A one night stay (using IHG loyalty reward points) at the NEC Holiday Inn Express; with my wife who was participating in the Cake International Show (her first ever entry, won Bronze in her class). We were staying another two nights at another nearby hotel on loyalty points for the remainder of the show, but they were full and we needed the extra night beforehand to be there in good time (with cake!) On arrival we found the hotel easily (both via the road signs and our sat-nav with the postcode) and were pleased to find the car park no too busy. At reception they were expecting us, and soon had us checked in, including complimentary car parking as we were staying on a reward night – normally £7. My loyalty program profile has a default for “quiet room, high floor, away from lifts” and this was provided without having to ask at check in. My wife and I both like the Holiday Inn pillow menu, with both feather and fibre options available, and we both had a good night’s sleep on the comfy queen size double bed. The bathroom is slightly unusual, in that the outer door swings to provide an inner door to the toilet area, but the toilet is “visible” via frosted glass from the adjacent shower cubicle. Typical of Holiday Inn’s “Express” offering, there were only liquid soap dispensers (no soap bars provided) at both the sink and shower, and only disposable plastic drinking cups. There were plenty of fluffy towels provided, along with hot water and excellent water pressure during our stay, but the bathroom extractor fan was very noisy. This was not a major issue as it only ran when the bathroom light was switched on, so we reported this at checkout the following day. My wife’s cake had to be at the NEC before 9am, so we spoke with reception and left the hotel early to deliver it, returning for breakfast and checkout later that morning. The reception staff even added an additional days complimentary parking just to be sure the “Parking Eye” camera system overseeing the hotel car park would not look to fine us following our departure and return - very thoughtful thank you. On returning for breakfast we found a good selection of food available, both hot and cold. I was unable to find any strawberry jam at one point, despite many other flavours being available. A manager passing by asked if I needed any help, and went straight away to get some more for me. The staff working there that day were most helpful and attentive, and the breakfast buffet was constantly being topped up by them during our visit. All in all, an enjoyable stay. You do need a car or taxi to get to the NEC halls themselves, as it’s just a bit too far to walk – and there are no pavements or walkways that we saw. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and even though it is at the lower cost end of the spectrum and a little further away on the NEC site, we would consider it perfectly acceptable for a night or two when visiting the NEC if you have a car (or can use taxis). Our thanks to all if the staff, for their efforts in making us so welcome.
A multitude of failures from start to finish. Arrived at Holiday Inn Express at 11pm at night. We were allocated a room. When we opened the door, this room was not ready for guests. Wet towels on bathroom floor, unmade beds and juice in a glass on the bedside table. Returned to reception, spoke to the guy who had checked us in, who put us to manager to deal with us. Was informed, there was no other twin room available, but she could put us in a double room. Told her this was not ideal ( if we'd wanted a double room, then that's what we would have booked). She then advised they could put up a sofa bed alongside the double bed, if we preferred this. We accepted this on the understanding it was for 1 night and we would be transferred to a twin room for our Saturday night. The manager went and got us a complimentary bottle of rose wine. Told to check at reception, after breakfast for more info the next morning. After breakfast, receptionist advised us a new room was ready and we could go and move our belongings. We went to this room and couldn't believe, it was yet another unready room. Unmade beds so we looked no further. Back to reception, complained, got a handful of complimentary drinks vouchers and then told this. Leave our belongings in our first room - do what we have to do during the day - and when we return we will get the key for the twin room we will be getting for Saturday night. I even said, so effectively, we have two rooms until we return from our day out. The receptionist advised yes! When we return, go to our room to find the keycard will not open the door. Head for reception so he activates the key to open our room. Put the card in the slot, door opens, to find our belongings not there, but a case belonging to someone else, their toiletries in the bathroom and they'd obviously had pre drinks in the room. Panicking now-as where is our belongings. Heading back to reception, when we are mer with yet another complimentary bottle of wine and two glasses. He goes away to 'solve' this issue, we head to reception and eventually he comes back and says our belongings have been moved to twin room. They had been, but, this could all have been handled so much more efficiently. The staff attitude is very much throw some complimentary vouchers at them and that'll solve everything. We have since put our complaints in writing and got a reply of "we'll we are sorry for any inconvenience". Overall, just not good enough.
My husband and I stayed here last weekend as we were attending an event at the NEC. As the event was a birthday present the hotel gave us free drinks vouchers to help celebrate. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was included and was hot buffet style with a selection of cereals pastries fruit etc. Even the hubby enjoyed it. The pub next door was only 2 minutes away if that. Nice food but it does get busy. The hotel is in a fab location from the NEC just across the road. We will definitely be staying here again for any NEC events. Thanks for making our stay a great one. :-)
We stayed here at the beginning of October before are flight from Birmingham airport.Nice clean hotel, plenty of parking here but you are charged for parking.Would definitely stay here again if I was in the area.Breakfast was very good.
We stayed at the Holiday inn Express Birmingham NEC for a 1 night stay before a flight from the nearby airport. We were greeted with a friendly member of staff who gave us all the information we needed. The rooms are a reasonable size with air conditioning and everything you would expect from the Holiday Inn Express brand. The hotel is next to a pub that serves food but it also has its own bar and restaurant. Breakfast is included as with all HI Express hotels. This represents great value for money. We booked 1 night and 8 days parking, the only downside was the fact that you have to get a taxi to the airport which costs £9 for a 5 minute trip! Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone flying from Birmingham Airport simply for the value for money £43 for a hotel near to an airport or £73 with 8 days parking. You can’t beat that.
3* hotel with clean rooms. Helpful and nice personnel. Breakfast basic continental (beans, scrambled eggs, cumberland sausages, bacon, white bread, porridge, few different jams, nutella, yogurt, fruits, coffee, tea, orange and apple juice). Unfortunately quite tasteless. Air conditioning not working properly. Shower and toilet clean as well.
Convenient for NEC exhibitors so you don’t get Express pricing but you do get an included basic cooked breakfast. Room maintenance was lacking with faulty bathroom fan and tv plus a leaking shower cubical. Fortunately everything else was good but not sure I like paying to park without visible cameras. At best functional - if you are a day visitor stop on route!
Two seniors regularly use this hotel for parking and staying prior to an early flight. This year we utilised the venue differently, in that we checked in on our flight day, parked the car, but then did not stay until we returned late at the end of our holiday. All worked very smoothly and the breakfast after our stay was perfectly adequate, quality food and freshly cooked. You cannot expect a venue of this sort to give vast displays of food, but what was on offer was fine and we shall certainly stay again. Tips for customers staying as we did. There were no problems but there could have been. Do ensure that the number of nights that your vehicle is parked includes the night of your return. Ours when we checked was one day short, but there was no issue in adding the further night, just ensure you do, to avoid nasty charges.
Stayed at this hotel while visiting the NEC. No frills holiday in standard, but a little pricey. Breakfast good and beds reasonable comfortable but noisy night. Mentioned this to the night staff but never got an update. Positives are that it is next to a pub which deserves a clap. Great food, good beer and friendly staff.
We stayed the night before a short trip to Rome and left the car at the hotel. We had food at the adjacent pub which was pretty good. Hotel booked a taxi for our short journey to the airport, no complaints about the service in the hotel. As it was early before breakfast service opened you could still have coffee, toast and pastries. However, on our return the car had been broken into in a theft attempt, when we reported it to reception they did not seem very surprised as a result we will not use again.
