Athena Pension is like an oasis in the middle of the historic center of Bergama. Beautifully renovated historic rooms, well furnished, bathroom ensuite , a pretty garden, quiet setting yet close to historic sites and restaurants. The host is very friendly and helpful and serves a delicious Turkish breakfast. The hotel is less than 10 minutes walk from the bus station. I also walked from the hotel to the acropolis ( up the hill) , the red bascilla and the asklepion ruins
Athena Pension is in the old town near the ancient river bridge at the base of the acropolis. It is easy to find due to excellent signposting. There is secure courtyard parking so the bike had a safe night, but slow speed manoeuvring was tricky on the large old cobble stones. This is a renovated Ottoman building with a courtyard and walled garden. Rooms are clean and well furnished with ensuite facilities. Turkish village breakfast was served overlooking the garden. This is a peaceful place to stay within easy access of sites and restaurants. The host is so kind and helpful we felt like we instantly had a friend in Bergama.
This hotel is lovely, the rooms are clean and cozy, the garden is pretty, the breakfast is lovely — but the best thing about it is the owner/host. It felt like we had an instant friend in Bergama. On our first night there, a large group stayed in the hotel, and he organized a little impromptu party for all of us, with local musicians and grilled meats. Location is perfect: a quick walk to everything you want to see in Bergama, yet at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. We're definitely coming back here.
Climatic old - Ottoman Hostel put at the foot of the hill on which historical Pergamon Acropolis in the quiet, shaded small street. If you are lucky you will get a room with a view. Rooms about the various standard, to every pocket. Helpful and friendly service. Breakfasts included in costs.
Athena Pension is terrific in every way. The rooms are beautiful and spotless. The staff are some of the kindest people we have met in Turkey (and that is saying something). The breakfast was terrific, and was a perfect way to start a day. The owner has remodeled the building himself to its original Ottoman state, and he is happy to discuss it with you. Finally, the walled in garden is unbelievable with a billion dollar view of the Akropolis Ruins. It was content to sit out in the garden and look up at thousands of years of history. I have never found a better view or a better host in my travels.
Athena Pension was everything we hoped for and more. It is off the beaten path and rushing tourist groups. It is an ideal choice if you are looking for a peaceful and authentic couple of days. Aydin and Melek were amazing hosts with a lot of insight to the town and its culunary gems. The estate is beautiful with a stunning garden with great view of the acropolis . The rooms are adapted from traditional stone houses that are stunning. The rooms are very clean, well kept and has AC!. Plus there is internet and amazing breakfast full of delicious (vegetarian friendly) local yuminess. Highly, highly recommended. This place is a hidden gem if you are looking for a culturally and culinarily authentic couple of days.
Athena Pension in Bergama was tucked behind old buildings. We reached there quite late in the evening after a long drive from Bodrum. As we called ahead, the proprietor Mr Aydin ordered dinner for us. Lovely. The property is more than 200 years old. it was well maintained. a peach tree sat by the kitchen/dining area was full of ripe fruits. we have never tasted such juicy fresh peaches and peach juice. the proprietor prepared the breakfast buffet and we were spoiled by the taste and quality. the furniture in the rooms were a bit old but we didn't care. the rooms were clean and comfortable. awesome experience!
My wife and I have visited Bergama twice in the last two years and on both occasions we stayed at Athena Pension. Aydin is a gracious and generous host, his Pension is a beautifully and genuinely restored Ottoman Hotel. The images posted tell the truth, the gardens are green and relaxed, an oasis in the middle of the Old Town. The rooms have been tastefully restored and are very comfortable, breakfast is the genuine Turkish spread, a table full with fresh organic goodies. We absolutely recommend a stay when visiting Bergama. Sibel and John
This is definitely the best place we have ever stayed. The rooms were very comfortable and well thought out (like a light switch which you can switch from your bed!), and the whole place was very clean. I especially loved the courtyard and the extra breakfast/hang out room with books, places to sit, and a wood fire. The host and the women who works for him are both extremely friendly and we had a great time getting to know them. Needless to say we absolutely loved our stay and would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat! It's the sort of place you feel right at home from day one.
The Athena Pension really felt like an oasis, tucked away on a quiet side street in Bergama. And it definitely wins the award for best breakfast in Turkey during our recent trip. Aydin is a friendly and generous host, and Melik makes wonderful cakes and savoury pastries, and ensures that guests are happy. Our room was clean and bright, with lots of windows. And there were lots of hooks to hang clothes on and places to put our books and other accoutrements. The bathroom was small but clean and had everything we needed. However, the garden and the breakfasts were the highlights for us. The breakfasts really have to be seen to be believed: they are enormous and when we were there included a wonderful homemade cake with walnuts and sesame seeds and homemade savoury pastries known as poğaça, in addition to cheese, bread, olives, helva (!), yogurt with carrots (delicious) and many other goodies. The garden, with its shade and views of the acropolis, was the perfect place to relax at the end of the day and, if you were lucky (as we were), perhaps be offered some tea and biscuits. A group of Korean tourists was staying at the pension when we were there, and the garden was also a great place for meeting other guests and hearing about their travels. We were short of time at the end of our trip and feel that we weren't able to take in all that Bergama had to offer. When we return, we will definitely choose to stay at Athena Pension again.
