Novum Select Hotel Berlin Checkpoint Charlie4.0 out of 5.0

The five stars I've given this hotel obviously reflect the value for money, not the standard. It was a well maintained hotel in a good location; easy to get to and easy to get around (3 different S-Bahn/U-Bahn lines nearby). It may not be the most quaint neighbourhood, but I appreciated to live in an area where "normal people" live too, and not in a hotel dead zone. There are several shops nearby and both the Judisches Museum and Haus am Checkpoint Charlie is a stone's throw away. It was cleaned well every day, and there is a sizable safe for valuables. The Wi-Fi worked fine. There is no air condition, which might be an issue super hot summer days, but I haven't got that at home either ;-) I certainly didn't have any issues with hearing neighbouring rooms that some people have commented on, nor did I find the noise from the street disturbing. In fact, I'm struggling to understand that that could have been so noisy, the hotel is located on a fairly small side street, not a throughfare.
Room was basic but clean, bathroom and shower were both very good, staff friendly. Location is decent, only short walk to nearest U-Bahn north and Kreuzberg to the south. We didn't have breakfast but there's a few cafes nearby. Not a 4 star by any means. It is very basic, almost like a better hostel but for the money we paid £45 per night you literally couldn't go wrong.
This Hotel has excellent location and it's clean. Also they have nice restaurant with good breakfast buffet. I think this would be good *** Hotel but not **** Hotel. It's too simple for **** stars Hotel. Room view was terrible ( we could see another wall, exit from restaurant kitchen and hear loud conversation). There is no mini bar in room and room is too small.
Easy to get to (Kochstrasse tube only 5 minutes away) and central for Berlin city visit. Only 40 minutes from airport to hotel room by Train and underground. We feel this is much more 3 than 4 star. Nevertheless the room was spacious, clean and ideal for a base. Efficient reception - breakfast pricey at 14 euros when a very substantial alternative can be purchased for much less not 100 metres away. Kreuzberg pleasant and the iconic Checkpoint Charlie is less than a 10 minute stroll. Recommended for the traveller not wanting more than a place to rest each evening.
I picked the Novum due to its location and couldn't have been happier. 2/3 minutes walking to Checkpoint Charlie, 2 different subway lines and only a couple of stops to where a lot of tours leave from. Also close to the Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin Wall Memorial. The hotel has everything you want - which is what the star rating is built on. Really helpful staff, a laundry service (expensive as all hotels are, but are you going to waste holiday time in a launderette!) The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily, they have adequate room facilities (albeit no bar fridge), 24hr reception, hotel bar and breakfast only restaurant. Its close to everything so chances are you'll only be showering and sleeping and out the rest of the time - For me it was great.
WARNING This is not a 4 star hotel. I have stayed in better 3 star hotels in third world countries! Never in my life have I stayed in a four star hotel that had- NO air conditioning (middle of summer and our room is as hot as a sauna) NO kettle/ tea and coffee facilities NO soap/ shampoo and conditioner (hotel has all in one body wash/ shampoo and conditioner) NO wifi even though we were told there if free wifi. Towels are thin, old and small and really should be thrown out. Pillows are flat and old. Wifi - this is meant to be free in all rooms. The wifi has no security what so ever, therefor not allowing any device to connect due to security concerns. Had to leave windows open all night as not to suffocate, only to be woken at 5 am by the kitchen staff taking at the top of the lungs, banging and crashing everything they could get their hands on. The staff also smoked out side open windows filling our room with cigarette smoke. Breakfast was included in our room price, it was okay but if I'd paid for breakfast as an add on I'd be very disappointed with the food offered. This hotel is 3 star or less don't be fooled by the 4 star rating. Beyond disappointed and highly recommend you stay elsewhere. On a positive note the hotel is in a good location and walking distance to restaurants.
Stayed two nights, great location, 2 minute walk from Checkpoint Charlie underground station. We did not eat in the hotel so can't comment on the food. Our room 243 was modern, large, clean and overlooked the main road. No disturbance from traffic or people. Staff helpful when we needed some info on return trains. From airport to hotel in 40 minutes with just one change, easy and not expensive. Highly recommend this hotel both for location and quality.
The room was pristine and has a unique modern feel. The bed was very comfortable and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Really close to the subway and it's situated just off Friedrichstrasse which connects you to lots of interesting places.
The hotel has a perfekt location close to public transport. The room was very small, but clean and equipted with the Things you need for a short stay. The bed was to hard for my taste. No breakfast included and no parking.
My wife and I stayed one week in January 2017 and both were very satisfied with the experience. The interior room was silent and very comfortable. Totally updated with new modern furniture and lighting features. The bathroom had also been renovated. The international staff was friendly and professional. For the services, comfort and quality we considered it was reasonably priced. We did not use the restaurant. There are plenty of options in the area for breakfast and dinner as well, particularly Maximilians offering authentic German food with a very lively atmosphere to Entrecote for an upscale continental dinner experience. The location of the hotel is very convenient; close to city center, shopping areas some museums and tourist attractions as well as subway system. We would go back to this hotel without hesitation.
