I paid for upgraded room, they gave me the basic. When I asked the manager, she stated " hotel.com in their email, authorized a basic room and paid us accordingly." So you need to speak to hotel.com I was not happy:(

The Plaza Hotel is a decent place to stay in Almaty. The rooms are clean, well equipped and comfortable. The breakfast is good but not amazing but as it’s a buffet I’m sure there’s plenty there to satisfy everyone. It’s not the most central hotel but the area around is safe and the river makes orientating yourself in the city quite easy. Get Yandex Go the ex-Soviet equivalent of Uber and getting around costs next to nothing and is very quick and efficient. Would I stay here again? Absolutely! It’s a very good hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at Plaza Hotel. Staffs at the reception were very helpful and cheerful. We are very impressed by the work of the housekeeping team. They did a very good job in keeping our junior suite clean and tidy. The location is slightly off the main attraction but it has the most beautiful view of the mountains and the perfect sunrise. We highly recommend visitors to stay at Plaza Hotel. Thank you for having us in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

This was one of the best hotel stays of my 2019, which includes a couple dozen places. I cannot comment on other hotels in Almaty, but you really cannot go wrong with this hotel. The breakfast, the rooms, and the members of the staff are all delightful.
