Parador De Argomaniz

4.0 out of 5.0

Parador de Argomaniz is just off the main road north and south convenient for France. The hotel itself is very nice with very comfortable rooms and the staff are friendly and efficient. The major letdown is the restaurant which offers poor value for the quality of the food it produces. The Basque Country is famous for its cuisine but you would not think so if this is typical. If you can, find a good restaurant in Vitoria!

We stayed here for one night on our way from Madrid to San Sebastián and were very happy we did. Very easy to find. Excellent free parking. A warm welcome and speedy check in from reception. The building is lovely with a modern, very stylish and comfortable interior. We had booked with our Amigos points but decided to pay the 12 euros to upgrade to a superior room with a view. It was worth it. The view was lovely, the room was spacious as was the bathroom (note to housekeeping and reason this review was not 5 stars is that the floor needed mopping as it was dusty with some hairs). Otherwise it was clean and very comfortable. The previous reviewer stated that there were no English speaking channels, there are, you just have to change the language (idioma) using the remote. We had excellent G&Ts in the bar (note the gadget on the tables to call a waitress who came immediately). We then dined in the beautiful 4th floor restaurant. We enjoyed all of our three courses and a good bottle of wine. The oxtail (rabo de toro) main was really delicious. As stated by previous reviewers, the service could have been a little more friendly but it was, nevertheless, very efficient. We regarded the meal as excellent value for money. A reviewer has said they found it “lifeless” but, as with many paradores we have visited, you may not find them “buzzing” but we have come to enjoy the serene, comfortable, traditional and consistent style of these hotels although they vary from ultra modern interiors in beautiful old buildings to real old style Spain. We would definitely stay in this Parador again.

The parador is located in the countryside which means no restaurants around. It´s a quiet area with a nice view if you choose a room located in front. We chose a room on the backside with a small sittingarea but no view. Large room and bathroom. TV with no Englishspeaking channels. Good readinglight by the bed. Refrigerator in the room. WiFi worked perfectly. Nice breakfast. Close to the Bilbao Airport. Takes about one hours drive to get there on the toll freeway 5 euros.

When we first stayed at a Parador we found it to be lacking in character and decided that we would not repeat the experience though my wife remembered how enjoyable we found the breakfast. When I received an email advertising a Gastro Package at a Parador near to Bilbao we thought that we would accept the offer and booked for two nights. Now there was nothing to criticise about our room which was comfortable, though we would have appreciated tea making facilities, the staff, who were pleasant and the breakfasts were as good as we remembered. The Gastro Package was, however, a disappointment, served with polite indifference and the food lacked the quality that one would expect from a chain promoting 'fine dining'.I suspect that this might have been because it was the end of the season or perhaps Head Office accountants are flexing their muscles to the detriment of what the chef would have preferred to have been able to offer.

A perfect location to explore Vitoria, Laguardia and Logrono and for return to ferry at Santander via Bilbao. We enjoyed the usual impeccable Parador experience except for one heavily over-salted dish at dinner.

Convenient for breaking the journey from Marbella. Clean everywhere, friendly staff, great restaurant both for dinner and breakfast and very nice bar area. Comfortable bed. Very reasonably priced. Ample parking.

Good, clean, comfortable and extremely good front of house. Very helpful in advising us on how to reach our next Parador by giving us road maps etc. Restaurant good with a good choice of menu and attentive service. Would certainly stay again on our way through Spain

a perfect place on our way to Marbella. Good food in the restaurant and a perfect breakfast. Room was agreeable. There was a fine parking place for our car in a secure environment. Good as a stopover on your trip.

Two night stay, Pleasant place with lovely views. Good breakfast. The bar menu is not available until 8pm and then was very average. Did not try the restaurant which is listed on TA under both the Parador and Restaurant Aletegi. You might like to eat nearby. Avoid room 302 unless you like a view of a concrete wall and recycling bins.

We felt that this Parador was below the standard we are used to experiencing. There were not enough staff on reception, we had to wait 20 minutes to check in, the same applied to the restaurant, not enough staff and the food was not up to the standard we are used to in other Paradors, and yet the cost of food seemed to be higher. The hotel is isolated and therefore there is no nearby competition for the restaurant. The breakfast had a limited selection of food, again not what we are used to having at other Paradors
