Novum Hotel Gates Berlin Charlottenburg3.0 out of 5.0

This is a refurbished hotel in Charlottenburg area of Berlin, a good area within 50 metres of U2 station, and short walk to Berlin Zool station. The room was clean but quite small...I booked a standard double bed on Booking.com but got a single bed upon arrival after some mixup with rooms being available...but all ok. Staff were helpful. There are vending machines for beer and snacks, wifi is free and good, and some nice cafes 30 metres away for good coffee and food.
I booked 3 nights at this hotel and arrived shortly after 12am - I had the worst night sleep of my life and I immediately moved hotels the next morning. This hotel is very similar to a hostel setting. The room I was allocated was smelly, dusty and was that small in size you couldn't swing a cat in it - The toilet/shower was also tiny, so if you are a "larger" or "tall" person you would struggle at this hotel. It is very claustrophobic. The type of room i was allocated is not shown anywhere where on their website. Their website displays nice, large rooms, but don't be fooled! - these are just the rooms that you see in the initial photo of the main hotel front building. Behind this initial lovely looking building is a court yard leading to a massive ugly 'hostel' type building containing hundreds of 'the other' room's which I was given. I am a seasoned traveller and by no means am I a snob - I am ex-military and have stayed in hotels and locations all over the world, but I do expect transparency from hotel websites regarding the true standard of their hotels facilities, which this hotel does not offer. My bed frame was broke and I had to tape up broken slats so I could sleep without the noise of the wood snapping when I sat on the bed or turned in it. I chose this hotel because of the pictures displaying larger rooms with lots of space. It was extremely noisy with guest coming and going all night and they have massive metal keys for the room doors which cause excessive noise from guest opening and closing their doors. If living in a 'hostel' type hotel is alright for you then book this hotel. If not and you expect the standard(s) that you see advertised on a hotel website then please choose a different hotel - what they advertise and what is offered are polar opposites. I expected what they advertsied and didn't get it, hence my disappointment and this negative review.
Perfect quiet location, nice reception friendly female receptionist. Car parking available at €16 a day! We weren't told on street parking was free on a Sunday so annoyed after found out could have saved on a days parking. The room was clean with huge windows and a large bathroom. The only thing that spoilt our visit was an extremely rude make receptionist, we gave our garage key back he was abrupt and when we mentioned the Sunday parking he told us we should have asked????? He didn't say please or thank you and had no eye contact, he is not a good first contact when you enter the hotel, and on a personal note had far too much wet look hair gel on! On the whole a good visit just spoilt slightly by the receptionist. Plenty of places to eat with a lot of variety.
Good hotel which is well placed near the local the station. Staff are friendly and efficient and the hotel is very clean and tidy. Rooms are well decorated and comfy. There was a free safe in the room and tea making facilities. There is only one small lift, although it wasnt busy, so didn't cause any issues. Personally I wouldn't bother with the breakfast, which costs £14. There are several bakeries and coffee shops within walking distance.
Excellent hotel for the price - clean, convenient location and most of the staff friendly and helpful. The one exception was the young lady who checked us in but she had clearly had a bad day. Ten minute stroll from the S and U Bahn stations at the Zoogarten and around 5 or 6 stops will take you into the centre of Berlin. The Schloss Charlottenburg is also only a walk away and would be delightful on a sunny day. The breakfast at the hotel was very comprehensive and set us all up for the day.
Quite ordinary room, ok for couple on tour. Close to Subway, bus and tram. Lots of Restaurants close by the hotel. Nice staff, polite! Old fashion key system, had to deliver the key every time we went out.
This hotel is a lodging facility. The cleaning is far below average and the carpet looks like decade old and the windows are probably not cleaned for decade. Location: This is close to the Zoo logical garden stattion and 15-20 mins walking. There is a U-Bahn and Bus stop approximately 200 meters from the hotel. Bed and Sleep: The bed was probably also quite old and makes noise when you move. Plus: The rooms were large in size and that was to my surprise Noisy: Even if there are people walking on the floor above you will hear the noise. Needs revamp.
The hotel itself is good. The rooms are spacious and clean, but a little bit antiquated. The location is very convenient, close to public transportation. I would've rated it better if the people working at the reception were nicer. I believe that being helpful, polite and agreeable are the most important qualities in a receptionist, especially if you're in the hotel industry and dealing with foreigners. And, unfortunately, most people working at this hotel's reception are lacking in these manners. One girl misread our reservation e-mail, thought wrongly that we should have checked-out and basically tried to kick us out of our room. Then, when I lost my backpack at a nearby restaurant I got very little help from the staff when I was trying to recover it. To put it shortly, it's a good hotel if you just need a place to sleep. But if you need help with navigating the city or dealing with some unforeseen situation, then don't count on them.
Child friendly hotel. Breakfast not included is a minus. Wifi never works for any guests. Excellent location, near subway. Carpets minus. No AC if you are planning to come in summertime. Kind, smiling receptionists.
Very good hotel in a good location. Rooms very clean and quiet. Good range of food at Breakfast. Plenty of cafes and restaurants on the same street as the hotel. Only a couple of minutes walk from u-bahn station.
