Excellent hotel in an old fort

From a historical aspect this is a particularly interesting hotel as it has been converted from old fort that was once used by the Duke of Wellington and his army. The staff are friendly and helpful staff plus the breakfast is excellent. This is a great place to stay if you are ever in the area.

A little peice of Napoleonic history

We stayed here to participate in a historical reenactment taking place just over the border in Almeida Portugal as well as to experience staying in a genuine 18th century Fort. The room was comfortable and clean but the was a lack of storage space for the equipment and clothing we had with us. Excellent bathroom but the room was a bit basic, considering this is listed as a luxury hotel. Breakfast buffet superb. Dinner a bit disappointing. One major drawback was that the hotel was completely closed during the day so we I was not well and we did not go out there was nothing available to eat or drink until 4pm. However when I was taken very ill on Sunday the hotel receptionist was very helpful and contacted a local medical centre, told them we were on our way and provided a translation service over the phone when we were there. I was then taken by ambulance to the hospital in Salamanca where I was admitted early Monday morning for for a stay of over a week. The hotel also let us leave our luggage in the room until Tuesday with no extra charge as my husband had to drive back 150kms from the hospital in Salamanca to collect it and settle the payment on his own.

Incredibly unique experience !

If you love history and nature then this is the place for you . The rooms are filled with character, with comfortable beds. The food is outstanding. Breakfast is a must it's extremely good quality produce. The staff are amazing and extremely professional . The wildlife is incredible!! Three owlets nesting in the ramparts, a swallows nest above our door and eagles flying overhead. You will not get a good signal here but this only adds the the peace and serenity this hotel provides. This was our second visit and we hope to return soon.

Above an beyond

They really went above and beyond... We arrived at 10:40 PM, so the restaurant was closed. We asked if it would be possible to get some kind of snacks...nothing fancy. The young lady in charge of the kitchen arranged a beautiful spread of cheeses and Jamon Serrano. Also got us two bottles of wine and 6 Mahou (cervezas). The breakfast buffet the next morning was even more incredible. The hotel is remarkably unique and comfortable. We will definitely be back the next time we are visiting Spain/Portugal.

Simply wow!

Wow! If you like a bit of history then this place is for you. Only fort like it in Europe that’s a hotel. Very atmospheric, great food and staff. I left very early morning but they had prepared me a nice breakfast to take with me. Fantastic place for sunsets as well!

Weekend totally ruined.

Worst hotel we have ever stayed. Room not as advertised, no air conditioning working, no hot water available.Room was damp and very musty. No management on site all weekend to resolve issues which were many .Did not get to bed before 3am because of problems. New room given for second night which was OK. Whole block of rooms had problems. Newer rooms OK other rooms stay away. Breakfast Ok, facilities limited, very nice location. Pity about the appalling management. The few staff on site were very pleasant.

A pleasant and unique experience

A most unusual hotel in a remote location. From the time of our arrival to our departure our experience was a joy. The hotel must be almost unique in that it has been created from a long derelict fort. However it has been sympathetically converted and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The restaurant was good with excellent friendly service from Joanne. Nearby is the walled town of Ciudad Rodrigo on the Spanish side and Almeida on the Portuguese side both worth visiting. Whilst the Parador in CR looks very pleasant it has a noisy road nearby and does not match the character of the Fort. If in the area definitely worth the visit.

Amazing accommodation in reconstructed Fort!

Fantastic conversion of an 18/19th century fort, partially destroyed by the Duke of Wellington in The Peninsular War. The bedrooms are superb and located in the old barracks as is the restaurant, breakfast room and bar. If you are looking for something different this is as quirky as it gets. Surrounding countryside only fair, although The Douro is not too far away. Make a detour, you won't regret it. Now the hotel itself, large well equipped rooms, superb dinner and extensive breakfast. Great staff, but its the Fort that's the star!!

Fortress hotel

An outstading nice hotel. Right on the border with Spain and Portugal. An old fortress well maintained and turned into a hotel. Perfect experience overall! And yes - the breakfast is really good.

Almost perfect, but....

It could have been amazing. Went out of my way to stay here and one thing made it less than great. The air-conditioning in my room was broken. This is a problem when it is warm and you are effectively sleeping in a concrete tunnel with 2 rifle holes for windows and no breeze. I chased the staff 3 times for a solution and all I was told was sorry. However the restaurant food is brilliant and would fit into any capital city in the world. When looking for the hotel, remember it is a converted Fort and so is on top of the hill out of town.

Napolionic Stay

Absolutely fantastic! Very welcoming staff, surroundings exceptional - you can easily imagine it as a fort in bygone days. Rooms, clean, bright, long and very spacious, beginning with relaxing area, followed by bathroom then bedroom. The king size bed was extremely comfortable. Hot and cold breakfast catered for all tastes. A little out of the way so need a car to explore further afield. Would definitely return and recommend to friends and relatives!

5-star experience in a real fort

This hotel is in a restored star fort in a quiet setting not far from the Portugese border. The rooms are 5-star (it must be the longest room we've ever stayed in) as is the setting. Despite its relatively small size, we spent a few hours poking around the various corners and exploring its history. Its worth reading about star forts in this area to get the most out of it. Staff were obliging and breakfasts generous. There are other forts and towns nearby and the scenery is different from what we had previously experienced.
