Grand Excelsior at Amalfi : Why do I rate this Hotel as a Medium Hotel? Room #509 was very good as far as the area is concerned, and with a fantastic balcony=Superb view over the Ocean. The bathroom with the tap's handle for the washing basin broken. The minibar was poorly served and obviously neglected by maintenance of the Hotel, as just 3 items could be find for appetizers. The small card bag for peanuts had been opened by some previous occupant and had not been substituted...! Sound proffing walls between rooms is also nonexistant ! We could here the sounds made by the couple at the east room adjacent to ours... Breakfast is served either inside or on the vast exterior balcony (one of the 7 levels of balconys over the Amalfian Coast). Very good variety and quality of products both cold and hot stuff. Below the level where breakfast is served, the external swiming pool and lounge is terryfic and again offers the spectacular views of the Amalfi coast and steeo slope over the Ocean. But I recomend a solution to warm the water, as the shadows envelopp the area just after 3 h PM. The carpets covering the floors of the room corridors are crying to be renewed, such as a serious intervention on the subject of elevators, as the existing one is ridiculously small and long overdued. Receptionists were fantastic !... Very kind , helpfull and attentive . The shuttle bus to and from the Amalfi central square is a must and functions perfectly and regularly. But the views...Unforgetable!
Yes, this hotel is tired and in need of a face lift but it is also full of charm and character. The location is a bit out of town but there is a free shuttle bus service available. Our room was very spacious with a large balcony that overlooked the sea :) Most of the staff were friendly and polite. Breakfast was okay but it did take a while for coffee/ tea to be offered on occasions.
We have just returned home from another great two weeks at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Amalfi. Lorenzo and his wonderful staff never disappoint! From the welcoming smiles and hugs upon arrival, to the friendly interactions over the two weeks, to the hugs at goodbye time, we always feel most welcome at our “ second home “! We also never tire of the magnificent views and quietude the Excelsior has to offer. It is also wonderful to renew good times with our UK friends, meet new friends, and this trip, spend happy times with friends from home! As always, the charm of the Excelsior, our comfortable room, and the fine Italian cuisine make us return each year. We hope to make it 10 years in 2020! We also can’t forget the fine food, drinks, conversations and laughs in Pogerola at Maria’s and Benito’s Cocktail Bar! Who could ask for more! We are not going to start mentioning staff names because they are all special to us, but there are some who are extra special - you know who you are! Until next year, God willing, we can enjoy our memories until we make new ones! Ciao! Willa and Barry 💕🇮🇹🇨🇦
We spent one week at this hotel and everything was so perfect. The room was very specious. Furnitures a little retro but if you compare the price with the other hotels that has a pool, shuttle service, free breakfast you need to pay double and more. Francesco each morning always welcome us with the best smile and he speaks more than 4 languages. Alessandro was very busy also. He smiled and made sure that everything was running smoothly. Our room was on the main level so no elevator for us. The balcony is spacious and the views are breathtaking. I agree with some comments about the halls and the carpets being a little old but it doesn’t smell and my balcony view is what’s really counts when you vacationing. I don’t spend my time in the halls but on my balcony. I just regret not staying longer. This hotel is so well situated to explore the Amalfi coast from Salerno to Sorrento. There are ferries that starts in Amalfi for you to visit : Capri, Salerno, Positano, Sorrento and many more. You also from Amalfi can take buses to Ravello, Agerola ... The hotel gives you all the info and helps you organize your day trips. I will return to the Excelsior. Too much to see in only one week.
We have been to this hotel on numerous occassions and the thrill of returning has never worn off. Our stay started with a warm welcome at reception and we were shown our spacious room with sea view and well appointed bathroom with a full length bath.. There was always loads of hot water and frequently changed comfy towels. The bed was very comfortable, firm with extra blankets and pillow. Air conditioning helped to keep the bedroom coooler on the hot evenings. The room was cleaned meticulously every day. The breakfast included was comprehensive. A choice of cereals with milk and yogurt, fruit juices and cooled water, fresh fruit and fruit salad. Sausages, eggs, bacon, spinach, cheeses,Italian meats. In addition there is a sweet choice with bread rolls, preserves, delicious croissants filled with Nutella or creme anglaise, doughnuts. Waiters are very helpful in guiding you to where everything is and serving you a choice of coffee and other hot beverages. My partner has a food intolerance and all the restaurant staff were most helpful. We found the breakfast a very relaxed way to start your day and it begins at 7.00 in time for guests to prepare for the departure of the first shuttle bus at 7.45. All the drivers are excellent which is a god send on the local roads which although picturesque are busy. Also the local Sita bus stops outside the hotel and the trip into Amalfi is E1.30. Already looking forward to going back next year with Tui
The views are exceptional in this hotel that sits on a cliff, the rooms are large, the staff is awesome but....we had to take 3 elevators to get to our room and the water in the bathroom sink and shower spit and sputtered and was tepid. It was very helpful to have the staff arrange for our evening meals out and the restaurant would send a car to pick us up!
My wife and I loved this hotel, the views were incredible and the staff were great. Yes the hotel is old and needs some renovations in the rooms but that is Italy for you a lot of the places you go are old and full of character. The bed was a little hard but after a busy day out in the town my wife and I fell asleep no problem. The breakfast included was nice and simple and a good way to start the day. The shuttle was very convenient going into town. The private beach was wonderful to have because it was peaceful and no one bothered you, I recommend bringing water shoes as all the beaches in Amalfi are rocky. All in all this was a great little hotel and I would definitely stay here again.
some reviews complain about hotel being dated etc , but i found it to be full of character and spotlesly clean. If you prefer a pristine white concrete box, it may not be the one for you ! The staff were all friendly and attentive, we had no problems or issues. The breakfast is a standard continental style buffet selection, which tou can eat inside or out on the terrace. The location is stunning, on the cliffs overlooking amalfi.there is a hotel courtesy bus running every hour to and from amalfi , and a local bus on the half hour , it takes about 10 to 15 mins to get to the centre. There are a few local resturants and bar about 10 mins walk up the hill.
This hotel is grand and its old and it hangs on a cliff with unsurpassed views! We loved this place!! Coffee on the patio and wine at night watching the sunrise over the sea and set with the twinkling lights of the town all at your feet! The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the rooms and some hallway carpets need updating. Our room and bathroom was spacious and accommodating but lacked in luxury and convenience. The bed was hard, no pillow top or down coverlets here and the pillows were very flat. Also it would have been nice to have a couch or comfy chair instead of an additional single bed. We also fought the lock on every return to our room (actual key with a very heavy keychain perhaps purposed by the hotel to make you have them keep your keys at the front desk until you return?) But in all we loved this grand old hotel and we will take a piece of it with us in our hearts with the great memories!
Very disappointing stay. My room was super old, poorly decorated and WiFi was not working properly. Very old carpet on the hallway as well. My friend, who is allergic, got seriously sick due to the strong mold. Only positive topics where the nice room view and well trained staff. Would NOT recommend this hotel.
