately 15-20 minutes at a cost of €18.00. We had planned on taking the bus into the city €1.50 (each) but decided against this as there was an issue with the ticket machines. On arrival, we were pleased as the fountain was in full flow and the sun was shining, which gave a good impression as in reality, some photographs on websites do not always reflect what can be in reality a disappointment. The reception area was perfect which oozed exclusivity with luxurious carpets, beautiful lighting and wonderful seating. The reception staff welcomed us to the hotel and were both friendly and efficient. Our room, a deluxe room on the second floor was perfect with good decor, good quality furnishings and soft touch paraded walls, which added to the experience. One negative....there were (as in many Italian hotels) no kettle or coffee maker. The bathroom was well equpped with modern facilities along with a decent array of toiletries, quality soft towels and robes. Thankfully, even though it was October, the A/C was still working and actually quite...which is always a bonus. The hotel is ideally located a short distance from the main city centre approx 15 minutes level walk away. You will have to cross a main road follow it to the left and turn right onto via dell indepenzia (adjacent to the sister hotel - internazionale) this takes you direct past st Pietro Cathederale and up to the main square (piazza maggiore) where you will find the fountain of Neptune (undergoing repair) and other famous sights. There are covered walkways covering most of the route, which give a lovely ambience to the city. The gym of the is excellent and has decent and diverse equipment, but there are time constraints as I found to our dismay one evening, because our room was located directly above the gym. I could not get through to reception and literally had to go down and turn the music off after 22:30, the following night, these had the same occurrence, but this time reception sorted this out. If you like a siesta prior to going out for a late night.......forget it if your room is above the gym. The spa area is perfect even thought there is a charge of €30.00 for the pleasure. There are additional services available ie. massage, facial etc, but these need to be booked. The facilities in the spa are what you would expect, comfortable beds to relax on......a perfect way to end the day before venturing out into the city for the rigours it has to offer. The breakfast is full and hearty of a buffet style and we could honestly not fault this. My only morning, I wanted to take a cup of water up for my wife to have her herbal tea in bed, but the maitre’d......refused, but offered room service. Need I say more..........Jobsworth! The hotel as almost perfect, there are some beautiful and opulent areas which present perfect photo opportunities, particularly the marble spiral staircase. The elevated seating areas to the fro t of the hotel are perfect for chilling with a glass or two of the locals local, with added ambience when the fountain is on. When We next return to Bologna, I would stay here again as the overall experience was good, but let down by little things.

Beautiful, old, classy hotel. Hall, rooms, restaurant – a tasty old school. Rooms – functional, friendly. Some have balconies (nice choice). Convenient location. Friendly staff. Only the small elevators spoilt the fun, but just a little bit. One of the best hotels in Bologna, in my opinion. Wersja polska: piekny, stary hotel. Warto pomieszkać.

This hotel is considered high-end in Bologna. Therefore I'll compare with high end hotels not with the local average. It's clean, it looks very posh inside with crystal chandeliers and marble Roman-style sculptures all over the lobby and Conference Center. The rooms are very nice with fabrics on the walls and the decor is spotless. However, as they say the devil is in the details. You'd expect them to be fine tuned in a hotel like that. Well, not quite. I was traveling in business. Upon arrival on Saturday around 6pm I wanted to refresh my shirts before the gala dinner at 8pm and the conference starting on Sunday morning - yes it did start on Sunday morning! Since there was no iron in my room I called the reception and they told me the only option to do that was the laundry and pressing service. The only problem was that it would be unavailable before Monday (see attached photo)! Forget it then. I was leaving on Monday after lunch. The receptionist didn't care. He didn't even try to pretend he wanted to find a solution. I found a solution myself. Outside of the hotel where somebody wanted to help a foreigner free of charge, with a big smile even though it was a clothes shop and it was a completely out of scope activity for that super friendly young man who dragged a steamer out of the storage room and helped me out immediately. Shame on you Carlton! Another thing that I didn't like about this hotel was faulty air-conditioning. When I arrived the room was freezing. I opened the balcony door wide because it was pleasant 25 degrees outside and I tried to air the room. I switched off the air con but it kept on running. Wide open balcony door did not help. I closed it hoping that the air con would stop since I'd switched it off in the meantime. No, it wouldn't. I tried to increase the temperature to the maximum. Useless. The air coming out of the air con was icy cold. I called the reception. They admitted there must have been something wrong and promised to send technical support. Guess what? I didn't see one throughout my stay neither did I see any effect of technical intervention because it was freezing all the time. I called them again the following day and told them there was no difference. They were surprised to hear that so I tried to change the room. They said it was impossible because of the conference - they were full. They promised to send technical support again. I guess nobody came round because I kept using 2 extra blankets for the night. None of my coworkers had the same problem. I came back home with rusty voice and a cold. That's why in my humble opinion with that attitude this hotel is only average. Sorry Carlton you won't see me again. I've stayed at other hotels in Bologna before and you should learn from their staff. Time to improve and get rid of this attitude.

All great things to say about this hotel: Good location close to City centre. Large, clean, comfortable rooms. Breakfast was a hugs buffet with plenty of vegan and gluten free options. The staff were always helpful and friendly.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights on a break in beautiful Bologna and were very pleased with this large hotel. Very Comfortable bed and bathroom fine, despite no walk-in shower. Massive choice at breakfast, hot and cold, including gluten-free options. Our only criticism is air-con did not seem to work in the room (6th floor) but we opened the balcony door at night and it was OK. Well located, 15 minutes walk to the city centre and 5 minutes from the rail station and the airport bus stop.

I have never seen so much stupid stuff get to gether like this. I can't even go and eat breakfast after long wait beacuase stupid girl keep saying no you can't go inside even I told her my room number. She is worse then border police. Very sorry about the hotel. Juat one mistake is enough for me.

This hotel met my most important demands: it was quiet (I slept very well), the breakfast buffet was very good, the hotel gym was well equipped and every machine in great condition. The conference rooms and that part of the hotell was also excellent, beautiful rooms (even the bathrooms) and kind and helpful staff!

I stayed at the " Royal Hotel Carlton, Bologna" four days in September 2017, the staff is friendly and helpful. The hotel is well located close to the rail station and places of interest. The hotel is elegant and very clean and the room was spacious. I recommend this establishment.

Very convenient location a surprisingly good deal for this high standard of hotel. Rooms had everything you could need including comfortable beds and AC! Breakfast was nicely set out. Would come again even for a family visit

We attended a three-day conference at the Royal Hotel Carlton, and were impressed with both the accommodations and the service. Coffee breaks, lunches, conference rooms, guest rooms, all were first-rate and delivered as scheduled. The breakfasts were among the best buffet breakfasts I've had in Europe, and far better than anything at USA hotels. We would gladly go to another conference there.
